Welcome to the 13th
Terryglass Arts Festival
This year we have programmed a very exciting and
varied range of arts events which we hope that
everyone will enjoy during the five day festival.
The festival is organised by a small voluntary
committee who work enthusiastically all year round
to make each festival bigger and better and it
has now become a unique experience on the arts
calendar. We would like to thank everybody who
contributed to this year’s programme and in turn we
would ask people to support our sponsors without
whom this event would not take place.
This year we are featuring a Pop Up Marquee where
we will hold numerous events during the festival.
Just like every other year we will be catering for
all ages and interests and one of this years’ highlights
is a Gala concert in the Church with Tommy
Fleming. Please take note that this year we have
on-line booking for all our events, so don’t forget to
book early so that you will not be disappointed.
We look forward to seeing you in Terryglass –
famous Irish Dancers
Bernadette Flynn &
Damien O’Kane.
Aindrias de Staic
Bernadette Flynn started Irish
dancing at the tender age of four in
Nenagh, Co. Tipperary. From age seven she
dominated the world of competitive dancing.
At sixteen her dancing career took off when
she was handpicked to play the role of the
original leading lady in ‘Michael Flatley’s Lord of
the Dance’.
Damien O’Kane started dancing at age nine in
County Derry and also went on to be a great success
in the world of competition. Damien has danced the
lead with Lord of the Dance for thirteen years and
both he and Bernadette have performed Lord of the
Dance to 80 million people in over 60 countries.
Over 15’s – some strong language
and adult themes
We are delighted to present Aindrias
de Staic as one of our main events
this year and to warm him up for
Edinburgh audiences in true
Terryglass style. Fresh from a
sell-out run at the Melbourne
International Comedy Festival,
he leaves for Edinburgh right
after Terryglass so catch him
here first!
What do you get when you
cross an Irishman, a backpack
and a fiddle? Aindrias de Staic.
With his combination of quick
wit, gifted storytelling and a
fierce musical talent, he’s
more than a comedy
cliché. Featuring a cross
between contemporary
Irish story-telling and
variations of world
music (from Irish tunes
to Gypsy, Italian, Greek
and jazz) de Staic also
dashes out lashings of
comedy.
Impressive, when you consider de
Staic blindly stumbled across fame after the juke
box at his local chip shop nestled in Western Ireland
broke down. “I used to sing along and tell jokes in
between, while we waited for it to be repaired. It just
worked.”
THE SUNFLOWER SHOW with Littlebigtop
AND LOTS MORE……
The Sunflower Show is a quirky piece of street theatre
using clowning and suitcase puppetry. A gardener
opens the lid of her wheelbarrow to reveal a world
where seeds grow into the most extraordinary plants
and battle with slugs and other mischievous garden
pests for survival.
Hands on elements actively involve the young audience
… flower pots become stacking cups, have a go at
watering a seed in a pot … will it grow?
Presented by Little Bigtop, a theatre company, newly
based in North Tipperary, making work specifically for
young and pre school children.
Exhibitions
Visual Harmonies is an exhibition which has been curated by The
Terryglass Arts Festival for 2011. This exhibition celebrates painting and
features four Tipperary based women painters Josephine Geaney, Judy
Hamilton, Joyce Soden and Margaret O’Brien. While each artist has a
strongly distinctive visual style, the process of painting, a focused line of enquiry
and a love of texture and colour unpins all of the work much like individual voices
within a choir.
Visual Harmonies runs at Terryglass Village Hall throughout the festival.
Gerardine Wisdom, Rush Sculptures at Terryglass Quay
Gerardine is a local artist who has won numerous awards for her work including first prizes in the RDS
National Crafts Competition 2010 in the ‘Contemporary’ and ‘Rod, Rush & Straw’ sections. Gerardine
works with rushes she picks from the lake, making sculptures with an aquatic theme. Her floating figures
are well known on Lough Derg including The Mermaid, Equus, The Lough Keeper and The Viking. For
2011 Gerardine plans to work in a more figurative vein so watch the quay for the 2011
creations unveiling!
“cutbacks” will run in Paddy’s Bar for the duration of the festival.
“cutbacks” is an animated internet series from award-winning Tipperary-based animator David Quin
featuring a range of prominent Irish characters. Started in September 2009 and produced in HD, these
satirical short animations are witty and entertaining. The ‘cutbacks’ series is updated twice weekly and is
already being broadcast on cable tv in Dublin. www.cutbacks.ie / www.davidquin.ie
