North Down’s biggest draw is 16 miles 

of unspoilt coastline, which runs from 

Belfast’s eastern edge to Holywood, Cultra, 

Craigavad, Helen’s Bay, Crawfordsburn, Bangor, 

Groomsport, Ballymacormick and Orlock to 

Portavoe. 

At the centre of it all is the historical seaside 

town of Bangor, renowned both at home and 

away for its restaurants, pubs and nightlife.

spuds grown just down the road and washed

By the sea 

So you’ve made it to North Down then it’s time to 

start enjoying all it has to offer. The best way? Hit 

the coast and breathe in the coastal air at the many 

beaches, harbours and seafronts that for centuries 

have been a draw for visitors from near and far. 

Bangor and Holywood has seafaring in its blood: now 

our seafronts, beaches, harbours and marina are a 

big draw to landlubbers of all ages.

Strickland’s Glen, Bangor 

North Down Coastal Path 

Runs along the southern shore of Belfast Lough.

Stride out along one of the finest shoreline 

walks in Ireland. Stretching from Holywood 

to Portavoe near Groomsport, the path has 

historic features and an abundance of wildlife. 

Leave your car at any one of the many access 

points including Holywood, Seapark, Marino, 

Cultra, Craigavad, Helen’s Bay, Crawfordsburn 

and Carnalea to dip into short sections at a 

time. Watch seals bobbing about in the waves.

wheelchair access.

From Eisenhower Pier, past the Long Hole, 

follow the Seacliff Road along the panoramic 

shoreline to beautifully landscaped Kingsland 

near Ballyholme Sailing Club, the Royal Ulster 

Yacht Club and not far from the picturesque 

village of Ballyholme. Play a round on the 

elevated pitch and putt course with its 

breathtaking views of Ballyholme Bay and the 

Antrim Coast, or enjoy a game of tennis. 

Tennis and pitch and putt open July and August, 

Monday-Friday, 10am-9pm, Saturday and 

Sunday 10am-5pm. 

Charge for games. Great playground and picnic 

area too. 

Ballyholme Beach and Park

Paddle in the surf along the mile-long beach, 

a long-time favourite for families to take a dip 

and build sand-castles. Take a walk along the 

sands to the National Trust nature reserve at 

Ballymacormick Point. Visit bustling Ballyholme 

‘village’. Banks Lane car park always accessible. 

Eisenhower Pier

Mosaics on Eisenhower Pier depict the 

Borough’s crucial role in WWII, including 

General Dwight D. Eisenhower’s historic sendoff 

to the hundreds of Allied ships gathered 

in Bangor Bay before the D-Day liberation of 

Europe. Under the pier is a colony of black 

guillemots, nicknamed the Bangor Penguins.

Stroll to the Sunken Gardens to see the McKee 

Clock and Bregenz House, Headquarters of HM 

Coastguard. From the Sunken Gardens continue 

along the promenade adjacent to the marina to 

Pickie Fun Park and onwards to the North Down 

Coastal Path. 

Pickie Fun Park

Pickie Fun Park has always been one of 

Northern Ireland’s most popular tourist 

attractions. Thanks to a major redevelopment 

project, it has recently been reinvigorated to 

offer a fantastic day out for a new generation 

of visitors. The Park now provides a mix of old 

favourites and new attractions. The ever popular 

Pickie Puffer, giant pedal swans and children’s 

play area remain, alongside new activities 

including an 18-hole maritime themed minigolf 

course, a children’s electric car track and a 

splash pad.

Ramble amid the leafy pathways of a shady 

glen with wildlife ponds and a trickling stream 

which passes through the gulleys into Smelt 

Mill Bay which forms part of the North Down 

Coastal Path. Connor Park is a popular open 

space for families beside the Glen. Open at all 

times. Wheelchair accessibility: Upper pond 

area only.

Seapark Recreation Grounds

Choose from a variety of activities at this 

seafront facility famous as the venue for 

fireworks displays. The seasonal attractions here 

are putting, tennis and bowls plus a children’s 

playground.

The displays reflect the pivotal role nearby 

Bangor Abbey held in early Christian Ireland and 

throughout Europe. Discover how the monks 

met their fate at the hands of the Vikings 

and visitors will love the full-size Monk’s Cell 

and Viking Long-house. Nostalgic displays on 

Bangor’s early days as a resort, plus a mini 

cinema combine with temporary exhibitions 

to make this a ‘must’ for all ages. Here you can 

also have a rest and enjoy a meal or snack in 

the Museum café.

Bangor Abbey

See one of the highlights of Bangor’s Christian 

Heritage - the oldest remains of the Abbey, 

which is associated with St Columbanus and 

St Comgall, are at St Malachy’s Wall, adjacent 

to the Old Gate Lodge. The present building 

dates from the mid 1800s but the tower is from 

the 15th Century. The churchyard has many 

fascinating gravestones including a memorial 

to the Titanic’s assistant surgeon. The exterior is 

accessible at all times.

Abbey Street and Newtownards Road Accessible 

by train (Stop Bangor) 

The Abbey is open seasonally and throughout

Walk up the rolling lawn to view this imposing 

building built in 1852 for Robert Edward Ward. 

It is presently the busy headquarters of North 

Down Borough Council who use the mansion’s 

spectacular grand saloon as the council 

chamber. It’s also home to the award-winning 

Bangor Castle Walled Garden.

accessible.

Grey Point Fort

Explore this unusual wartime artillery site 

and enjoy its commanding views over Belfast 

Lough for which it was built to protect from 

enemy invasion. Kids love it, but disabled access 

is limited. On the shore nearby is the obelisk 

marking the Measured Mile used by Harland & 

Cockle Row Cottages, Groomsport

Cockle Row Cottages

Make the 10-minute journey from Bangor back 

300 years to when the little sailing harbour 

was a major port. Cockle Row Cottages have 

displays of tourist and heritage information and 

a small gift shop of local crafts and mementos 

to take home. 

Free family friendly events take place at the 

cottages every weekend, 2-4pm, starting 

from Easter Saturday and Sunday to the first 

weekend in September, events include the 

annual Eagle Wing event when Ulster’s link with 

the USA is celebrated with the commemoration 

of the voyage of the Eagle Wing ship that set 

sail from Groomsport harbour for the new 

world in 1636.

Holywood Priory 

Experience our rich ecclesiastical heritage, at 

the Old Priory which has remains dating back 

to the 13th Century. It was the town’s parish 

church from 1615 to 1844. In the churchyard 

are buried Robert Lloyd Praeger, the renowned 

naturalist and his sculptor sister Rosamund 

whose bronze statue “Johnny the Jig” stands 

in front of the children’s playground in High 

Street.

Ulster Folk & Transport Museum

life from 100 years ago. Discover town and 

countryside with original cottages, farms,

beautiful parkland of the Folk Museum. Chat to 

costumed visitor guides as they demonstrate

steam locomotives or experience the sensation 

of flight in the Transport Museum bursting 

with horse-drawn carriages, electric trams, 

motorbikes, fire engines and vintage cars. 

The timeless tale of Titanic comes to life 

through iconic objects and historic buildings 

at TITANICa: The Exhibition and TITANICa: The 

People’s Story. Discover more than 500 original 

artefacts including loan objects from RMS 

Titanic that were recovered from the bottom 

of the icy Atlantic. At the outdoor Folk Museum 

you can look around and be captivated by the 

era of the world’s most famous ship. Walk the 

historic streets and meet the people who built 

the ship and lived in her time.

Holywood Maypole 

Holywood’s most well known feature is the 

town’s Maypole, the only one surviving in 

Ireland. Early maps show a Maypole has stood 

on the site since the 1620’s. Today it is still the 

focus of the annual May Day Celebrations and 

fair, when local school children dance around 

the Maypole.

Balloo Nature Reserve

A popular outdoor attraction made up of two 

distinct areas - Balloo Woodland and Balloo 

Wetland. The Wetland reserve has two large 

ponds, a picnic area, paths and information 

panels. It provides a home for a wide variety of 

wetland wildlife including many plant and bird 

species, butterflies, dragonflies, newts, frogs and 

much more. 

The circular boardwalk around the site is pram 

and wheelchair friendly. 

The Woodland is full of mature native trees 

and woodland plant life, with a small pond 

to provide a home to some watery wildlife. 

Species to look out for include oak, speckled 

wood butterfly, goldfinch and foxglove.

Balloo Road, next to the SIGNAL Centre of 

Business Excellence, Bangor. 

Bangor Castle Walled Garden

The award-winning Bangor Castle Walled 

Garden, located in the tranquil grounds 

of Castle Park, offers 2.5 acres of prestige 

horticulture and is popular with visitors of all 

ages. The garden is divided into four different 

sections, each with its own horticultural 

personality. It also boasts two unique pieces of 

sculpture inspired by North Down’s maritime 

history. There is easy disabled access, ample 

seating, modern toilet facilities and a café 

serving tea/coffee and light snacks. 

The garden won the Royal Horticultural Society 

Award for Permanent Landscaping in its first 

year of opening. Formal tours can be arranged 

by appointment.

Castle Park

A walk through this wooded wonderland is an 

exhilarating experience throughout the seasons. 

Obtain the Castle Park Nature Trail Guide from 

North Down Museum, located in the grounds of 

Castle Park with Bangor Castle (Town Hall), and 

follow the arrowed pathways. Stroll along the 

tree-lined avenue to explore the formal gardens 

of the Town Hall. Examine the sundial in the 

forecourt, believed to be from the 8th Century 

monastic origin. 

Explore the Arboretum on the south side of the 

Town Hall, which contains a fine collection of 

mature conifers and deciduous trees.

Crawfordsburn Country Park

Head for Ulster’s most popular country parks 

to relish its 3.5km of lovely beaches and 

riverside rambles that form part of the North 

Down Coastal Path. One of the way marked 

nature trails takes walkers through a deep 

wooded glen to the waterfall near The Old Inn, 

(Ireland’s oldest hotel, established in 1614) 

in lovely Crawfordsburn village via a towering 

railway viaduct. The excellent Visitor Centre has 

exhibitions on the parks wildlife and provides 

free way marked Trail maps. The panoramic café 

is famed for home-style cooking. This park is a

Ward Park

Feed the waterfowl and exotic birds in one of 

Ireland’s most delightful town parks. Waterside 

walks, ten tennis courts, famous bowling greens, 

a tricky putting green and an excellent activity 

playground for children make this an all-age

and lush parkland which boasts beautiful 

chestnut trees. Great fun can be had at the 

children’s playground, and collecting conkers

along the steep banks of the quaintly named 

Twistle Burn, including a picnic area. Accessible

Redburn Country Park

Be prepared for an energetic climb up the waymarked 

trails of this steep park to enjoy great 

views of Belfast Lough from the Holywood 

escarpment. The dense canopy of beech wood 

is particularly spectacular in spring when 

the woodland is carpeted with bluebells. Red 

squirrels now scamper around the disused 

Bear Pit of the former private zoo kept by the 

original owners, the Dunville whiskey distilling 

family. Open at all times.

Craigantlet

Get away from it all or go orienteering in 

the hilly hinterland of Holywood among the 

conifers of this elevated forest overlooking 

Ballysallagh trout-fishing reservoirs with views 

of Clandeboye, Bangor, the coast of Antrim and 

even Scotland.

Around here, Golf dates back over 125 years, and North 

Down have nine courses all with stunning scenery and 

views stretching all the way across the Irish Sea to Scotland. 

There’s something for everyone, from the high handicapper

Bird Watching 

Birdwatchers flock to North Down for the

Shore Fishing 

Shore fishing is popular along the North Down 

Coastal Path from various points including 

Ballymacormick Point, Eisenhower Pier, Grey 

Point Fort and Orlock Point in the summer 

(May-Oct) where the catch is great for 

mackerel, pollack, sea trout and mullet. In the 

quiet months (Nov-Apr) you may even catch 

whiting, codling or dogfish. For local advice, 

bait, tackle, and to purchase a fishing licence,

Take the time to explore the rich vein of 

Christian heritage running through the 

landscape of North Down, Bangor and 

Groomsport, left when the monks came to 

Bangor in the 15th century, these include: 

• Bangor Abbey, First Bangor Presbyterian 

Church, St Columbanus Church of Ireland and 

North Down Museum. 

• Take a more contemporary look at recent 

history, at the Ulster Folk and Transport 

Museum and experience the birth of 

modern transport in all its glory, from horse 

drawn carriages, electric trams, motorbikes 

to fire-engines and vintage cars at the 

transport museum.

• Pickie Funpark in Bangor, always a popular 

attraction has recently been updated for 

the 21st century without losing any of 

its characteristic charm. It’s the ideal place 

to start a fun day out for the family with its 

adventure playground, giant pedal boat 

swans, Pickie Puffer steam train and café. 

• Take a walk through Castle Park and Bangor 

Castle Walled Garden (open seasonally) then 

stop off at the North Down Museum where 

the 200 year history of Bangor as a seaside 

destination is full of fun and fascination. 

• Bangor’s Town Centre is an excellent place

restaurants, cafes and bistros, or alternatively, 

enjoy a picnic in nearby Ward Park

On those days the sun fails to shine in the
