A CARING
MINISTRY
When you see people who
are sad, lonely or griefstricken,
don't just tell them
you care - show them you
care. Ask them how they
are, listen to what they
have to say, share the love
of Jesus. And if their need is
great, encourage them to
consider Stephen Ministry
as a way to receive the
transforming love and care
of Jesus. Show them you
care, and you can make a
real difference in their life.
First Church's first Stephen
Ministers were commissioned
on January 12, 1986. Since
then, over 100 people have
become trained Stephen Ministers.
The most frequent comment
heard from a Stephan Minister
is that what they learned in
class has been so helpful to
them, not only in their Stephen
care giver relationship, but in
their everyday lives with family
and friends.
Come and learn more about
Stephen Ministry at the
next continuing education
program, open to all:
Dear Friends,
As the New Year opens, once again we have the chance to make a fresh
start. I don't know about you, but the thought of resolutions often makes
me feel more guilty than inspired.
Recently I read a suggestion that has sparked my imagination about
resolutions: picture yourself at the end of 2010, happy and pleased with
what you have done with this year. What would it look like? What will you have done to
feel this way? To add to that idea, I am asking myself, what would make God happy and
pleased with what I have done this year? Perhaps you will have accomplished something
for yourself and for others that make you feel proud. Perhaps you have done something
differently that makes you feel spiritually contented and alive? Perhaps you will have
made the world a better place for the next generation.
As we do every year, on January 10 we will celebrate the Renewal of Baptismal Vows in
worship. As you approach your own renewed commitment, I invite you to ponder your
own resolutions. Happy New Year!
Every blessing,
What makes First Church
Special...
First Presbyterian Church is a safe place - it provides shelter
from the storm of life! It's a place to worship God and to
build our relationship with Him. First Church is a place Beth Mynhier
to celebrate the occasions that mark our lives; weddings, remembrances,
and membership in this community of spiritual nurture.
FLOWER MINISTRY
Flowers in the niches during worship are an enhancement to the beautiful sanctuary
and remind us of the beauty of God's creation. If you would like to donate flowers
to be placed in the niches for Sunday worship, please sign your name on the 2010
Flower Chart on the wall outside the office. After your donation, the flowers may
be taken with you, left for distribution to our shut-ins, or shared with one arrangement
taken with you and one left for shut-ins. The space in front of the communion table
is also available. Contact Sarah Seccombe for further information at
sseccombe@firstchurchlf.org or (847) 234-6250 ext 226.
NEW MEMBER CLASS will be held on Sundays, January 10,
First Church Children Follow the Star
On Sunday, January 3, Sunday School children will follow the star to an Epiphany
celebration in Fellowship Hall. Please join us for the 9:00am worship service,
followed by a Special Event for pre- and grade- schoolers, with middle school
students volunteering. We'll learn about Epiphany, read a wonderful story,
The Mysterious Star, and enjoy a service project - making star-shaped cookies
for the Night Ministry. We will learn that God sent a special star to guide the way
to Jesus, and our star-shaped cookies will share Jesus' light with the homeless
people who receive cookies and hot cocoa on cold nights.
CALVIN’S CORNER
DIVERTED BY WAR
In 1536, Calvin left Basel to visit Italy and then
returned to Paris to settle affairs, as there had
been an amnesty granted by the Edict of Coucy
that briefly made the plight of the French
Reformed tolerable in their own homeland.
In Paris, he collected his brother Antoine and
half-sister Marie and set out on the road to
Strasbourg, leaving France behind forever.
He found himself on the road again, intending
to go to Strasbourg. However, due to war
between Francis I and Charles V, the direct
route from Paris to Strasbourg was blocked by
Imperial troop movements in Lorraine, and so
Calvin took a wide detour to the south, through
Lyon, then east to Geneva. His intent was to
spend only a single night there and then to move
on to Strasbourg, but upon his arrival, a friend
informed the leader of the Reformed movement
in Geneva, Guillaume Farel, of Calvin’s
presence in the city. Farel, upon hearing of the
presence in Geneva of the already famous
Calvin, appealed immediately to Calvin’s sense
of the need to advance the cause of the new
church, essentially blackmailing him into
staying permanently. As Calvin put it, “I had
intended to continue in the same way [to
Strasbourg], until finally Master Guillaume
Farel kept me in Geneva, not so much by
advice and exhortation, as by a dreadful
adjuration, as if God from on high had
extended his hand over me to stop me.”
Thus, by the hand of God, and that of
Guillaume Farel, did Calvin remain in Geneva,
and in so doing left behind the comfortable life
of a scholar and writer, becoming instead a
“public figure” at age 26, a notion that terrified
the timid young man. “Any hope for peace in
the academic climate of the College had . . .
failed. Until the day he died, Calvin would find
no rest . . “
or have not made a pledge since 2007 are considered
new and are eligible to be matched
Fisherman's Fund matching gift program will
expire on March 31, 2010
If you have already submitted a new pledge for 2010,
it will be matched by the Fisherman's Fund

Many families in our congregation have been hit hard by these
economic times. Remarkably, most have still made pledges for 2010.
In fact, participation in pledging to date has increased by almost 10% versus last year… more
families are making pledge commitments than have in recent history. However, because of
the economy, many members of our congregation have had to decrease their pledge
commitments, leaving us approximately $323,217 short of our goal for our 2010 budget.
Therefore, we appeal to those who are able, to contribute what you can over and above your
previously submitted pledge commitment for 2010, to fill the need left by those in distress.
With gratitude,
TIDBITS FROM ARCHIVES From Session Records of December 9, 1933
Discussion followed concerning incidental music during the January communion.
It was suggested that Mr. Gruenstein play quietly and that if he preferred to use
familiar hymns, change of tunes should be made only in the intervals between the
passing of the bread and the cup.
