A Messege from the President 

and Board Chairman 

During this past year, the Liberty 

Lutheran Family of Services has worked 

together to move into a future that is 

responsive to the needs of the clients, 

residents and families we serve. 

In spite of significant reimbursement 

changes and government funding 

shortages, Liberty Lutheran has continued 

to have a keen focus on providing a 

continuum of services that are responsive 

to the diverse needs of the people we serve. 

The addition of The Village at Penn 

State, in State College, PA, brings new 

options for retirement living and our first 

University Based Retirement Community. 

Our partnership of the Lutheran 

Community at Telford and Liberty at 

Home celebrates our mutual heritage 

and commitment to older adults, and the 

ongoing work to transform Mary J. Drexel 

gives us a glimpse of the new, innovative 

services planned for this community. 

Growth requires the long term 

commitment of many individuals. 

The tireless efforts and generosity 

of our board and committee members, 

congregations, donors and volunteers 

continues to motivate our dedicated staff 

serving the most vulnerable among us.

A Gift from the Heart 

Pat Stanley, Director of the West 

Philadelphia Senior Community 

Center (WPSCC), learned the 

importance of giving time, skills 

and resources from her parents and 

grandparents. 

“My parents and grandparents 

didn’t have a lot, but they always 

felt that giving was important. I 

remember seeing my mother knit 

long white bandages to send to 

Lutheran World Relief for lepers. 

She always talked to us about what 

she was doing and why it was 

important,” recalls Pat. 

“I feel blessed and want to share the 

talents and skills I have to better the 

lives of others. I can’t imagine not 

helping others.” 

Located in the third-poorest 

legislative district in Pennsylvania, 

residents living near the Center 

experience intimidating crime 

rates, and live in sub-par housing. 

Although Pat sees the many daily 

challenges members face, she also 

sees the resilience of this community. 

With the support of her husband 

Tom Lackman, Pat frequently 

contributes to the organization. 

During their courtship, Pat and Tom 

learned they shared a love of music, 

drama and a commitment of giving 

to others. “When we married we 

agreed that contributing our time 

and money was a priority. Tom 

knows how important my work is to 

me and gives his time as a volunteer 

at special events and even taught a 

workshop at the Center.” Despite 

funding cuts, WPSCC continues to 

offer a breakfast and lunch program, 

provide food and utility vouchers 

“I feel blessed and 

want to share the talents 

and skills I have to better 

the lives of others.” 

for heat, electric and water, and help 

members apply to the Low Income 

Home Energy Assistance Program 

when appropriate. “If we can get 

someone some food to help them get 

to the end of the month, or help 

them with a repair to their home, 

it makes a world of difference,” 

Pat said. 

The center also provides 

members with regular health 

screenings and offers a 

variety of educational and 

fitness classes and many 

social events. WPSCC 

members are supported 

in their volunteerism, and 

frequently give their time 

and talents to others.

“It’s an honor to be part of the 

Liberty Lutheran family” 

Throughout my experience with Liberty Lutheran, 

I am amazed at the superb level of care provided 

for such a diverse group of individuals. It 

is rewarding to hear the many stories that 

demonstrate compassion, creativity, and 

collaboration; the essential elements of our caring 

communities. 

This is an exciting time to be a part of the Liberty 

Lutheran Family of Services. Plans are underway 

to begin fundraising to renovate our senior 

communities, bringing the latest advances in senior 

care to enrich the lives of our residents. There will 

also be an effort to strengthen our endowment, 

allowing us to better serve our children and families in need and provide 

benevolent care for seniors.

When you contemplate leadership, service and 

giving; it’s not what you have or what you’ve 

accomplished, it’s what you have given back that 

really matters. 

Liberty Lutheran launched the Vital Difference 

Fund, a fund that supports the needs of more 

than 50,000 people served by Liberty Lutheran 

this year. As a donor and volunteer, I have 

appreciated hearing the compelling stories about 

the children, families and seniors who gratefully 

express their appreciation for the compassionate 

and skilled care from staff dedicated to this 

service. 

Whether you are connected to the senior 

communities, children and families, refugees, or 

providing disaster relief for hurricane and flood 

victims this year, contributions to the Vital 

Difference Fund provide essential care and assistance to individuals and 

families in our community. So, thank you to the thousands of Liberty
