A tough charity for a tough world
The last twelve months have been
tough for the Trust. Surpluses from our
social enterprise were lower than
expected and we had to take measures
to reduce the impact on our
performance. However, we were quick
to respond, increasing our fundraising
efforts and, in June 2007, carrying out a
restructuring to trim our costs. As a
result, our financial position remains
robust and we are able to continue our
work uninterrupted.
We have completed a strategic review
which will form the bedrock of our
journey over the next five years.
Personal safety is higher on the nation’s
agenda than ever before and we will
work hard to help a wide range of
groups within the community to feel
safer and more able to deal with
violence and aggression - whether
potential or actual.
Membership of the Board of Trustees
has continued to strengthen and we are
delighted that Aidan Birkett, Andrew
Crawley and Ian Johnston are now with
us. Paul Lamplugh, who has been a
tower of strength for the Trust, retired
as a Trustee this year and, at the same
time, took up an honorary role as
Founding President.
It’s hard to believe it’s four years since
Julie Bentley was appointed as the
Trust’s first Chief Executive, during
which time much was achieved to take
h In September, four supporters – including
our Chairman, Lawrie – raised over £11,000
in the ‘1000 miles in 24 hours’ Harley
motorcycle challenge!
the organisation forward. This year Julie
moved on to be Chief Executive of a
larger charity and from December we
welcomed Steven Gauge, who has
settled in as the Trust’s new Chief
Executive very rapidly.
As ever, the Board and staff continue to
work hard to make the next year
successful and, above all, safe.
Violence and aggression: a social disease
Each year there are around 2.5 million
violent incidents in the UK*. Last year
alone, 757 people were killed**.
Nearly 1 in 28 people every year will be
the victim of violent crime; so, chances
are, at some point in your life you, or
someone you love, will be affected.
We believe more should be done to
tackle the causes and symptoms of this
social disease.
i
Promoting Personal Safety
Suzy Lamplugh Trust is a national
personal safety charity. Personal safety
is an individual’s right to go about their
everyday life free from the threat or fear
of psychological, emotional or physical
harm from others.
Suzy Lamplugh Trust
g makes people aware of their
personal safety
g gives people the skills they need to
keep themselves and others safe
g reduces fear of violence and
aggression to improve people’s
quality of life
Our approach is practical and
positive – life is for living!
some way.
This document looks at our strategic
aims for the past year, and reviews
our progress against them. We aim to
be open and transparent in our
reporting, revealing our failures as
well as our successes.
New Personal Safety Training DVD
Moving on from outdated video
resources, we have created a brand new
DVD resource to be used as a training
aid in workplaces. Personal Safety at
Work: Planning for Safety and Conflict
Management helps people to deal with
issues such as managing aggression and
conflict, stress management, tension
control, strategies for staying safe at
work and handling incidents. So far, over
140 workplaces have benefited from
this new resource and thousands of
employees are now working in safer
environments.
i
Making safety at
work make sense
This year we have created a new, clearer
range of Personal Safety at Work
resources. These cover a wide range of
roles and needs, helping everyone to
lead safer working lives.
i
Helping young runaways stay safe
Young people run away from home for
many different reasons. Whatever the
reason, young runaways are often
vulnerable and alone and can be at
extreme risk of violence and aggression.
This year we worked with the charity
Missing People to put together a leaflet
aimed at young runaways, offering
guidance on how to stay safe and
directing them both to Missing People’s
national service for young runaways and
to our website and phone number for
more information about staying safe.
h Our ‘SAFE’ leaflet helps young runaways to
avoid violence and access help.
Two new personal safety websites!
Our websites are our most important
tools in reaching out to people who
may otherwise not have access to our
personal safety guidance and advice.
This year, we undertook a major review
of our website, resulting in a completely
new site, with clearer content, easier
accessibility, and a new online shop for
people to purchase our personal safety
resources. Alongside this, we have also
launched a brand new youth website,
i
National Personal Safety Day
Every year we host this national
awareness day. This year, on 15th
October, we spread the word about
National Personal Safety Day in
Waterloo Station by handing out over
4,500 free ‘safety pin’ badges along with
our ‘Top 5’ personal safety tips. Schools
and workplaces across the country also
marked the day by doing our ‘Personal
Safety MOT Quiz’ and selling badges to
staff and pupils to raise money.
i
Safety for drivers
Together with the RAC Foundation, we
conducted a survey of motorway users
to establish their perceptions of safety
when using the hard shoulder. We have
since released guidance for drivers,
which we hope will improve their
personal safety when using motorways.
where young people can go for advice
on staying safe. It’s ‘hosted’ by a range
of characters, who take users through
the various sections and explain
different aspects of personal safety.
Workplace personal safety training
This year we delivered personal safety
training to over 21,244 people in
organisations across the UK.
Unfortunately, this is lower than the
estimated 40,000 we reached last year.
Corporate Social Responsibility
We are delighted to be working with
Man Group plc, to deliver personal
safety training and resources to their
staff in the UK and abroad as part of
their Corporate Responsibility
Programme.
However, we suspect this drop in
numbers is due to a change in our data
capture procedures, which are now
more accurate than ever.
In order to allow as many people as
possible to access our guidance, we run
open-access seminars across the
country. In addition, through our Tutor
Training programme, we train and
accredit personal safety tutors, who are
able to cascade their knowledge and
skills to others.
Through this relationship we have been
able to work with hundreds of private
sector employees, to improve their
safety and that of their friends,
colleagues and families.
“The facilitator was so personable and made
the subject interesting, realistic and
completely understandable to relate to your
own life. I would definitely recommend it to
colleagues.” (Man Group plc employee)
h Man Group says: “The initiative has been
driven by the fact this is the right thing to do
and the company values its staff.”
people across the UK
i
Supporting young people in high crime areas
For the second and final year, our pilot
Children and Young People’s Project has
worked with children from the age of
eight in some of the highest crime areas
of London, helping them to avoid
violence and aggression.
We offer them strategies to help them
avoid the dangers they may face, skills to
defuse aggressive situations and ways of
increasing their confidence that don’t
involve carrying weapons. We talk to
them about the reality of violent crime,
and offer positive, practical alternatives.
An evaluation of the pilot revealed that
75% of teachers and youth workers
i
involved said that there had been a
change in the young people’s behaviour
as a result of the sessions.
Personal safety for primary school children
This year we released Teach Safety – a
brand new resource for primary schools.
It comprises teachers’ manuals along
with a CD Rom which can be used in
classrooms with interactive whiteboards
and contains printable learning materials.
The four modules help children from 5 –
11 years to learn how to recognise
danger and teach them skills and
strategies for staying safe.
With funding from npower, Capital 95.8's
Help a London Child and the Doris Field
Charitable Trust, we were able to
distribute 70 Teach Safety packs for free
Empower Project
Older people often have a
disproportionate fear of crime. This can
limit and reduce their quality of life and
breed social isolation.
h Empowering older people to live their lives to
the full.
i
Community Safety
Community safety goes hand in hand
with individual personal safety. Knees
Up is a project run by Quaker Social
Action which aims to bring communities
together using traditional street parties
to break down existing barriers between
neighbours and help local residents get
to know each other.
Following these street parties, we have
been working with residents to help
them further explore what makes them
feel unsafe and how they could avoid
the risks they face. At personal safety
workshops and drop-in advice clinics,
we have been offering tailored guidance
Working alongside Derbyshire County
Council and Help the Aged, we have
been training older people in Derbyshire
as personal safety peer educators.
Following their three day personal
safety training course, 10 volunteers
now have the skills and knowledge they
need to deliver short workshops or
interactive presentations to other older
people in their community. They have
already started delivering sessions,
empowering their peers with the
strategies and confidence they need to
lead full and independent lives free from
fear.
and giving people in these communities
the skills and strategies they need to
stay safe.
h Street parties help to break down barriers and
improve community safety.
Intergenerational Personal Safety Project
This project, piloted this year in
Lewisham, south London, has brought
together people from different
generations to create a safer
community for everyone. By working
with young and older people both
separately and together we were able to
challenge stereotypes and preconceived
notions held by each group about
matters relating to personal safety. We
were also able to tackle the issues
which particularly concerned these
groups, such as anti-social behaviour,
and what to do if you see a crime taking
place. We worked with them to develop
strategies to enable them as individuals
and as a community to stay safe.
h Our intergenerational project helped to
challenge stereotypes and break down
barriers, improving community safety
i Media
This year we have generated
131,585,000 opportunities for people to
see our guidance in the press. This is
lower than the 148,000,000 we reached
last year, which we think is due to a
peak in 2006 as it was our 20th
anniversary year. We are constantly
improving our methods of recording
data such as this: next year we hope to
be even more accurate, as we will be
monitoring coverage of Suzy Lamplugh’s
case separately from coverage of the
Trust and our safety guidance.
h By disseminating personal safety messages
through the media, we can reach large
numbers of people with free advice.
Keeping Administration Costs Down
This year saw the move of our
Resources operation to an external
dispatch company in Penzance. By
outsourcing this function, we have
improved efficiency in our operations
and lowered costs, ensuring a strong
financial position for the future. We still
maintain full control over our products,
quality control and the development of
new and responsive resources.
h Outsourcing our Resources function has
helped to streamline our costs.
Ensuring Suzy Lamplugh Trust continues to be an organisation functioning
and achieving to the highest standards.
i
Supporting our Staff and Volunteers
We are proud to have renewed our
Investors In People status this year. We
are lucky to have a highly professional,
passionate and knowledgeable team in
the National Centre for Personal Safety
and a network of highly experienced
trainers who disseminate our messages.
We believe in developing and
supporting our staff and volunteers to
enable them to
deliver to the very
highest standards.
Why does Suzy Lamplugh Trust sell
some of its services?
Suzy Lamplugh Trust is a charity, with
charitable mission and aims. In order to
help fund some of our charitable work,
h Our social enterprise team are highly
professional, providing top quality services to
organisations across all sectors.
i
How can I be a part of helping
people to stay safe?
g You can make a donation towards
our work, enabling more people to
access our personal safety services.
g Your trust or fund can make a
contribution towards our work or
fund a particular personal safety
project.
g Your company can support us in a
number of ways – perhaps Suzy
Lamplugh Trust could be your
Charity of the Year, or you could
sponsor one of our projects or
services.
g You can take part in a sponsored
event – from bike rides to charity
runs, there is an event for everyone!
we run a social enterprise. This is a
business which sells our personal safety
training and resources to those people
who can afford to pay for them. In
delivering these chargeable services, we
not only raise money to pay for other
projects, but we also meet our
charitable aims through offering
personal safety guidance to people in
the workplace and schools.
The surplus we make from these sales
enables us to provide services free at
the point of contact to the most
vulnerable and disadvantaged members
of the community.
g You can become a Friend of the
Trust, by pledging to make regular
donations: the security of regular
contributions helps us to plan for the
future.
h You can help us to help others avoid
becoming victims.
Reserves Policy and Funding
Charities are required to determine a
reserves policy. This is reviewed by the
Trustees on an annual basis. They
consider it prudent to work towards
establishing an unrestricted cash and
net liquid assets reserve fund to the
value of three months’ running costs.
Running costs are defined as salaries,
premises, insurance and essential
administration. At 30 November 2007
our general funds reserve position was
£93,646 (2006 £51,774), which gave a
shortfall on the reserves target of
£18,839. Trustees aim to achieve this
target within one year.
i
Looking Forward
Our overall strategic aim for
2008 onwards is:
To significantly expand the reach
of our services across the UK and
increase the number of people
accessing the National Centre for
Personal Safety for guidance,
information or referral to other
appropriate agencies.
To help us achieve this aim, in 2008 we
intend to:
i Launch a Children and Young
People’s Project in London
Building on the success of the pilot
project, we want to launch a personal
safety project for children and young
people in twelve of the highest crime
boroughs of the capital.
i Offer a more comprehensive
helpline service
We are often contacted by members of
the public requesting personal safety
advice and support. A dedicated advice
and information worker would give us
the capacity to respond to these
requests more effectively.
h Next year’s aim is to reach more people with
our safety guidance.
i Increase our research capacity
We cannot attempt to reduce violence
and aggression unless we fully
understand the nature and extent of the
problem. We want to strengthen our
ability to conduct research into this
area, to help us offer appropriate
services to help people to stay safe.
i Hold an awareness raising
campaign
In January 2008, a 15 year old girl was
raped after being dragged from a busy
road in Horwich whilst walking home
listening to music on her MP3 player.
This year, for National Personal Safety
Day, we will launch the ‘Safe and Sound’
campaign, to raise awareness of the
personal safety risks associated with
using mobile phones and listening to
mp3 players in public.
Tackling Violence
and Aggression
21 years on from Suzy Lamplugh’s
death, the problem of violence and
aggression in our society has not gone
away. It is more important than ever for
people to develop the personal safety
skills that the Suzy Lamplugh Trust has
championed over the years.
For me it is a great honour and a
privilege to take over the helm of the
trust founded in her memory. My
predecessor, Julie Bentley, has left the
organisation in good shape. Along with
the keys to the National Centre for
Personal Safety in central London, she
handed over a dedicated and talented
team of staff and volunteers.
Violent crime is never out of our
newspapers and broadcast media.
Everyone’s life is in some way affected.
Our role is to provide sensible, practical
advice to help people to stay safe and
live their lives to the full.
Over the coming years, I am determined
to build on the success of the Trust and
to identify new ways of reaching more
people with our messages.
Violence and aggression is a disease in
our society. It kills
over 700 people
every year in this
country and
injures over two
million more.
Just like other
diseases, we
need more
research to
tackle the causes
and treat the
symptoms. The
team here are
bursting with ideas
to help make people
safe. All we need is
your continued
support.
With thanks and best
wishes,
