Hospice and palliative care physicians preparing for the <strong>American</strong> <strong>Board</strong><br />

<strong>of</strong> Medical Specialties (ABMS) or the <strong>American</strong> Osteopathic Association (AOA)<br />

Bureau <strong>of</strong> Osteopathic Specialists hospice and palliative medicine certification<br />

examinations should plan to attend. Other practitioners seeking a solid<br />

review <strong>of</strong> hospice and palliative medicine competencies, such as medical<br />

oncologists, family physicians, advanced practice nurses, physician assistants,<br />

anesthesiologists, internists, physiatrists, hospitalists, surgeons, and emergency<br />

medicine physicians, will also benefit from this course.<br />

<strong>Course</strong> Objectives<br />

At the end <strong>of</strong> this course, participants should be able to<br />

1. assess patient pain, other symptoms, and side effects,<br />

and recommend a care plan based on the best available evidence<br />

2. identify psychological and psychiatric aspects <strong>of</strong> patient care<br />

including grief and bereavement<br />

3. perform a spiritual, existential, social, and cultural assessment<br />

<strong>of</strong> patients and recommend care plans<br />

4. analyze communication techniques used among the interdisciplinary<br />

care team, families, and patients in palliative care<br />

5. discuss legal and ethical concerns related to palliative care<br />

6. assess pain and symptoms and recommend a care plan<br />

for pediatric patients based on developmental needs.<br />

Continuing Education Credit<br />

Physicians<br />

The <strong>American</strong> <strong>Academy</strong> <strong>of</strong> Hospice and Palliative Medicine (<strong>AAHPM</strong>) is<br />

accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education<br />

(ACCME) to sponsor continuing medical education for physicians.<br />

<strong>AAHPM</strong> designates the <strong>Intensive</strong> <strong>Board</strong> <strong>Review</strong> <strong>Course</strong> for a maximum <strong>of</strong> 22 AMA<br />

PRA Category 1 Credits. Physicians should only claim credit commensurate with<br />

the extent <strong>of</strong> their participation in the activity.<br />

Application for CME credit for the <strong>Intensive</strong> <strong>Board</strong> <strong>Review</strong> <strong>Course</strong> has been filed with the <strong>American</strong> <strong>Academy</strong><br />

<strong>of</strong> Family Physicians and the <strong>American</strong> Medical Directors Association. Determination <strong>of</strong> credit is pending.<br />

No other type <strong>of</strong> continuing education credit will be <strong>of</strong>fered.<br />

discount for the <strong>Intensive</strong> <strong>Board</strong> <strong>Review</strong> <strong>Course</strong>. Space is limited. Participants<br />

All cancellations must be made in writing. A $95 processing fee will apply<br />

to all cancellations. No refunds will be made on cancellations postmarked after<br />

July 21, 2010. All refunds will be processed after the course. <strong>AAHPM</strong> reserves<br />

the right to substitute faculty or to cancel or reschedule a course due to low<br />

enrollment or other unforeseen circumstances. If <strong>AAHPM</strong> must cancel, registrants<br />
