(1942 to 2013)<br />

The late Speaker of the People’s Consultative Assembly of Indonesia passed away on<br />

8 June 2013. He was warded at the S<strong>in</strong>gapore General Hospital after suffer<strong>in</strong>g a heart<br />

attack. He leaves beh<strong>in</strong>d wife, Ibu Megawati Sukarnoputri, the former President of<br />

Indonesia and three children. His body was moved to the Indonesian Embassy where<br />

it was ly<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> state and many Indonesians and S<strong>in</strong>gaporeans came to pay their last<br />

respects. His body was then flown back the next day <strong>in</strong> an Indonesian military aircraft<br />

and buried at the Kalibata Heroes Cemetery and he was given a full state funeral with<br />

President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono presid<strong>in</strong>g over the official ceremony.<br />

He was born <strong>in</strong> Jakarta on 31 December 1942 and his family came from Palembang-<br />

M<strong>in</strong>angkabau. He graduated from the Sriwijaya University’s Law Faculty <strong>in</strong> 1966 and<br />

began his political career as a member of the Indonesian National Student Movement<br />

(Gerakan Mahasiswa Nasional Indonesia or GMNI)<br />

To celebrate his 70th birthday <strong>in</strong> December last year, he published his biography,<br />

Gelora Kebangsaan Tak Kunjung Padam (The National Spirit Rema<strong>in</strong>s Alive). He<br />

shared the major milestones of his life as well as his thoughts on many national issues.<br />

Pak Taufiq together with Ibu Megawati had actively supported the Indonesian<br />

Democratic Party – Struggle or PDI-P (Partai Demokrasi Indonesia Perjuangan),<br />

one of the lead<strong>in</strong>g political parties <strong>in</strong> Indonesia. S<strong>in</strong>ce 2008, he was the leader of the<br />

PDI-P’s Muslim religious w<strong>in</strong>g, the BMI (Baitul Muslim<strong>in</strong> Indonesia). He was widely<br />

identified with PDI-P and was a frequent commentator on national matters such as<br />

preparations for the 2014 legislative and presidential elections <strong>in</strong> Indonesia.<br />

Almarhum has constantly rem<strong>in</strong>ded the nation, the importance of uphold<strong>in</strong>g the<br />

state’s four pillars - namely the Pancasila, the 1945 Constitution, the nation’s motto of<br />

unity <strong>in</strong> diversity and national unity.<br />

Just like the title of his book, the legacy of his hard work and commitment <strong>in</strong> serv<strong>in</strong>g<br />

Indonesia will also always rema<strong>in</strong> alive.<br />
