National Energy Conservation Day celebrated.<br />

DECEMBER THE 16 TH , 2011<br />

India and Australia signed an agreement to amend DTAA (Double Taxation Avoidance<br />

Agreement) with the objective of ensuring more effective exchange of financial<br />

information between the two countries. DTAA was signed between India and Australia<br />

in 1991.<br />

The former French President, Jacques Chirac was given a two-year suspended sentence<br />

Kim Jong-il, North Korea's reclusive “Dear Leader” who ruled the country for 17 years,<br />

leading it to nuclear power status but also presiding over a devastating famine, died.<br />

Veteran Bollywood actress Hema Malini was named the person of the year by People for<br />

the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA). PETA named her the Person of the Year for<br />

raising her voice to oppose cruelty to animals and her staunch commitment to a<br />

vegetarian diet.<br />

On behalf of PETA, she had recently appealed to the minister of Environment and<br />

Forests to take immediate steps to end the cruel tradition of jallikattu. Jallikattu is a sport<br />

event in Tamil Nadu in which terrified bulls are kicked, punched, jumped on, dragged<br />

to the ground and otherwise tormented. In response to this appeal, the Ministry issued a<br />

notification in The Gazette of India stating that bulls could no longer be used as<br />

performing animals.<br />

The Sixth Economic Census is conducted on All India basis covering all the States and<br />

Controversial film, Dam999 directed by Sohan Roy made it to a shortlist for the Oscars<br />

under the Best Picture category. The film is based on a catastrophe caused by a 100-<br />

year-old dam in India.<br />

The Maharashtra government launched the Rajiv Gandhi Jeevandayi Arogya Yojana,<br />

enabling families with annual income of less than Rs. 1 lakh to avail free medical<br />

facilities worth Rs. 1.5 lakh.<br />

The Bihar Government launched a slew of schemes for the welfare of the fishermen,<br />

including construction of 2000 houses for them and twin insurance schemes to cover<br />

their life and produces.<br />

Dipika Pallikal claimed her third WISPA title of the year, and fifth overall, when she<br />

overcame a spirited challenge from fourth seed Joey Chan of Hong Kong to win the<br />

Rashtriya Lok Dal (RLD) leader Ajit Singh was inducted into the Union Cabinet as civil<br />

aviation minister.<br />

Jamil Ahmad was declared the winner of the Shakti Bhatt First Book Prize for 2011 his<br />

book The Wandering Falcon.<br />

Tamil writer Su. Venkatesan, who captured 600 years of history of Madurai between<br />

1310 and 1920 in his debut novel Kaaval Kottam, has won the Sahitya Akademi award<br />

for the year 2011.<br />

KV Varadaraj, Former Olympian & Winner of Gold Medal in 1951 Asian Games passed<br />

away. Varadaraj was nicknamed 6-footer by the English.<br />

India striker Sunil Chhetri was voted Player of the Year by the All India Football<br />

Federation.<br />

The Sangeet Natak Akademi has conferred the Tagore Akademi Ratna award on noted<br />

broadcaster, artist and musicologist Balantrapu Rajanikantha Rao.<br />

The Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences chose Apple co-founder Steve Jobs to be<br />

posthumously honoured with a Grammy award for his creative vision and his<br />

contribution to music technology.<br />

The Union cabinet of India approved 4.5% share for minorities within the 27% OBC<br />

quota in jobs and university seats. The approval will come in force from 1 January,<br />

2012.<br />

Justice Rajinder Sachar Committee Report-released in November 2006- had found the<br />

minority community under-represented in all spheres of professional and public life.<br />

India's top nuclear scientist and nuclear physicist PK Iyengar who designed India’s first<br />

atomic bomb passed away.<br />

NASA's Kepler mission discovered the first Earth-size planets, called Kepler-20e and<br />

Kepler-20f, orbiting a sun-like star outside our solar system.<br />

DECEMBER THE 21 ST , 2011<br />

The Lokpal and Lokayuktas Bill was introduced in Lok Sabha. The bill was aimed at<br />

setting up the body of Lokpal at the Centre and Lokayuktas at the level of the States.<br />

Government also withdrew earlier Lokpal Bill, 2011 and decided to introduce a new<br />

comprehensive Lokpal and Lokayuktas Bill, 2011 Bill after consideration of the<br />

suggestions made by the Parliamentary Committee, which recommended significant<br />

changes in the scope and content of the earlier Bill.<br />

Jacob E. Goldman, a founder of the Palo Alto Research Center (PARC) that developed<br />

breakthrough computing innovations died.<br />

Parliament has passed the Constitution (Scheduled Tribes) Order (Amendment) Bill,<br />

2011 to approve the according of Constitutional Scheduled Tribal status to certain<br />

tribes in the North-eastern states of Manipur and Arunachal Pradesh. The bill includes<br />

six more tribes namely Thangal, Zeme, Mate, Inpui, Liangmai, Rongmei from Manipur<br />

and substitutes Galo in place of Galong in the list of Scheduled tribes in Arunachal<br />

Pradesh.<br />

A 1,000-year-old manuscript, “Nahjul Balagha”, said to be a collection of letters,<br />

speeches and aphorisms of the fourth Caliphate of Islam Hazrat Ali, was released for<br />

publication at Aligarh Muslim University by Iran's former Foreign Minister Ali Akbar<br />

Wilayati.<br />

The one-man Commission of Mukul Mudgal, former Chief Justice of the Punjab and<br />

Haryana High Courts, appointed to probe into issues relating to the prevalence of<br />

DECEMBER THE 23 RD , 2011<br />

As per the Charities Aid Foundation’s World Giving Index, India ranked as the most<br />

uncharitable nation of South Asia in 2011. India is the worst performer in South Asia<br />

with a global ranking of 91.<br />

Vice President and Rajya Sabha Chairman M Hamid Ansari released two books<br />

Expression of Thoughts (English) and Izhar-e-Khayal (Urdu) authored by K.Rahman<br />

Khan, Deputy Chairman of Rajya Sabha.<br />

Lanco Infratech Limited senior vice-president A. Narasimhan has been awarded the<br />

“Power Brands Hall of Fame” honour for enterprising communication professional of<br />

the year 2011.<br />

Ramdas M. Pai has become the second Indian to be honoured with ‘Datuk', a Malaysian<br />

title. Dr. Pai was conferred the title ‘Darjah Mulia Seri Melaka' on December 10.<br />

Actor Shah Rukh Khan is the other Indian who has been conferred the title.<br />

The honorary title was instituted in 1978 by the Melaka Government. It is awarded to<br />

an individual who has performed highly commendable and meritorious service to the<br />

Malacca State in particular and to Malaysia in general. Dr. Pai was awarded the Padma<br />

Bhushan earlier this year.<br />

DECEMBER THE 24 TH , 2011<br />

The Haryana Government has decided to introduce a new scheme of issuing electronic<br />

smart cards for farmers in the State. With the issuance of this card, the farmers will not<br />

need to keep a separate record of their yields and income.<br />

The Large Hadron Collider makes its first clear observation of a new particle, the boson<br />

Chib 3P, since opening in 2009.<br />

DECEMBER THE 25 TH , 2011<br />

'The Protester' is the Time's 2011 Person of the Year, as the magazine honoured those<br />

who stood up for common people, from India's anti-graft crusader Anna Hazare to<br />

Tunisia's street vendor Mohammed Bouazizi, who set himself on fire sparking the Arab<br />

Spring.<br />

Theatre director, screenplay writer and actor Satyadev Dubey, credited with<br />

introducing existential and absurd theatre, passed away.<br />

A Delhi court set 6 February as a deadline for 22 social networking sites including<br />

Facebook, Google, Yahoo and Microsoft to remove all anti-religious or anti-social<br />

content. The court directed the social networking sites to file compliance reports by 6<br />

February 2012.<br />

Elections to the Goa, Manipur, Punjab, Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand Assemblies will<br />

be held over the three months of January, February and March 2012.<br />

Indonesia’s experienced shuttler, Taufik Hidayat, won his first Men’s Singles title of<br />

2011 at the 2011 Syed Modi India Open Grand Prix Gold badminton championship<br />

when he defeated Sourabh Verma of India.<br />
