This year, the State of Michigan
has mandated a new program for
Michigan Schools. This program is
called EDP. EDP stands for Educational
Development Plans. Every
student will have one by the end of
the year, starting at the 7th grade
level. Students may change their
career choice at any time.
What do EDP’s do? EDP’s are
designed to help students with career
planning and career goals.
This program will have a big effect
on students, especially on the class
schedules they choose from now
on. These changes will be noticed
around the state because there was
also a raise in the number of credits
in each subject that a student will
need to graduate high school. In
schools like Manistee it will even
be more prevalent with the trimester
schedule that our system has.
Not only will students have to
choose classes that meet their required
credit hours, they will also
have to choose classes that point
them towards further developing
skills and knowledge within the
career program of their choice.
The adjustment will be a fairly
smooth one, however. MAPS have
recently purchased a program
called Career Cruising. This is a
Web-based program designed for
students to research different possibilities
for career paths. The high
school counseling office now has 2
computers installed with the program
for student use by appointment.
Students can try this program
at any time by making an
appointment with Mr. Howes or
Ms. Kiss, and they can help if anyone
has questions about the program.
This program is designed to help
students excel in the career of their
choice. This will also better prepare
the students for a better college
education. MHS principal
Andy Huber agrees and says, “This
isn’t simply an issue for collegebound
students. There will more
and more educational requirements
for all occupations, and the better
prepared students are the better
chance they have at getting a good
job.” Huber continued that, “Times
are changing. Twenty-five years
ago you could get a career job at a
factory, for example, with little
educational requirements to perform
the tasks. Now, and more in
the future, prospective employees
will be required to demonstrate a
mastery of skills before they are
considered. Even right now, many
job seekers are asked to take a test
such as ACT Work Keys as part of
the screening process. The bottom
line is that as workers are asked to
integrate communication and technology
skills in their job, their educational
preparation are being
looked at more than ever.”
By introducing students to opportunities
at the 7th grade level and
up, they will be able to plan out a
more successful plan for their education
to best support their career
aspirations.
Pictured above is the Home
Screen of the
Career Cruising Program.
This year at MHS, teachers have
been giving M Cards to students
who have been recognized for going
out of their way to do a good
deed. Every month there is a luncheon
honor the M Card receivers
with Pizza Hut pizza. They will
also have their picture taken by the
Manistee News Advocate.
This month’s luncheon was held
on Monday January 14. Numerous
students have been noticed going
above and beyond this month. The
students who received an M Card
are Brandon Arradaza, Kyle Bassett,
Avery Bell, Heather Bezhian,
Julian Dorris, Max Dougherty,
Bryan Drak, Tom Dionne,
Joe Frederick, Tyler Guenthardt,
Shawn Hansen, Kevin Kott, Jed
Langham, Courtney Look, Chelsea
Look, Joel Moorehouse, Greg
Olsen, Allison Owens, Kari
Paine, Josh Paprocki, Theresa
Pepera, Jon Peterson, Andrew
Picardat, Will Postma, Marley
Sartor, Maria Solberg, Paul Swedenborg,
Andrew Tighe, Will
Wahr, Pat Wilson, Stuart Wilson,
and Paige Zajac. These students
were invited to the complementary
pizza lunch and group photo.
The M Card promotes good behavior
in school and encourages
students to perform actions not
normally seen of high school students.
It also shows that good deeds
do not go unnoticed or unrewarded.
When asked what they wanted to
accomplish, Karen Schneider said
“It started as a grant program, but
teachers came up with the M Card
to show recognition for students
caught doing something good.”
Keeping New Year’s
Resolutions
By: Marley Sartor
Odds are that by now everyone
has decided on a New Year’s
Resolution. But two weeks into
2008, you may already be beginning
to find it difficult to
keep with them. Here are some
tips to make it easier to stick
your resolutions!
1. Be realistic: If you set an
unobtainable goal, then you are
sure to fail. Be sure to make
your resolution challenging but
realistic.
2. Make a plan: This way you
will have steps planned out to
help you keep focused and
reach your goal.
3. Find Support: Tell your
friends and family about your
resolution, that way they’ll be
able to help you out when they
know you’re having a hard time
sticking to your goal.
4. Accept that Mistakes Happen:
If you get caught up on a
small mistake you can lose
sight of your long-term goal, so
let go of your small slip-ups
and focus on end result you are
shooting for.
5. Reward Yourself: After you
have an exceptionally good
week or reach one of your small
goals, reward yourself! These
small rewards will help you
keep going.
Senioritis: A High
School Disease
By: Alyssa Jones
Senioritis is a colloquial term used in
the United States and Canada to describe
the decreased motivation toward studies
displayed by students who are nearing the
end of their high school careers.
Many students begin to experience a
lack of motivation, procrastination, lessened
study periods, numerous absences
from school, and even feeling very tired.
Walk down the halls of Manistee High
School and notice the appearance of
many seniors. Baggy sweatpants and
sweatshirts are the everyday apparel,
along with sneakers and hair in a ponytail
look for girls. Along with appearance
comes the attitude.
Most students who are plagued with
“senioritis” could really care less about
anything dealing with academics. Their
grades begin to slump and students begin
to have different relationships with their
teachers.
Are there any consequences to senioritis?
Some students, if hit seriously by the
“disease”, might not be accepted by the
college of their choice or may even be
turned down even after being accepted
due to their grades. Students do not realize
that failing to keep up their grades
and their focus on school could deter
their future.
So is there a cure, and if so, what is it?
Senioritis is known to be cured only by
the walk down the aisle during graduation
and receiving the diploma. Seniors,
we only have less than five months left,
so stick with it, keep your grades up, and
go to school!
Primary Elections Update
By: Myles Amor
Grading
Flaws
By: Kyle Bassett
For most teachers 80 to 83
percent is a B-, 84 to 86 is a B,
and 87 to 89 is a B+. This is
the same for A’s, C’s, and so
on. I think there is a small
problem with this.
With the current grading
system the range of a B- is
four percent, while the range
for B’s and B+ is three percent.
It seems like the system
was designed to keep students
from reaching their full potential.
The difference between a
B and a B-, or an A and an A-
doesn’t make that much of a
difference for most students.
But for those who strive to
obtain the highest GPA they
can, it can make all the difference.
For an A, four points are
added to the GPA, but an A-
only adds 3.6 points.
The middle range should
take the majority of the grades.
This change would give students
who are on the border of
the minus range a small GPA
boost, a very small boost, but
every point counts in the end.
For example, a student who
has a GPA of 3.8 would experience
an average drop if
they got a 93 percent in a
class. If the change was in
effect, that same student
would see a rise in GPA.
This November, as we all know
(or should know), George W.
Bush’s Presidential term is up and
the position is up for grabs. Although
the 2008 year has just
started there have already been two
primary elections. Iowa and New
Hampshire have each had their
elections and each have had different
results. Wisconsin had their
delegate selection but no Democrats
participated and Romney was
the only Republican to campaign in
Wisconsin. With Clinton winning
the most recent primary in New
Hampshire and Obama winning
Iowa’s election it seems it may go
3
neck and neck on the Democratic
side. For the Republicans there has
also been a different winner every
time starting with Huckabee winning
in Iowa, Romney taking it in
Wyoming (being the only candidate
to campaign there), and McCain
winning the latest in New Hampshire.

Chips Soar Past Cadillac as Savela Leads with 25 Points
By: Theresa Pepera
If there was any doubt that the
chips would come back from break
on a slow start, it was quickly put
to rest Tuesday night as the Chips
beat Cadillac 55-42.
The Chippewas (6-3) had excellent
teamwork on Tuesday, with
Sophomore Rose Savela stepping
up to lead the team with 25 points
for the night. Savela also had three
assists and two blocks for
the night.
The Vikings played a great
game, but that couldn’t stop
the lady Chips from excelling
anyway. Junior
McKenzie Majchrzak and
Ashley Tiefenthal both
played a great game Tuesday
night as well. Majchrzak
ended the night with ten
points and Tiefenthal added
nine points to the score
board and 10 rebounds to the stat
book. “It felt great to get that team
win,” said Savela. “We haven’t
beat Cadillac in 2 years!”
Other players chipping in points
for the night included Sarah Solberg
who had five points, and Kristen
Merkey, Julia Maksym, and
Annaliese Kiss all added two points
to the score.
Taken Out of the Game
By: Logan Rohdy
Although the Chips started out a
little slow in the 1 st quarter, they
picked up the speed by the second
quarter and got their score up to the
double digits. However, Cadillac
didn’t give up and the half time
score was Manistee 29, Cadillac 28.
The third quarter was a little
faster for the Chips, as they outscored
the lady Vikings 12-10.
They wrapped it all up in the
4 th and kept held Cadillac to
only four points.
It was a good win for the
Chips because they have lost
the last two games at the
home court. However, the
girls gained some momentum
and they’re ready to go.
The Lady Chips take the
court again in White Cloud
this Friday!
girls!!
Good luck
Senior year. It’s the year that everyone
looks forward to whether
they’re in sports or not. However,
us "jocks," so to speak, really look
forward to this year. Between playing
in front of your entire town,
trying to earn awards and, on top of
it all, trying to get college exposure,
it’s a pretty big deal. Some of
us senior athletes aren’t so lucky.
Whether it is in the pre-season,
midway through or just before
playoffs, someone always seems to
g e t i n j u r e d .
Here’s my case. It’s halfway
through the season, I’ve already
scored my number of goals from
last year, our team has taken a tournament
championship as well as a
second place win, and we’re in our
third tournament of the season. It’s
the third period and I’m taken out
due to a knee injury. Disappointing
as that is, I then must sit and watch
my team, which is already short on
players, go through six overtimes to
finally win the game. I couldn’t
have been more proud of those
guys, but the worst part of all of it
is knowing I couldn’t go out there
and help them, no matter how bad I
w a n t e d t o .
I’m not here to complain or to ask
anyone to feel sorry. I want everyone
who doesn’t play sports, and
even those who do, to know how
devastating an injury is at a time
like this. I know that most high
school athletes are determined to
play at the college level, and if
there’s ever a year to do it, it’s senior
year. What I want people to get
out of this is that you should always
work hard in practice and even
harder in games. That’s how you
get noticed, and if you wait until
your senior year to do it, you take
that risk of injury that may ruin
y o u r c h a n c e s .
Now, there’s always a chance the
injury isn’t too serious and you’ll
be right back out there playing.
With an optimistic attitude and
following the doctor’s orders exactly,
an injury will heal much
faster. I may or may not make it
back for part of the season. However,
no matter what happens I’m
thankful for the people in this
school system that want to do what
they can to help get noticed. For
anyone else out there suffering an
injury, stay positive and keep your
hopes up. You never know what
can happen.
Hockey Team Loses Fourth Straight
By: Logan Rohdy
The Chippewa hockey team
faced off against West Ottawa this
weekend and suffered a 2-1 loss
after a really close game. Manistee
has not met the West Ottawa
squad since they were a JV team.
However, even then the two teams
had a bit of a rivalry. This was
obvious in the low-scoring game
as it was full of physical play from
b o t h s i d e s .
Both teams had trouble getting
on the board, but sophomore Joey
Tomczyk (Ludington) started the
scoring for Manistee on a rebound
from a shot by Dan Peterson. The
Chippewas could not hold their
lead for long as the hard-hitting
West Ottawa team caused them to
take a penalty, resulting in a
powerplay goal to tie it up at one.
The second period was scoreless
for both teams as they both fought
hard to get ahead in the game. All
that came was more penalties for
both sides. Despite some penalties
that could have gone either way,
the game remained tied at one.
The third period was not one in
the favor of the Chippewas as
West Ottawa got inside their
heads, causing them to take more
penalties that would set them
back. The Ottawa team scored
another powerplay goal that ended
the scoring for the rest of the
game. Manistee made an attempt
to pull their goalie and get an extra
skater on the ice, but that was
quite brief as they were called for
y e t a n o t h e r p e n a l t y .
The Chippewas will host Grand
Haven at home this Friday, January
18 th , at 7:00. Manistee’s last
meeting with Grand Haven in the
beginning of the season was a
rough one and should be a good
match up and this point. Manistee
will also be playing Saturday in
Traverse City for their second
meeting with the Bay Area Reps
as the Chippewas try to redeem
themselves for their previous loss
against the Reps.
Wrestlers Fall Short in Shelby Quad
By: Myles Amor
Manistee wrestlers had their
work cut out for them on Wednesday
night when they played some
great teams including Hesperia,
the top ranked team in the state
and last years runner-up at state
finals. Besides top-dog Hesperia
they had to deal with Holton,
Shelby, and Hart, all of which
have a pretty good reputation for
their wrestling programs.
Only three individual wrestlers
recorded wins for Manistee on
Wednesday. Alex Killips in the
103 pound division recorded his
first Varsity wrestling win. The
only other recorded winners for
the Chips were Travis Bulerski in
the 160 pound and Adam
Hundley in the heavyweight division.
Killips, Bulerski, and
Hundley all went 1-1 on the night.
Travic McKenney, David
Wahr, Rodney Mori, Alona
Wiltshire each went 0-1 in their
individual weigh class. Raul Torres,
Chuck Barron and Jed
Langham all went 0-1 in the
heavyweight division.
Also for Manistee, Max Dougherty,
Caleb Bailey, Nathan
Morrill, Tim McDougall, Tyler
Kniss, Jon Peterson, Joerdon
Daldos, Trevor Schwandt, and
Alex Waterman all went down 0-
2 for the night. Codie Pulcik went
0-2 in exhibition matches.
Why Are Attendance
Records So Low?
By: Logan Rohdy
Anyone who follows Red Wing
hockey has probably heard by now
about the low attendance records at Joe
Louis Arena, but the question is why?
Since the records have been down, Detroit
has been somewhat referred to as
the Dead Wings again, even though
they’re one of the top teams in the entire
NHL. In addition, Saint Paul, Minnesota
is being deemed the new Hockeytown.
Hockey was once a big part of that city,
what’s happening?
As a strong fan of the Red Wings, I
follow most of the games where one can
easily see the empty seats. According to
NHL commentators, there are thousands
of seats without people to fill them. I
can still recall going to Red Wings
games when I was younger, and I remember
seats being packed everywhere.
My friends and I would scope the entire
arena looking for empty seats closer to
the ice, and rarely did we get some.
Even if we did, the people came back
and kicked us out. This drastic decrease
in attendance has been in just the last
few years< which is rather quick if you
ask me< especially since the team is
doing quite well.
I think a minor reason is the new
hockey rules. You always hear commentators
such as Mickey Redman, an ex-
Red Wing, talk about how the refs need
to let the players play just like the old
days. Don’t get me wrong, I still love
the sport, but I can see where it would
lose fans if a penalty is called for a mere
slash, or a tiny hook. It’s just not as
physical as it used to be.
The number one reason is Michigan’s
economy. As bad as Michigan has gotten,
its population is going down. Not to
say that Red Wings are losing fans, but
Michigan is losing people. With everyone
moving out of the state, there’s
obviously going to be less fans at the
games. No one is going to come back to
Michigan just to go to a bunch of
games. Hopefully someday this state
will rise back up, along with the Joe’s
attendance.
What happened to the good
old days where the nation was
entertained by a talking dog and
group of kids that solved mysteries,
or a clever rabbit fooling
a dim-witted hunter? Yes, those
were television shows that
really caught peoples’ attention.
However, now days, television
is full of reality shows that are
far from reality.
The general topic of these
shows is ridiculous. They take a
bunch of strangers with personalities
that are sure not to mix
well, stick them in a huge mansion,
and watch them go at it.
Every show is the same, but
with the same type of people.
There’s always the huge buffed
up guys on steroids, the slutty
girl(s), the player, a few emotional
people, and then maybe
an occasional person with their
head on straight. These shows
are nothing but a reflection of
high school drama. These people
don’t have enough going on
in their own lives so they intervene
in everyone else’s problems.
These shows always seem to
be has-beens. For instance, look
at Flavor of Love with Flava
Flav. On second thought, he
was never cool in the first
place. Then there’s Rock of
Love with Brett Michaels from
Poison. Now, Poison was a
good band, but nonetheless he’s
not big anymore, so he has to
have a show with a few crazed
girls competing for him. Now
there’s A Shot at Love with Tila
Tequila. This is nothing but a
bi-sexual version of The Bachelorette.
Or, you know, there’s always
the shows that follow celebrities
lives completely. To be
honest, some of these peoples’
Opinion : Reality Check
By: Logan Rohdy
lives aren’t that glorious. They,
too, are has-beens. Off the top
of my head, two would be Newlyweds,
following Jessica Simpson
and Nick Lachey, and Hogan
Knows Best, following the
life of Hulk Hogan and his family.
Yeah, Jessica Simpson is
hot, but that’s about the only
reason to watch Newlyweds,
because Nick Lachey and 98
Degrees were always lame. As
for Hulk Hogan, I don’t know
the guy personally, but his
show isn’t too entertaining.
Once again, there are always
enough things to go out and do
rather than watch these celebrities
live their rich lives.
The most pathetic would have
to be those one-date shows like
Next and Date My Mom. The
people on these shows are nothing
but shallow. Though the
concept is completely ridiculous
anyways, having people go
on one short date and they’re
supposed to be in love, these
people judge the contestants on
nothing but looks. In Next, as
soon as an overweight girl
walks off the bus, she’s walking
back on just as quick. Then,
in Date My Mom, are you really
going to pick a girl based on
their mothers? Once again, the
hottest mom usually wins the
guy for her daughter to date.
Plus, mothers are not always a
reflection of their kids.
I guess I just don’t understand
why these are the popular
shows on television. Witty cartoons,
educational channels
such as the History Channel,
and sketch comedy shows, for
instance, are real television.
Reality shows, as well as the
people in them, need a reality
check.
Cell Phone Concept for the
Future
By Kyle Bassett
Many cell phones these days do more
than allow people to talk to each other.
Most cell phones also take pictures. A
new concept phone for the future is the
WYSIWYG, “What You See Is What
You Get,” cell phone. If this new design
comes into production, it will be able to
hang with the mainstream cell phones
Half of the WYSIWYG phone is set up
like a normal cell phone, but the other
half of it is a transparent viewfinder. This
cell phone gets its name from the viewfinder
which is used to take pictures. The
design for the WYSIWYG would come
with a QVGA (Quarter Video Graphics
Array) touchscreen and a 3 megapixel
camera. It’s only a concept and may not
even come to exist.
Industrial designer Pei-Hua Huang is
the person who came up with the new
design. The WYSIWYG would be a hot
new trend if it was ever put into production.
Where Are They Now? Kel Mitchell
By: Myles Amor
Kel Mitchell. We mostly remember him from the show
Kenan and Kel for his clumsy actions and his love for orange
soda. He also became well known for his appearances
in various sketches on the Nickelodeon show All
That. He has also been in other movies, sitcoms, and music
videos including Good Burger, Sister Sister, Kanye West’s
music video All Falls Down, One on One, and Take the
Cake.
Since most of us haven’t heard too much about Kel since
the old days of Kenan and Kel we all are wondering what
is he doing now? Well recently he has been focusing on
his music career. He peaked in his music career in 1996
when the song “Watch Me Do My Thang” hit number 40
on the Immature's Billboard Hot 100 list. Today he is focusing
more on parodiess of today’s more popular songs.
On Kel’s myspace page you can listen to a number of his
parodies including “Scariest Girl”, parody of “Beautiful
Girls”, “Hot Grease Poppin”, parody of “Big Things Poppin’
(Do It)”, and the more popular “Same Curl” which is
a parody of “Same Girl” by R. Kelly and Usher Raymond.
Kel’s career has come a
long way from when he first
started acting when he was
13 years old. His early succes
with Nickelodean in his
late teens has come a long
way as he now resorts to
writing parodies that make
fun of Micheal Jackson’s
curly hair in the ‘80s. I think
it’s safe to say that Kel
Mitchell peaked too soon,
and is now on the downfall.
Top 10 songs that should have been on
Guitar Hero according to
http://hushedcasket.com/node/1991
10. “Bloodline” by Slayer
9. “Pour Some Sugar on Me” by
Def Leppard
8. “Highway to Hell” by AC/DC
7. “I Drink Alone” by George Thorogood
6. “Down on Me” by Jackyl
5. “Pushing Me Away” by Linkin Park
4. “Dr. Feelgood” by Motley Crue
3. “Blood Pollution” by Steel Dragon
2. “Stairway to Heaven” by Led Zeppelin
1. “Ride the Lightning” by Metallica
The recent film adaptation
of The Golden
Compass has already
gone through much
controversy. Phillip
Pullman, well known
for his atheistic views,
wrote a children’s adventure
fantasy series
that hinted at some of
his religious and sociological
views through
analysis. According to
a many Christian supporters,
he is attempting
to abolish their
religion by writing
these books and targeting
them towards a
broad audience, including
children.
In the past, there
have been many fantasy
adventure novels
written that were targeted
towards everyone;
most notable was
Lord of the Rings.
Both of these series are
based around the common
idea of the abolishment
of a tyrannical
power. Although Lord
of the Rings is more
subtle when relating
the story to religion, it
still did not cause any
trouble for the religion
concerning children.
The Golden Compass
relates names of characters
back to Catholicism.
Because of this,
Christians believe that
Phillip Pullman is trying
to manipulate children
to denounce
Catholic faith. Albert
Mohler of the Southern
Baptist Theological
Opinion : Relax, It’s
Just a Story
By: Thomas Knodell
Seminary says that
“Pullman has an
agenda. That agenda is
atheism.” Literature
has always commentated
on religion, dating
back to even before
Christianity. Like most
authors, Pullman isn’t
trying to start an atheistic
revolution; he’s
just expressing his
ideas through literature.
Even if he was,
what gives Christians
the right to spread
films glorifying Christianity
to kids? Shows
like Veggie Tales are
obviously persuading
kids into accepting
Christianity when The
Golden Compass is
just expressing an idea.
What entertains a
child in a film isn’t a
deep meaning. Fighting
polar bears will
hold a child’s attention
for the entire film. No
child under the age of
fifteen is going to understand
exactly what
Pullman was saying,
let alone denounce
their faith. That is absolutely
absurd. If parents
don’t enjoy the
meaning of the film,
then they have the
right to not watch it.
There is nobody forcing
them to see it.
There is no reason
for any sort of controversy.
It’s clear that it
is now not possible to
express views in the
eye of the public without
being harassed.
