CURTIS IS COMMUNITY 

The year 2011-2012 has been an energizing one for Curtis 

Memorial Library. We’ve been working hard to bring more 

programming to the library, to update our book and e-book 

collections and to make a number of important upgrades to our 

beautiful space. The result of all this work is a bright, beautiful 

building, filled and bustling with people attending programs, 

borrowing materials and enjoying the space. 

During the month of September our staff members have been 

out and about in Brunswick and Harpswell, encouraging folks 

without library cards to get one. We’ve had a great response to 

the drive, bringing in over 250 new cardholders as of 

mid-September. 

We’ve enjoyed this process because it got us out into the 

community and it gave us a chance to hear how people view 

Curtis. Here are some of the comments that I heard in just one 

morning at the farmers market: 

“We love Curtis. We take our kids in there two-three times a 

week to go to the story times and get picture books.” 

“I’m not going to get a library card for my son yet. I promised 

him that on his next birthday he could get his very own 

library card and we’ll make a big event out of it. He is so 

excited that he can hardly wait!” 

“My daughter is part of Spurwink and wants to volunteer at 

the library. I want her to volunteer because it is important 

that she has responsibilities. I like the idea that she can do it 

at the library.” 

These comments reinforce for all of us that the library really does 

“build community” which is at the heart of our mission and 

vision. Curtis provides staff, services and spaces that enhance 

the quality of life here and help make this community so special. 

This Annual Report is a recognition and thank you to the Towns 

of Brunswick and Harpswell, and all of the individuals, families 

and businesses that help support the work of Curtis through 

financial contributions. We could not do the library’s work without 

that support. You do so much to help make this organization 

a wonderful resource for everyone in the community – thank 

you.

The mission of Curtis Memorial Library provides essential 

guidance to the library staff and Board, helping focus our 

services, guide our interactions with patrons and prioritize the 

allocation of resources. As we live our mission day-to-day, all of 

us at Curtis hold our responsibility to the community foremost 

in mind.

On the left is the 2011-2012 list of donors to the Curtis Memorial Library 

Endowment Funds. These generous supporters are building on the 

legacy initiated by our most forward-thinking patrons over the years. 

The funds themselves (see catalog on page 11) reflect the deep 

conviction by community members that Curtis is a vital resource that 

merits strong support over the long term. The range of purposes 

designated by the founders of the funds includes support for library 

operations, the maintenance of the building and grounds and building 

the library’s collections. 

The principal for the funds is invested in a portfolio professionally 

managed by UBS. A portion of the earnings is drawn each year for the 

stated purpose of each fund. 

Anyone interested in establishing a new endowment fund is encouraged 

to contact Liz Doucett, Library Director. Donations to existing funds are 

welcome any time.

HELPING TO BUILD A COMMUNITY 

AT CURTIS MEMORIAL LIBRARY 

Curtis Friends continues to work year-round to support all that the library 

does.This year our support took the form of book sales, donations to 

enhance adult programming, monies to bring the Bestseller Express 

collection to CML, bringing local speakers to CML, and cleaning up the 

grounds in fall and spring among many other things. All that we do is 

made possible through membership dues, donations, and revenues from 

our book sales. 

Many hands helped our fall children’s book sale and annual spring book 

sale continue high levels of success. We had a record number of books 

donated to these sales and a very high percentage went out the door. 

Leftover books were donated to Goodwill Industries.These all-out 

community events were enjoyed by all ages. 

We continue to enjoy growth in all levels of membership. The emphasis 

on renewing memberships has been very successful and has enabled 

members to renew in a timely manner. Membership numbers and 

receipts from dues are both up from last year, and we continue to look for 

new ways to reach into the community to find new members and let 

them know about all that Curtis has to offer. 

As we look to the future, we will continue to provide the support needed 

to make Curtis Memorial Library the outstanding community institution it 

is.Your contributions and continued membership to Curtis Friends is vital 

to help us make this happen.Thank you to all those listed in this Annual
