OUTDOORS
INDOORS
THE OUTDOORS SHOW and The London Bike Show open at the west end of ExCeL
tomorrow, and it is hoped that many of their visitors will come through to the Tullett
Prebon London International Boat Show as well.
Occupying the north west section of ExCeL, the Outdoors Show and The London Bike Show
will be featuring displays from many of the top names in both activities, including Blacks,
Garmin, National Trust, Rock and Sun, Stanfords, Cervélo, Shimano, Saracen, and Madison, to
name a few.
There will be plenty of things to amuse the visitors, with an off-road driving experience, a
wilderness camp and a bike stage, to name just a few. There will be two entrances from the
Outdoors/Bike Show through to the North Hall of the Boat Show, as well as entrances via the
Boulevard, and visitors’ tickets will give them access to all three Shows.
The co-hosting of these three Shows presents all the exhibitors with an excellent opportunity to
present their products to people who might not ordinarily see them, and it is hoped that this crossover
will be mutually beneficial to all. If you get the chance to pop next door for a look, do so…it
should be good.
SEALINE INTERNATIONAL COLLECTED the coveted
HEALTH AND
EFFICIENCY
ONE OF THE UK’s leading healthcare intermediaries, The Private Health
Partnership (PHP), see it as their job to ensure customers understand
healthcare and help them make the right decision about what products to
purchase, and to recognise what benefits their choices offer. This is why BMF
have negotiated a great deal with PHP for its members.
At a time when customers are looking to save time and money, as well as
reap tangible benefits at a competitive price, PHP’s 22 years of knowledge and
expertise is invaluable. It’s not just prior to purchase they can help — there is
also the provision to take on claims assistance should you need it, saving vast
amounts of time and inconvenience when it’s least needed.
BMF members who want to take advantage of this member benefit can speak
to someone from PHP about healthcare during the Show. Visit them in the BMF
Members and Exhibitors Lounge on Wednesday, Thursday or Friday of this week.
ALISTAIR LAWRENCE
IT IS WITH great regret that
we report the death of
Alistair Lawrence, former
BMF Membership
Committee Chairman, and
BMF South Treasurer, who
passed away in the
evening of Monday 10th
January 2011.
David Moody commented
“He will be very sadly
missed by friends and the
industry. He was a
steadying influence on
everyone. I have never met
such an honest and straight
person. He mentored me
through everything while at
BMF South.”
Alistair kept himself very
busy with lots of projects,
never giving up his interest
in the marine industry and
was actively involved in the
Try-A-Boat campaign. He
was hugely passionate
about encouraging others to
try boating and to get out on
the water.
Alistair was awarded the
Peter Millward Memorial
Award in 2009 for his
significant contribution to
BMF Associations. Alistair
spent nearly 30 years
contributing to BMF
Associations. For most of
that time he was a member
of the BMF South
Committee where he has
served as their very able
Treasurer. He has been an
active member of the
Marine Trade Association for
a similar amount of time
and has been a permanent
fixture on the MTA
Committee.
He is survived by his wife,
two sons and grandchildren.

HENRI LLOYD
BACKS RTI
IN A POSITIVE New Year business announcement at the start of the Tullett Prebon London
International Boat Show, the Island Sailing Club (ISC), organisers of the J.P. Morgan Asset
Management Round The Island Race, have confirmed that one of the best known global brands in
technical sailing clothing design and manufacture, Henri Lloyd, has signed up to be the Official
Clothing Partner for the 2011 and 2012 RTI Races.
In announcing the news, the ISC Secretary, Lea Bennett, said: “This is a really exciting piece of
news for everyone involved in the race, especially as we celebrate our 80th Anniversary year in
2011. Having a clothing partner join us as Race Partner is a first for us, and we’re absolutely
delighted to welcome Henri Lloyd to the fold.”
In response, Paul Strzelecki, joint Managing Director of Henri Lloyd, said: “I am delighted to
announce our support of the J.P. Morgan Asset Management Round the Island Race by becoming
their Official Clothing Partner. We are proud to have the Henri Lloyd brand associated with one of the
largest and most popular yacht races in the world and look forward to working with the Island
Sailing Club over the next two years to ensure the event goes from strength to strength.”
GOOD COP, MAD COP
METROPOLITAN POLICE OFFICER Andy
Seery really is a Mad Cop. Last year he
completed his 30/30 Challenge, London-to-
Poland run to raise funds for Help for Heroes
and the 1st Batallion Coldstream Guards
wrist band appeal.
Dubbed the ‘Mad Cop’, Andy ran 40
marathons in 31 days that covered six
countries, which was an amazing
achievement for the policeman. But it was
not to end there.
Introducing…Mad Cop 2, The Great
European Row 2011. The rowing challenge,
set to cover 2500km of some of Europe’s
busiest roads through the Ukraine to finish in
Poland, has been launched here at the Show.
The challenge will be done on a converted
sailing dinghy designed with a series of
pulleys that will work off a rowing machine to
power the boat along the roads on wheels.
The Mad Cop 2 rowing challenge will start
in London on April 1st 2011 and Andy hopes
to reach Poland in mid-May. Having seen so
many young lives turned upside down as a
result of the conflict in Afghanistan, the
challenge is raising funds for the Army
Benevolent Fund (ABF).
Andy commented from the Show; “I am so
pleased to be here at the Show and to launch
the challenge. We are doing everything we
can to make this challenge a really special
one and the response we have had so far is
amazing. The ABF, the Soldiers’ charity, is a
very worthwhile cause, looking after our
heroes that have been physically or
mentally scarred by active service around the
world. Please support us, it will mean so
much to many deserving service families.”
Support for the challenge has been
excellent with backing coming from
Sunseeker, supplying specialist paint
for the boat and conversion by Mr Peter
Ashby. You can find Mad Cop 2 at
stand J70 in the North Hall.

OLIVER’S
ARMY
THE FIRST DAY of the Tullett Prebon London
Boat Show saw a surprise visit from singer
Newton Faulkner to support Oliver Rofix and his
Round Britain Sailing Challenge, on stand B4.
Called Oliver’s Travels, the challenge sees Olly
sailing his restored Valiant 18 around Britain to
raise awareness for the Anthony Nolan Trust and
recruit at least 1,000 more potential bone
marrow donors.
Five years ago, Oliver was diagnosed with an
extremely rare and life threatening form of
Leukaemia, and his only chance of survival was
a bone marrow transplant. Thanks to the
Anthony Nolan Trust a non-related donor was
found, one of only two possible matches out of
the nine million potential donors. Through the
Trust, the two were able to make contact and
met him and resolved to keep in touch.
When I heard about his challenge to sail
around Britain I wanted to support him.
It’s an amazing thing to do,” he said.
Newton climbed onboard Jolly Olly
6 BOAT SHOW NEWS
EXHIBITOR
ATTRACTIONS
THROUGHOUT THE WEEK we will be looking at how some of you have
embraced the concept of interactive visitor attractions and laid on the
sort of experience the visitors have been asking for.
RS SAILING
The Sailing Master sailing simulator on the RS stand has been a huge hit,
especially with the kids. This simple looking, but sophisticated, simulator is
very versatile, as it possible to use almost any dinghy, which then heels
and turns just as the boat would on the water when hit by the wind from
the large fan. RS say that there is a side benefit to having the device on
their stand, as it is great at occupying children whilst their parents
enquire about a new boat!
HARKEN
The Harken stand is a hive of interactivity this year, with on-demand
demonstrations of winch and block maintenance as well as touchscreens
giving product demonstrations and servicing information.
This stand is a development of their stands at the last London and
Southampton Shows, with more features added and demonstrations
perfected. Harken say that having interactivity on their stand has
really helped them sell their products.
SCHOOLS
MARINE
CHALLENGE
THE FINALS OF the Schools Marine Challenge, wherein schools compete
to make the fastest solar-powered model boat, took place yesterday,
and was won by Wilmington Academy. They signed up to the challenge
just a few weeks ago, and had simple, but effective boats, which got
them the fastest time on the day.
Astley Sports College came all the way from Cheshire for the challenge,
showing a fantastic commitment to the event. Both Leigh Academy and
Wilmington are doing Formula Sun within the curriculum as a BTec
qualification. Formula Sun is not just about getting the fastest time but about
learning whilst students do it. Knockhall Community Primary School brought
50 pupils along. They were very enthusiastic competitors, making a strong
impression on the leader board.
Overall 11 schools attended, with over 220 pupils. A very strong turnout for
our first official race day. We look forward to next year!
