“Let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us. Let us fix our eyes on Jesus…”
Hebrews 12:1-2a
FROM THE PRINCIPAL
From The Principal
Issue 5 - 1June Issue 2012 3 - 3 April 2011
At St George Christian School, we believe that it is important for our students to look beyond
themselves as they live. The word ‘compassion’ has its origins in Latin, meaning to ‘suffer with’, and
is a word that conveys this important human attribute. It implies a capacity to both recognize
the need of another and to respond in a way that brings relief. Consideration, respect, mercy and
generosity are elements of compassion. Compassion was demonstrated in the life of Jesus Christ
recorded in numerous eyewitness accounts.
One of these accounts used a powerful Greek word for compassion – splagchnizomai - in Matthew
9:36. This account records Jesus’ strong emotional response, that He was so upset with seeing people
in such a vulnerable state that it moved Him ‘in his innards or bowels’. (A person's innards represented
the seat of the warm, tender emotions or feelings.)
Another account, in Matthew 15:32, again connected Jesus’ feeling with His action. Jesus called
his disciples to Him and said, “I have compassion for these people; they have already been with me
three days and have nothing to eat. I do not want to send them away hungry, or they may collapse
on the way”.
The fullness of compassion is displayed in the way God absorbed our imperfection and shame
through His Son’s death and His invitation to all to know forgiveness and peace in our relationship with
Him.
It is vital in an era when we are exposed to seeing so much need, which can at times lead to
‘compassion fatigue’, that we don’t disconnect our compassionate feelings from our response to
act. Our emotions can be useful indicators, as are our senses, but of course as we mature, they don’t
need to dictate our action.
SGCS has for a number of years sought to provide a focus for the expression of our compassion as
a community. In so doing we demonstrate to our students that they can indeed respond in ways
that significantly help others. The Beyond Ourselves initiative, with a focus on a school community in
Vanuatu, enables this.
As I currently interview parents wanting to send their children to the school at our two major points
of entry, Kindergarten and Year 7, I am impressed with the vision most parents have of wanting their
child to be one who grows in their capacity to be considerate of others.
This week our students participated in V-Day and next week we will come together at our community
fundraising dinner for Vanuatu. At the dinner we will meet the team of students who are travelling to
Vanuatu in the July break. Check the school website for details. I hope to see you there.
Cafe 12 News
As we approach the colder days of winter, our hot orders have increased! Check out the menu on the school’s website to
see what’s on offer.
We have also found chicken schnitzel to be quite a popular request, so it’s back on the menu.
FULL wraps ($6.00) have now replaced the previously offered half wraps. These are great value for money!
Chicken Schnitzel Sandwich $4.50 (with lettuce and mayo - $5.00)
Chicken Schnitzel Roll $5.00 (with lettuce and mayo - $5.50)
When placing lunch orders, please use either paper bags or the thermal bags we provide. Please DO NOT use the zip lock
bags!
WATCH THIS SPACE!
At the begininng of Term 3 we hope to implement an “online ordering system” for all lunch orders. This will provide an
easy way to place your children's orders. We believe this will benefit families and also assist in running the Cafe. We would
welcome feedback on this proposal, so please email your thoughts to cafe12@sgcs.nsw.edu.au or give us a call on
Looking forward to serving your children.
VOLUNTEERS
NEEDED FOR
SENIOR SCHOOL
EXAMS
Senior School requires assistance from volunteers who
can read and/or write for students receiving special
examination provisions during exams.
If you are able to help please contact the school
office with your details and Senior School Support will
return your call.
There are already a number of wonderful volunteers
who regularly give their time. However, these
volunteers are not always available for every exam.
A larger register of helpers is required, especially due
to the imminent Higher School Certificate exams.
Information about Special Examination Provisions can
be found on the NSW BOARD OF STUDIES WEBSITE and
from Senior Support.
A Working With Children Check will be required.
Your generous assistance will be very much
appreciated.
A NOTE FROM THE LIBRARY
We were delighted to
see so many parents
new Library facility at
Hurstville Campus on
Open Day.
We are now fully
functional and enjoying
the buzz of students
reading, playing board
games and coming for
research and reading
lessons with their
teachers.
We have a constant flow of new books: Let
me highlight three new series recently added
to the “New Book” shelf:
• In Junior Fiction novels: Jackie French’s
Animal Rescue series. Each book is about
100 pages, in larger print.
• Our Australian Girl, by various authors,
follows the adventures of different girls
at various times in Australia’s history.
• For older readers, a new series by
Christian authors Bodie and Brock
Thoene. Zion Diaries, is set against the
background of Nazi Germany.
What’s Happening to our Boys?
During Week 5, we welcomed Maggie Hamilton to our School to speak about the
challenging topic of raising boys in the 21st century. Maggie is a well known Australian
social commentator on cultural trends.
During her seminar, Maggie presented a very worrying insight into the immense
pressures facing our boys and young men. Pressures from sophisticated marketing
strategies, from new technologies, from a culture soaked in drugs, alcohol and
pornography. This toxic atmosphere, as she describes it, has huge ramifications for
our future society. Despite the grim picture, Maggie presented several strategies for
countering these insidious influences.
For anyone who missed the seminar and is keen to learn more about raising boys,
Maggie’s book “What’s happening to our boys?” is available for loan through the
Parent/Teacher collection at our Library at the Hurstville Campus.
Parent/Teacher Interviews
Parent/Teacher interviews will be held on Wednesday 20 June. Notes will be sent out shortly so parents can
indicate a suitable time to meet with the teacher and discuss their child’s progress. Reports will be sent home
on Friday 15 June.
Uniform
It is good to see all the children in their winter uniforms. Long sleeved PE shirts are working out well for the
colder days when the children are wearing their sports uniform. These are available at the school’s uniform
shop.

Infants
THRASS
Infants raised money on our Open Day and now Years 1 and 2 have their own giant THRASS mat in their
classrooms. We have another to aim for now to go in the Kindergarten room.
Vanuatu
Thank you to those parents who have already contributed goods for our Vanuatu Dinner auction. We are still
happy to receive donations of items for prizes or silent auctions to be held on the night. If you are able to help
please contact Mrs Mawer on 9529 8405.
Chickens
Sadly we say goodbye to our chicks!
Each Kindergarten class has had ten healthy chicks chirping away each day in their classroom. By some
statistical quirk, 5 black and 5 yellow chicks have hatched in each room.
The children held them while they had a photo taken.
Our Excursion to Calmsley Hill Farm
Year 1 children visited Calmsley Hill City Farm. Here are some of their recounts of the day
The other week,
Year 1 went to
Calmsley Hill Farm.
When we got there,
we had recess, then
we had a tractor
ride. I liked going
up and down. We
patted the animals
and they were soft. Then we
went to milk a cow. After lunch
we saw whip cracking. It was
loud! Then we saw Marly round
up sheep. Last we saw sheep
shearing. I really enjoyed the
farm. Luke Laurikainen
I went on a bus to the farm.
First we had recess. After, we
saw the farmers and a rabbit
and some sheep. Then we
milked a cow and had lunch.
After lunch we watched the
whip show and the sheep dog
show. Then we saw the sheep
being sheared. I had a good
day! Dimitri Augerinos
Year 1 went
to the farm.
When we got
there we ate
some food
and went on
a tractor ride
and it was fun. The tractor
ride was fast. Then we got
to pat some animals and
some of them were soft. We
also got to milk a cow, which
was fun. After lunch we saw
three shows which were whip
cracking, a sheep dog show
and shearing of a sheep. I
liked the farm. Jeremy Ko
Year 1 went on a bus to go to the farm. First we had recess and then we saw a kitten and some chicks, goats and
sheep. Then we saw a cow and some pigs. I like the tractor ride the best. We had lunch and then we saw the
whip cracking show and Marly the dog rounded up sheep. The lady sheared a sheep for us. That was the best
day ever. Rachel Clayton

NSW/ACT STATE SKIPPING CHAMPIONSHIPS
26-27 May - Ryde YMCA -
This year’s competition was bigger and tougher than last
year. SGCS was the largest team there with twenty students
from Middle School, two from Senior School and twenty from
Junior School. It was a great experience to see all the skippers
from NSW and the ACT meet and share their skipping skills.
We also got to see the top Australian skippers and a World
Champion showed us their skipping routines which were just
amazing. Our team received a lot of positive comments
regarding our smiles and passion for skipping.
I would like to say a big thank you to:
• Mrs Kosteski, Mrs Norman, Mrs Clark, Mrs Douglas,
• Mrs Madden and Mr Payne for their time and effort
organising our new team shirts, fundraising and providing
lights to practice in the dark.
• To parents for their support and encouragement.
• To Miss Henderson and Mrs Allum and the other teachers
for their help with supervision and encouragement.
This wouldn't have been possible without Mrs Binns who
facilitated practices every time we asked and organised
absolutely everything from costumes to rope malfunctions.
We certainly looked better this year in our sparkly outfits.
In the middle of what is a particularly busy time of year, we celebrated with Mrs Kidd the imminent arrival of her baby and
welcomed Mrs Harrington to 6K. A transition period allowed students in Year 6 to ease into this change of staff with confidence
and renewed expectations for their learning for the remainder of Year 6. We are thankful that Mrs Harrington has joined our
team. She brings with her a wealth of expertise and extensive experience in working with students and mentoring staff. The
overnight excursion to Canberra planned for Week 7, has meant that students and staff are actively focused on ensuring they
are well prepared to take advantage of the hands-on learning opportunities that await them. The students will participate
in a variety of educational programmes focused on Australia’s history, culture, heritage and democracy. To assist parents
in meeting the cost of the excursion the Australian Government is contributing funding under the Parliament and Civics
Education Rebate (PACER) programme toward the travel expenses incurred. This contribution of $20.00 per student will be
paid directly to the school. We would like to acknowledge the Australian Government for their support of this program, and
feel that the excursion will be a rewarding experience for all students.
I want to commend all of our students for their diligence, focus and persistence during this demanding time of examinations
and assessments. The staff have noted with delight, good time management being practised, students revising with one
another during breaks and others taking ownership of their learning by seeking additional assistance at lunch or before or after
school. As usual, the amazing Mrs Allum has conducted 'blitz' type Mathematics sessions for students who were keen for more
opportunities to hone their skills before school. These were indeed well attended and this added ammunition to
Mrs Allum's bold declaration that Mathematics is more important than English! Mrs Allum was well challenged by the rest of the
staff at a recent Middle School Assembly! She remains unconvinced.
It has also been encouraging to see our students take full advantage of the new library facilities which can be so easily
accessed from the Middle School bridge, at our doorstep. At lunch, with a MS Home Room Teacher and a Leader, students
are visiting the Bay Room to read, to play Scrabble, Chess or Cathedral and to work at the computers. The inviting furniture,
the bright colours and the tree tops view have ensured a lovely ambience and a much sought after space.
Year 8 students have relished the recent introduction of one-to-one iPads in their Home Rooms. This mobile technology allows
them and teachers to invest more class time analysing, synthesising and evaluating issues and less time gathering information.
Classroom discourse is now much more focused on higher order thinking which is substantially more effective for our students.
The iPads will also be an invaluable tool as Year 8 undertake their major work before graduating from Middle School, their
independent research task on an issue of their choice.
Thank you for your continued expressions of support. We look forward to speaking with you at Parent Teacher Night in the last
week of the term. Details will be sent home shortly regarding these arrangements.
Stitches Girl’s Fellowship Group
If you were to walk past Middle School
on a Friday during lunch, you would
spy a group of creative young girls
(and a few grandmothers!) keeping
an old art form alive. Knitting is back
in vogue! “Stitches” is the Middle
School Girl’s Fellowship Group and
we meet every Friday to learn how
to knit and share in God’s fellowship
with each other. Our current knitting
goal is to make squares which we
will stitch together for baby blankets.
The blankets will go with the Vanuatu
Mission team in July and be given to
the women who live in the mountains.
Although Vanuatu is a warm climate,
children born in the mountains have
very high mortality rates, as the
unpredictable cold weather can bring
on fatal pneumonia.
The Girl’s group is open to all mothers,
aunts and grandmothers who would
like to chat and knit!
We meet from 1 – 1:30pm every Friday,
so dust off your old needles and wool
and come along for ‘Stitches’.
Parents for a Weekend
St George Christian School recently purchased three state of the
art “RealCare Baby” infant simulators which will be used by students
participating in the Year 12 Community and Family Studies course.
During a simulation the “RealCare Baby” cries for care at all hours,
day and night. The caregiver has to figure out what the baby needs:
feeding, burping, rocking or diapering. The caregiver wears a unique
tamper proof wireless ID to ensure accountability and the “RealCare
Baby's” computer tracks its care and safe handling over the weekend.
The detailed data is downloaded after the simulation, including exact
times of missed care and specific mishandling - shaken baby, head
support failure, wrong positioning and rough handling.
Students in the Year 12 CAFS course take the simulator home for the
weekend to complement their learning in the Parenting and Caring unit.
Throughout the weekend, they need to maintain a diary detailing their experiences, including when the baby cries,
how it is soothed and their thoughts and feelings at the time.
On completion of the weekend, the baby is returned and the care data downloaded to give an overview of their
caring performance. When the baby is returned, the students are given reflection questions related to their experience
and areas covered in the course.
So far two students have experienced a weekend as a parent. Their initial thoughts about the experience included:
“It was a good learning experience but I wouldn’t want to do it again, I won’t be having a baby any time soon.”
When they were asked to sum up the weekend in a few words they said:
“Stressful! I had no time for myself, the baby impacts everything, every choice revolves around the child.”
Their final thoughts were:
“I have a new respect for parents, especially sole parents.”
Over the next four weekends, other Year 12 CAFS students will be given the chance to experience what it is really like to
care for a child. Look out for future newsletters to see how other students found the experience.
I would like to thank the school for purchasing these “RealCare Babys”,
they will provide invaluable learning opportunities for our students.
On 28 May, Year 9 and 11 Drama students were given
the opportunity to attend an in-school afternoon
workshop in Commedia dell’Arte.
“Commedia” originated in Italy during the 16th and
17th Centuries and used masks, archetype, acrobatics,
song and dance to tell farcical stories that poked fun at
and relayed gossip about the various strata of society;
kind of like a renaissance “Women’s Weekly”!
Both Year groups have had the chance to explore the
form in class this term and so a professional Commedia
troupe was invited to show the students how this
traditional style can still entertain us today.
The afternoon’s activities were organised by theatre
company, Matriark Art Theatre and gave students
the opportunity to watch a short play performed by a
professional Commedia troupe, ask questions in a Q&A
panel discussion and then learn the skills for themselves
on the floor in small group workshops run by the
performers.
Commedia 2 – Lachlan McWhirter (Year 9) learning to play the
character 'Il Capitano' with tutor Bobby Den Engelsman
from Matriark Art Theatre.
As an intensely physical art form, Commedia dell’Arte
can often be quite a difficult theatre style to master.
However, our talented students jumped right into the
workshops with great energy and could be seen in
spaces across the school jumping, waddling, squawking
and squealing as they tackled the ancient theatre
form.
At the end of the session, students were given the
chance to perform some of the characters and
situations that they’d been exploring, and some really
original and inventive performances were given by
both Year 9 and Year 11.
The workshop and performance were a really
enjoyable and unique experience for all involved.
Thank you Matriark Art Theatre and well done to our
wonderful students!
Commedia 3 – Mr Parker and Matriark Art Theatre answer
questions asked by Year 9 and Year 11 students.
Commedia 1 – Abbey Nicoll, Phoebe Honor and Kelly Chan (Year 9) perform the character of 'The Servant'
with tutor Nicholas O'Regan from Matriark Art Theatre.

As part of the Beyond Ourselves initiative we will be
partnering and sharing this mission experience with a
medical team led by Dr Shan Ong.
This year, as in previous years, SGCS will work with
the Camp Shining Light (CSL) Mission Base located
near Luganville, participate in ministry programs and
provide practical help to local primary and high
schools.
Students will also be given the opportunity to assist
the medical team led by Dr Ong (a school parent)
and provide basic treatment, first aid and hygiene
education for families in the Luganville area.
Vanuatu Mission Trip
2012… Not long now!
It’s hard to believe but in less than two months the SGCS
Vanuatu team will jet off to the island of Espiritu Santo on the
school’s annual ‘Beyond Ourselves’ mission trip.
Preparations are well under way with students and
staff meeting on Monday afternoons to co-ordinate
the drama, music, craft and sport activities, as well as
preparing servant hearts for the mission trip.
This will be the fourth team we have sent over on a short
term mission. This year the team consists of twenty four Year
10 and Year 11 students, seven staff members and various
other members of the SGCS community who are all incredibly
excited about sharing the gospel and lending a helping hand
to the people of Vanuatu.
