Selsey store to donate up to
£25,000 for local community
The Southern Co-operative store in Selsey has announced the
recipients of its 2013 Community Support Card scheme which will
donate up to £25,000 to two local good causes.
Shoppers at the store are being encouraged to support The
Southern Co-operative’s 2013 campaign to donate up to £25,000
that will be shared equally between Selsey and District Carers
Support Group and Selsey Community Bus. Retail Business
Manager, Marcus Preen, explained: “The Community Support Card
(CSC) scheme doesn’t cost shoppers anything as all money is
donated by The Southern Co-operative but we do need them to
support the fundraising. To do this, shoppers simply need to
request a free green CSC card, which we give out at the store, and
have this swiped each time they shop here. The more the card is
swiped, the quicker the funds are raised, it’s that simple!”
Registered charity, Selsey and District Carers Support Group,
which has around 300 members, aims to support the needs, both
practical and emotional, of all the unpaid carers in the community.
The Group does this through providing information, advice and
support for carers, and organising outings and events which
provide a vital link for carers to meet like-minded people and
improve their quality of life. Selsey Community Bus is a voluntary
group which provides a local bus service, ‘The Shuttle’, to help
those in the community who need help getting around, predominantly
the elderly who find it difficult to walk any distance. The
group plan to use the funds donated by The Southern Co-operative
to maintain the service in the face of increasing running costs.
Marcus added: “We’re calling on the support of local people to back
the 2013 campaign and make it a real success for the two recipient
charities.
We’ll also be holding a free community fun day to launch the
scheme, so do keep an eye on the local press and in store to find
out more about this.
In the meantime, please pop into the store to pick up a free green
CSC card.” The CSC scheme is run in selected TSC stores across
the south and donates tens of thousands of pounds for community
good causes each year. Last year, local charities, Youth Dream and
Selsey Venture Club each received £12,500 from The Southern
Co-operative’s CSC scheme run at the Selsey store.
The Southern Co-operative store is in Selsey High Street. www.
Selsey WW1
Community Project News
A big thank you to those who responded to our plea for information
about the Selsey men who died in WW1. It was lovely to meet you
at the coffee mornings and we appreciate being allowed to copy
your photos and documents for our research.
DATES FOR YOUR DIARY:
Thursday 11th July: The Selsey Society meeting (at 7.30pm in
St Peters Hall, behind the Church, visitors £1.50) will be about the
WW1 project – showing the sort of things we are looking for, what
we have found and what we plan to do with the information we
gather.
Friday 9th, Saturday 10th and Sunday 11th August: We will be
holding an exhibition in the Town Hall as part of the Selsey Festival
– look out for the Festival booklet for more details.
Although our primary goal is to collect photos and information on
the Selsey men who died, we also want to create a list of all Selsey
men who fought in WW1. Between 1914-1917, the Parish Magazine
published lists of Selsey servicemen, but we know these are
not complete - we would welcome your help with this, even if you
can only give us a name. The lists will be available at both events
above.
If you have any information relating to Selsey and WW1 please
contact Marilyn Smith tel: 606540 or email: mazsmith06@gmail.
com, or come to one of our events.
if you would like to advertise in future
The view from here –
championing the voice of older
people in Chichester District
Voluntary Action Arun & Chichester is taking the lead,
on behalf of a group of organisations drawn from
Chichester in Partnership & the Healthy Chichester
Partnership, in pulling together a network of older people to
comment and consult on local issues. Initially they want to hear the
‘Views from here’ about the shared priorities the partners have
identified in relation to older people – have they got it right?
Organisations including Chichester District Council, Public Health,
Sussex Police, Age UK West Sussex, Chichester area MIND and
Carers support are part of the working group and are enthusiastic
about the opportunity to hear directly from older people.
A network has been run successfully before and VAAC are keen for
those who were previously involved to join in, shortly they, together
with a wide range of smaller organisations right across the District
will be receiving a very short questionnaire with a request for their
older members to comment and consider signing up. The view
from here will not necessarily ask people to travel to meetings but
will maintain a network using a variety of means of communication
including e-mail, websites, telephone and the post. Hilary Spencer,
Chief Executive of VAAC reflected ‘ We want to make it as easy as
possible for people to be part of the network and share their
opinions. We are approaching around 300 groups - from specialist
interest clubs to those offering social care support to ask their
members if they would like to take part, or for the group itself to join
and respond collectively. Hopefully this will mean people who have
not had this chance before will sign up.’ To find out more or to
receive a hard copy of the initial survey please ring VAAC on 01243
840305 or e-mail admin@vaac.org.uk, it can also be completed via
a link on the VAAC website www.vaac.org.uk, or downloaded to be
completed.
SELSEY WI
Our May meeting was the Resolutions meeting, but firstly the
business of the day was dealt with. Members were told about a
card received from a lady at the Breast Care Unit at St Richard’s
Hospital who had received one of the cushions made by our
members, and she expressed her gratitude and thanks for the gift.
Joan Wills mentioned that final payment was due for our outing to
Winchester and Jane Austen’s house next month, and President
Shirley Petitt requested that members interested in taking part in
the County Quiz in August should give in their names at tea time.
She also advised members that we are having a stall at Lifeboat
Day on Sunday, 11 August, and requested donations for a Tombola
stall. Shirley then welcomed Judy Wilson, an Area Advisor, who
explained about our resolution ‘The Decline of Our High Street and
Town Centres’. Members then voted on the resolution, together
with a Special Constitution Resolution that was also voted on. Judy
then judged the entries for Part I of the Gardner Cup competition
– a handicraft beginning with the letter ‘Q’. We had some very
imaginative entries, and the winner was President Shirley with an
exquisite hand-made quilt.
After tea Margaret Goodman, one of our members, spoke about
the 4th annual Selsey Open Gardens that she is organising. This
year it takes place on Sunday, 23rd June from 11.00 am – 5.00 pm.
She explained how the gardens were assessed from the ubiquitous
Health & Safety point of view, and how the charities were chosen to
receive the proceeds of the day. Some of our members are
opening their gardens on that day. To round off an excellent
afternoon, Joan Wills set us all thinking again with a quiz about
shops and shopping, including naming different varieties of coffees
available from the chains which are well known in all high streets
nowadays.
Our next meeting is on Wednesday, 12th June 2013, which is our
92nd Birthday meeting. Our speaker is Paul Weakley, who will tell
us about ‘A Tenor’s Worth’. A warm welcome is extended to all
ladies - for more information, please contact Shirley Petitt on
606287, or Diane Sandbrook on 601776.
Our President Stephanie Pudney welcomed members
and one visitor to our meeting held on 2nd May. We were told that
the remaining bric a brac from our Eggstravaganza had been taken
to a Sunday Car Boot and a further £83 had been raised towards
our funds. What was left had been split between the RNLI, the
Venture Club and Brent Lodge and St Wilfrids Hospice Shops in
Selsey. On 18th July we are having a guided walk of Chichester’s
City Walls which will take about an hour and a half. Names were
also taken for the WI Diary for 2014 and the County Quiz Day on
13th August. We are hoping to visit Denman College on 20th
September but are still awaiting costs for the coach. Tables for our
Plonk, Ploughmans and Quiz Evening on 15th August are going
well and tickets will be on sale from 1st June at The Wool Shop on
Selsey High Street. Shirley Brown has agreed to open her garden
as part of Selsey Gardens Open Day on Sunday 23rd June.
Volunteers were asked for to help with refreshments.
Discussions then took place on the resolution ‘The decline of our
High Street and Town Centres’ to go forward to the WI AGM being
held in Cardiff. During the discussions it was mentioned that Selsey
Library are looking for help to deliver books, CDs and DVDs to the
housebound of the district if any member could assist. The vote on
the resolution was passed unanimously.
Our next meeting is on Thursday 6th June. The talk is entitled
‘Down in the woods something stirred’ and is about foraging for
mushrooms. All ladies are welcome to our meetings held at the
Selsey Centre on the first Thursday of the month at 7.30pm and we
look forward to meeting you. For further information telephone
Letter to the Editor
I am a victim of the recent spate of Burglaries in Selsey and, whilst
welcoming the hard work of D.C. Della Squires, would ask your
readers to dial 999 if they see or hear ANYTHING UNTOWARD.
Apparently a neighbour here heard the crash of breaking glass at
4 a.m., turned over, and went back to sleep. As a result of this
inaction, my home was trashed, I lost a lot, and suffered the
trauma. I urge everyone to act, and stop these appalling criminals.
The Police are on our side; are paid by us; and want to hear from
us.
Name and address supplied
Dear Editor,
Please may I thank, through your pages, all the many people who
have shown such sympathy and kindness to me following the
upsetting break-in at my house on the weekend of April 27th 2013.
I am so touched and moved, and it just makes me realise that not
all people are evil and bad (though perhaps too many are..)
I would also like to pay a sincere and public tribute to West Sussex
Police/CID/Forensics who have been absolutely marvellous and
supportive throughout this sad affair - and they have not finished
with it yet ! I had not realised how fortunate we are here.
sincerely
Last month there was an explanation of the “Partnership Funding”
system, which is used to allocate government money towards
coastal defence work.
As explained, some needy projects – particularly erosion protection
schemes – get little or no funding, because there is simply too
much demand for the money available. The repair of the sea wall at
Lifeboat Way unfortunately lies within this category.
Despite this, it looks as if the funding problem for the repair of the
sea wall at Lifeboat Way may be close to a resolution. It appears
the District Council’s strenuous activity in drawing together
potential funders – to repair the main wall and its superstructure - is
coming to a conclusion.
The overall cost of the works remains commercially sensitive until
the work has been put out to tender. Nevertheless, a few details of
the funding package are emerging from documents in the public
domain.
If you expect to have a lower rate of tax next tax year as opposed
In early May the District Council’s Cabinet agreed to recommend to
to this (say because you are retiring), it might be worth moving any Selsey Information Exchange
We are keeping our fingers crossed, that works might be underway
before autumn. Hopefully the funding package will be confirmed
shortly – if so we’ll report it here.
An update on the various Selsey frontages was given at the AGM.
It was reported that residents at West Beach were concerned that
shingle is now moving off their frontage, spilling over the “terminal”
groyne (by the Coastaguard tower) and accumulating in front of
Medmerry Cliffs.
Ideally this will need to be moved back onto the West Beach frontage
(perhaps leaving a small quantity in front of Medmerry Cliffs to
help protect that area). The problem, as ever, could be funding.
This might be the next coastal issue which Selsey has to solve, in
conjunction with the various coastal authorities.
YouTube videos about Selsey’s coastal issues can be found at
SELSEY WRITERS CIRCLE
Fifteen members met on the 7th May to hear a talk about the best
way to write dialogue. The guest speaker was the well known
author Simon Brett who writes crime and humorous stories as well
as producing radio plays. From his wealth of experience Simon
illustrated the art of writing realistic and convincing dialogue with
many examples, which would help the members with their own
efforts.
The Circle meets on the first Tuesday of every month at the Seal
Dog Grooming Returns to
Bracklesham Bay
We are pleased to report the good news that a dog grooming
parlour will be returning to Bracklesham Bay. As many of you will
know we used to have a groomers in Bracklesham a few years ago
that moved to East Wittering and then changed hands. It's a joy to
hear that local business women and former award winning dog
groomer Carley Bowles has decided to expand her current
business Bracklesham Pet Supplies to include dog grooming within
the next three weeks. Many of you will already know Carley from
her former grooming shop in East Wittering.
Carley has been keeping herself busy concentrating on building up
her pet supplies business and looking after her nan, who had a
stroke just over a year ago, and moving to Selsey. Now that things
have settled down and the pet supplies business is getting
established she feels this is a good time to expand. Having given
into pressure from all her old customers over the years she has
decided to pick up her scissors again and will be joined by her new
assistant. Carley says she is excited to be able to offer her skills
once again and has stressed that she will definitely be offering OAP
discounts as before along with other promotions and offers to all
her grooming and pet supplies customers.
Tackling Ticks
Tick season has already begun with the
weather becoming warmer into summer
your pets may be at risk from these little
pests.
Ticks are small arachnids which will
attach themselves to a warm blooded
body to use as a host for feeding, they bite into the skin and bury
their heads under the surface and release saliva which anti coagulates
the blood for the feed. Ticks can usually be found on wild
birds, foxes, deer and hedgehogs and sheep, there are more hot
spots areas especially around wooded areas and long grass. They
are commonly felt by owners through their pets coats or are seen if
areas such as ears and head.
These parasites can cause tick borne diseases from – Lyme
disease, Ehrlichiosis and Babesiosis which if left untreated and can
cause serious affects on our pet, we advise you should use a tick
prevention treatment through the warmer months or if you live near
wooded areas. There are a few options of treatment you can speak
to our staff to discuss options.
There is also a tick remover which can be purchased from your
local vets or pet shop which will safely remove the head without
damaging your pet, be aware that if you try to remove the ticks by
yourself you do risk leaving the ticks head under the surface of the
skin which will cause an infection and may need treatment by the
vet.
To prevent the entry of non- endemic ticks, mandatory treatment
with an acaricide is required under the Pets Travel scheme for
dogs and cats returning from overseas.
We offer nurses clinics from Monday – Friday 12 – 4 were our
nurses will remove ticks and discuss prevention treatment.
If you have any concerns or queries please come and speak to our
team at Selsey – Ryan Mariner, Practice nurse.
SELSEY "DROP IN"
MIND CHARITY SOCIAL GROUP 219830
Dear all, welcome and a big hello to you fellow friends and friends
not met yet, Mays "Drop In" went very well, and was well attended,
a big THANK YOU to them, see you at Junes event.
When I was first diagnosed with depression and autism my parents
encouraged me to hide it, a common reaction in some families as
the there's a lot of stigma and shame to mental illness.
But over time, and through talking about mental health problems,
my mum and dad came to understand that there's nothing to be
ashamed of and their attitudes changed dramatically.
Today they are supportive and understanding, take part in campaigns,
and fund raise for MIND.
Today both mum and dad now volunteer for mental health projects.
Talking about mental health changed my life and helped end the
stigma I was facing from those closest to me.
You don't need to be a expert to talk about it, here are a few tips to
get you started :
Take one step at a time: Mental health is a big topic and it can be
daunting to know where to begin. Visit website for tips.
Be open minded: One persons experience of mental health won't
be the same as another. Listen to their experience and let them
know you're there for them.
Don't just talk about Mental health: Mental health is just one part
of a person and people don't want to be defined by it. Make sure
you continue to talk about the things you've always talked about.
Courage is contagious: Don't be surprised if your honesty encourages
other people to talk about about their own experiences.
Often,once mental health is out in the open, people want to talk.
"DON'T BE AFRAID TO TALK ABOUT MENTAL HEALTH"
Till next month take care. Next meeting is at Selsey Centre in
conference room, Friday 14th June 9am to noon, all are welcome,
we have good cakes, and refreshments and very informative
leaflets with telephone numbers and important contacts.
Donation of £1.00 is requested, (this helps pay for hire of venue) no
profit is made.
You will also see us at many car boots in Selsey and surrounding
areas raising funds, if you see our stall come over and say hello,
this is a registered charity stall and your support is very grateful.
Feel free to contact me either by email or telephone, regarding
"drop in" please note that we are only a support group and cannot
Congratulations!
The nursing team at Seal Medical Group are celebrating after
winning a prestigious award for Outstanding Achievement at the
Sussex wide Proud to Care Nursing Awards.
The team at the practice in Selsey
was nominated a total of 21 times
by different individuals and every
single nurse at the practice was
nominated.
This led the team to be handpicked
by Julia Dutchman-Bailey,
Nurse Director of the Surrey and
Sussex Area Team of NHS
England.
Julia said she was very impressed
by what she heard in the nominations: “The overwhelming themes
from these nominations were all the nurses being helpful, that they
would go that extra mile, offering services to patients even if it
meant they had to stay or rearrange their commitments, and
always had a smile for their patients. Patients said they felt
confident in the care they received and this had a positive impact
on their lives.”
Dr Hilary Platts from Seal Medical Group said: ‘We are so proud of
our nursing team and are thrilled that their dedication and quality of
care has been recognised and acknowledged by our patients. We
are a relatively small practice but extremely busy practice, this
reassurance and acknowledgement by our patients means so
much to us. For everyone at Seal Medical Group it was fantastic
and very well received news. The award has taken pride of place
on reception and further congratulations have been flooding in.’
Seal Medical Group are part of NHS Coastal West Sussex Clinical
Commissioning Group (CCG) – the new organisation made up of
local GP practices which is now responsible for commissioning a
majority of local health services.
Dr Katie Armstrong, Chief Clinical Officer for NHS Coastal West
Sussex CCG, said: “This is fantastic news for the team at Seal
Medical Group. Care and compassion should be at the heart of all
that we do for our patients, their families and loved ones, and it
sounds like the nursing team at Seal really are getting this right. We
all know that the way our patients receive their care is just as
important as the actual treatment, and so I congratulate all of the
nurses at Seal for all of the hard work they are doing to put their
patients first.”
Seal Medical Group was presented with their award as part of the
countywide Sussex Proud to Care Nursing Awards.
In addition to the Outstanding Achievement award, there were
individual and team awards for the best care delivered in hospitals,
the community, primary care and nursing homes (see below for the
full list of winners and runners-up). There were six categories
recognising the 6C’s - Compassion, Communication, Care,
Courage, Competence and Commitment (see notes to editors).
The awards were given out at the American Express Community
Stadium, Brighton on Thursday, 25th April 2013.
A portrait of one of the many visitors who, on a very cold Saturday
morning, came to Crablands for an Open Day held by the Green
Bowls and Short Mat Bowls sections: following a good time on the
green visitors were pleased
to warm up with tea and
nibbles in the club room
before trying the Short Mat
format in the sports hall:
many members of the club
were on hand to help with
coaching and to answer
any questions . It was an
enjoyable time for visitors and members alike. Anyone unable to
attend the May date and who would like to come and try their hand
at green or short mat bowls please contact Jim on 606172. There
will also be another Open Day at Crablands during the Selsey
Festivities where you will be able to try both formats of bowls and
also tennis – look out for the Festival Programme.
On the tennis front and despite the patchy weather the Summer
league matches are under way – a hardy bunch of boys and girls
– who will play their socks off even if the sun is reluctant to shine to
keep their feet warm!! A reminder to other tennis members – and
would be members – a coach is in attendance every other
to see them on our courts and there is a choice of either allweather
The Selsey Golf Course was in great
condition, thanks to the hard work of
the grounds men after the appalling
weather of the last few months, and the
vibrant yellow of the gorse bushes in
full bloom looked splendid in the
sunshine. The Ladies section joined
together with the Vets section on 3rd
May to play the annual Mixed Winter
Greensomes competition. A good day
was had by all who took part and the
competition was won by Mr. Brian
Chamberlain and Mrs. Rita Green.
Mrs. Barbara Winter (Ladies Handicap
and Competitions Secretary) and Mr.
Graham Watson (Vets Captain) organised
the event and presented the
prizes of 12 golf balls each to the
winning pair.
The Ladies have played several competitions
recently. The Lifeboat Shield,
an annual competition where each
player makes a donation to the RNLI,
was won by Mrs. Sue Blyth. The
Centenary Foursomes another yearly
competition was won by Mrs. Doreen
Scragg and Mrs. Judy Sharpe and the Queens Diamond Jubilee
Trophy, which was played for the first time last year in honour of the
60thAnniversary was played again this year on 10th May on an
extremely windy day and was won by Mrs. Sharon Williams.
Since Cameron and the rest of the
Westminster gravy train are still not
listening, it’s time to shout a bit
LOUDER!
says Louise Addams
It was interesting to watch David Cameron, Prime Minister, leader
of the Tory Party - speaking after the May Elections. “We’re
listening,” he said, “the electorate has spoken and we’ve heard
what they” – that’s you and me – “have said.” Then he proceeded
to tell you and me that what we need is more of what we’ve been
getting. Then, to my astonishment, Ed Miliband and Nick Clegg
said much the same.
Well, I for one don’t want more of what we’ve been getting,
because I didn’t want much of it in the first place. So it’s clearly
time to shout a bit louder.
I’ve been voting for half a century and during that time those
elected to govern a Britain that could still be great have mainly
been either Tory or Labour and apart from spells when our leaders
were Churchill, Attlee and Thatcher, I’ve been largely discontented.
I now ask traditional Labour and Tory supporters two simple
questions: were you happy with how your politicians governed the
country? Did they actually do, what you elected them to do?
Many of you answered at the ballot box when you expressed
massive discontent. I voted UKIP for the first time and Bernard
Smith is now one of ten brand new UKIP West Sussex County
Councillors – hopefully enough to make a difference.
Our next chance to express massive dissatisfaction is when MEPs
are elected and I’ve no doubt there will be a significant shift to UKIP
again.
Most of the electorate are fed up that we can’t return criminals and
terrorists to their own countries because their Human Rights might
be at risk. We are disenchanted that we’ve handed over too much
sovereignty to Brussels and that our politicians seem unwilling, or
unable, to take it back. We want the borders of our own United
Kingdom controlled.
We also want our MPs to spend their time on things that matter –
and not to fool around with things that don’t – like gay marriage.
I have a great admiration for Andrew Tyrie who is an excellent local
MP but I shall be emailing him – tyriea@parliament.uk - to say that
I shall be voting UKIP in the MEPs election and if the Tories still will
not listen, I’ll be voting UKIP at the General Election.
I shall also be writing directly to the Prime Minister - The Rt Hon
David Cameron MP, Prime Minister, 10 Downing Street, London,
SW1A 2AA. One letter will not make much difference, but if many
of us write, it will.
Finally, I’ve just had a mischievous thought: if many of us vote UKIP
at the next generalelection we could get a coalition between UKIP
and one of the main parties which might create a government that
gives the people what they actually want – removal of their country
from the avaricious clutches of the Brussels mandarins - and that
means an EU in/out referendum.
It is said that mighty oaks from little acorns grow and although we
have come a long way since our first meeting at the end of 2012,
there are still groups being established and we are always ready to
welcome prospective members. Don't forget you can come to a
maximum of three meetings before you have to enrol. Although we
hope you make the decision before then. Our monthly open meeting
is held on the fourth Friday at 2pm, currently in the Town Hall
although we will be moving to The Selsey Centre. These meetings
have a short business element, followed by a speaker on a variety
of subjects, a social time devoted to tea/coffee, a quiz, raffle and
natter. Around the town, on various days , groups meet to follow
their interests. The Theatre and Cinema group have already
booked tickets for War Horse next March. The Medieval History
Group are combining their meetings with a series of visits to local
churches and, in September, a visist to the Weald and Downland
Museum. There are board games, music appreciation groups, a
lunch group, and even story telling.
I will not list all groups because we want you to come and find out
the details for yourself. To complete the information, in May, we
welcomed to the open meeting Pam Jones, a member of the Board
of Trustees, who presented us with a certificate welcoming us to
Suggestions on a Postcard Please!
These were the last words of my article in May’s Selsey Life. I got
one! Mr David Kennedy telephoned to tell me there were Selsey
Water Company stop-cock covers in Hillfield Road so why didn’t I
write about the Selsey Water Company.
This one is at the entrance to Medmerry Primary School Car Park.
For those of you own or have read that splendid volume called
‘Putty Medals and Heroes’ documenting the History of the Selsey
Fire Brigade, (now available from me at a reduced price of £7),
some of this will be familiar reading. However, I own another tome
entitled ‘Portsmouth Water 1857 – 2007 150 Years of Service’
which adds more information to what we already know.
This book tells us that ‘Prior to 1907, water supplies in the Selsey
area had been obtained from local springs and wells. Indeed, older
maps of the area show wells located alongside roads and tracks.
On 13 December 1906, the WEST SUSSEX GAZETTE printed the
following article:
COUNCIL BUSINESS: A SELSEY WATER BILL
‘An interesting item appears on the Council agenda for Friday. For
several weeks there has been talk of a Bill to be promoted in
Parliament to seek powers for an independent water supply for
Selsey and various neighbouring parishes. One or two people,
including the officials of the Corporation, who made it their
business to find out, succeeded in obtaining a peep at the text of
the proposed Bill, which has, however, not yet been advertised
through the district. At a meeting of the General Purpose
Committee the other day, a letter was read from the promoters’
Parliamentary agents, giving notice of the intended application to
Parliament in the ensuing session for powers for a company to
supply water to Selsey and seven other neighbouring parishes, all
within the Corporation’s present area of supply under their Act, and
to repeal the Corporation’s Water Act so far as it refers to these
parishes. (The proposed Bill also seeks other powers in regard to
gas, and other matters not affecting the Corporation). The
Committee recommend the Council to take the opinion of an
Engineer on the matter.’
Portsmouth Water (hereinafter referred to as PW) says that the
‘original Directors of the Selsey Water Company were also
Directors of the Petersfield & Selsey Gas Company…as a result
the Water Company was operated in conjunction with the Gas
Company…with one local Manager for the two undertakings’.
‘The Selsey Water Act, passed in 1907, authorised the formation of
the Selsey Water Company to take a bulk supply of water from
Chichester Corporation’.
On 19 December 1908, the Waterworks in Cross Road (now School
Lane) was opened. The mains pipe from Chichester was connected
and a jet 60 feet high was obtained at the junction of Station
Road (now Church Road) and High Street. The Chichester
Observer of the 23rd of December 1908 reported:
‘The weather was appalling: ‘Water, water, everywhere. Roads
ankle deep in mud and water, rain falling in miserable drizzle and a
breeze coming from the sea and the enveloping mist sent a chill to
the very marrow...’ and the dignitaries, including the Mayor of
Chichester Alderman Holt and Mr Edward Heron-Allen plodded
through the mud to the Station Hotel for ‘refreshments’.
Reports indicated these ’refreshments’ included quantities of food
and liquor as well as speechmaking and singing.
Hydrants were, of course, an essential part of the water system but
even these caused problems. Between 1908 and 1922 many were
installed although they were apt to be turfed over, tarred over or
otherwise ‘mislaid’ at regular intervals.
Originally the only roads to have piped water (in 7½ miles of 5” cast
iron pipes) were Hillfield Road, East Street and West Street.
Residents whose properties were not within range of a hydrant
were advised to make their own arrangements to have a hydrant
installed in case of fire! A water tower was planned as a reserve.
PW informs us that ‘The initial rate at which consumers connected
their properties to the mains is recorded in press reports of the
time. From a total of 94 properties connected in 1909, it quickly
rose to 394 by 1913’.
So, not only would Selsey residents have a plentiful supply of piped
water courtesy of The Chichester Corporation without the
inconvenience of toting it from the nearest well but also better
sanitation. Prior to the introduction of piped water the Selsey
Parish Council Minutes are full of complaints about obnoxious
smells emerging from various parts of the village.
‘In 1915 a reinforced concrete water tower of 50,000 gallons
capacity was constructed in Cross Road by F Moehl Ltd of London,
at a cost of £532. The top water level was 82 feet above Ordnance
Datum and the highest point supplied at the time was 30 feet above
Ordnance Datum’.
on 3 March 1926 at which the Selsey Water Order 1926 was issued
which increased the rate by 331/3% to 2s. 8d per thousand gallons.
More vociferous protests were raised by the Parish Council and
there was a ‘pointed exchange of letters in a local newspaper
between Edward Heron-Allen, Chairman of Selsey Water
Company, and Samuel Day, Chairman of Selsey Parish Council’.
This unsatisfactory situation rumbled on with our first hosepipe ban
in July 1928 and another in 1929 when the ‘Increase in Rateable
Values in Selsey led to further rises in water charges’.
The new Selsey Water Act in 1930 aimed to improve the local
supply and here are the men who dug the new mains:
McGarry and Jack Lee
(Photo courtesy of May Swanson, née Cole)
‘For almost its entire existence, the Selsey Water Company was
run as part of the operations of the Petersfield & Selsey Gas
Company. In 1930, the Company’s office was at 163 High Street,
the premises now being occupied by Den’s Fish Bar. In later years,
its office was located at 26 Hillfield Road, Selsey. Heron-Allen was
a Director from 1911 to 1942 and, for most of that period, he was
Chairman.
From 1909 to 1963 (when Portsmouth Water took over the
Company), the role of Secretary was filled by a firm of chartered
accountants in London (Painter, Mayne & Walker, 103 Cannon
Street, London EC4).
Clem Rose (Walter Clement Rose (1902 – 1961)) worked for the
Selsey Water Company from 1926 until 1957 and here he is in the
Selsey Gas and Water Company Office when he was the local
Manager.
Mike Hedges of Portsmouth Water and I interviewed Hazel about
her father and he kindly supplied the Selsey Society with a copy.
Sadly, however, it is too long to reproduce here.
In July 1932 Heron-Allen fielded yet another complaint about water
pressure at the Selsey Parish Council Meeting in July by saying
that ‘if (the residents) arranged to have their fires early in the
morning, he would guarantee all the pressure they wanted, but if
they were foolish enough to have them in the afternoon or evening,
when 150 young ladies had had 150 baths, the pressure would be
very unreliable!’
There was another drought in 1934 and more water restrictions
were imposed on Selsey with even the owners of private wells
being told to boil their water as water levels were low and contamination
was likely.
Selsey continued to be dissatisfied with its Water Company. In
1936, the Parish Council passed a resolution to request Chichester
RDC to ‘promote a Parliamentary Bill to acquire Selsey Water
Company in the interests of ratepayers’. In 1937 the RDC was sent
a complaint about water charges but nothing happened. In June
1937 they had considered replacing the 30-year old meter in
Stockbridge Road but in September of that year the Selsey
Company agreed ‘to provide a replacement 6-inch meter at its own
expense’.
This is a rate demand from 1943
from Miss Wyatt (her name was
Lucy Hannah) and she was the
topic of a series of articles in
Selsey Life). The address is handwritten
by Clem’s wife, Dorothy.
The Gas Industry was nationalised
in 1949 so Selsey Water Company
was then run by the Southern Gas
Board. As late as 1955, Selsey
Water Company had difficulty
maintaining water supplies due to
insufficient pressure.
On 1 January 1957 the association
between the gas and water
services in Selsey ended after 50
years and in October 1963 Selsey
Water Company ceased to exist
(but not before it imposed another
hosepipe ban in August of that
year caused by the large influx of holidaymakers!)
Portsmouth and Gosport Water Company took over Selsey Water.
Freddy Dawkins was the local Manager at the time operating from
his house ‘South View’, 5 Croft Way, Selsey. He, Bill Gasson,
Reggie Lee and Peter Newlen, the other employees, were
transferred to PGWC.
This is, of necessity, a whistle stop tour of the subject and I have
borrowed heavily from Portsmouth Water’s book. If you have
enjoyed it, may I suggest you consider a donation to Water Aid, a
charity supported by Portsmouth Water.
Acknowledgements are due to May Swanson, the family of Hazel
Ousley and Rod Porteous of Portsmouth Water for giving
permission to reproduce family photos and to quote from PW’s
book respectively.
Here it is in 1977. It was demolished in 1984.
However, not everything in the garden was lovely! Selsey rapidly
developed as a holiday resort in the 1920s and, consequently, new
water mains and more water were required. The Company
Keep the suggestions coming in!
responded by increasing charges and reducing the water supply as
demand increased. Residents were not happy! The objections
made by the Selsey Parish Council to the Minister were sufficiently
If you’ve walked around the Bill recently you may well have come
across a group of warmly dressed people with telescopes and
tripods gazing intently out to sea. People often ask what we’re
looking at as it appears to be just a vast expanse of sea, but a
telescope reveals a small window on bird migration, we witness a
few moments of the incredibly long and often dangerous journeys
birds make every six months to and from their breeding grounds. It
isn’t just birds we see off Selsey either, we spot the occasional
dolphin offshore and in rough seas it’s always a joy to watch a grey
seal popping its head above the surf.
The sea-watchers have been coming here since 1959, we’re a
group of independent birdwatchers who collect records between 1
March and 31 May of spring migration, doing the same in autumn.
These records go the Recorder of the group who passes them to
the British Trust for Ornithology, they use the data to track migration
patterns, bird distribution, etc. We watch from three different areas
of the Bill, depending on the wind direction and there is no set time
for watching but early morning generally sees more activity, some
managing a 5.30am start, others putting in a few hours in the
evening after work.
We see a good variety of birds, many of them breed in distant
countries so unless we are lucky enough to travel ourselves, seawatching
is the only opportunity of seeing them. Some birds, like
the great skuas, are just passing through on their long journey
whilst others, like swallows, come inland to breed. It can be quite
something when you have a little black dot flying toward you, follow
it with the ‘scope to watch it gradually getting bigger until the
swallow swoops in and over your head! Many tiny birds land
initially on the beach. Exhausted and hungry they search for food
amongst the pebbles before taking refuge in whatever greenery
they can find, bushes and trees are extremely important to them as
they’ve travelled thousands of miles and need somewhere to rest
and feed before moving inland. The Bill has lost almost all of its
scrub so the vegetated gardens tended by local householders give
much needed sanctuary.
Next time you look out to sea and think, “Nothing happening, just a
boat on the horizon”, bear in mind there are probably 180 or so
common scoters offshore, a grey seal bobbing about, gannets
feeding, an arctic skua hassling sandwich terns, flocks of waders
heading east, house martins heading inland, goldcrests landing in
the bushes. We’re lucky to have all this avian activity on our
doorstep, the surprising thing is it goes unobserved by so many.
The Manhood Wildlife & Heritage
Group sites in Selsey
It all happened so quickly that, if you are an eye blinker of any
significance, then you would have missed it.
What am I talking about? The weather of course. As I write this
article, our year’s allocation of sunshine, consisting of four beautiful
days, has gone. The weather forecasters are now predicting below
average temperatures and a risk of snow, as the temperatures
begin to drop away sharply yet again.
Oh well. I’m a chap who always works on the theory that his glass
is half full, rather than half empty. I had therefore better get on and
report what has been happening during the past month from around
the sites. Quite a lot, you will be surprised to read.
East Beach Pond: It seems to have been only yesterday since our
pair of resident swans appeared back on the pond from their winter
quarters. Well suddenly, out of the
reeds emerges a very proud mother
swan, followed closely by nine tiny
cygnets, only a day or so old.
Not to be left out, dad brings up the
rear. I’m always amazed that, a
moment after they are born, the little
balls of fluff are busy scratching around
Picture © Steve Williams 2013
Mother Swan checking to ensure that
all nine cygnets are present and
for their own food? Where did we
humans go wrong in our evolutionary
path to where we are now? Totally
dependent on parents or adults from the
time we are born to several years later.
Selsey Common: I can do no better than copy a report from the
Selsey Common Team Leader, Dave Haldane:
To preserve the habitat and its wild flowers work was suspended at
this site during March and April.
The damage caused by the caterpillars of the Brown tail moth in
2012 is highlighted by the amount of dead wood covering the top
layer of much of the sites bramble
thicket.
Although unattractive in the short term,
new growth is forcing its way through
and there is still a chance that we will
yet see a covering of nectar rich
flowers to be followed by the delicious
blackberries.
Earlier work at removing sections of
Picture: © Dave Haldane 2013 bramble to allow better access to the
Bramble defoliated by caterpillars of the site, has provided an added bonus by
Brown tail moth on Selsey Common creating sheltered sun spots. These
dry and warm areas are particularly beneficial to flying insects such
as bees and butterflies that require heat to generate energy.
Already three species of butterflies the Peacock, Small White and
Orange tip have been seen basking on the dry bramble alongside
several species of solitary bees.
The summer visiting Linnets can now be seen among the privet
and resident birds such as House sparrows, Blackbirds, Dunnock
and Chaffinches have been busy gathering nesting material.
Volunteers will resume work here in early June.
Manor Green Park: Much to my surprise, the hedges around the
site are beginning to recover. Previously I had expressed my
horror that some of the trees, but mostly the hedges, had been
subject to the vicious flailing method of control. At last, the pond in
the middle of the site - a consequence of the periods of heavy
winter rain - has begun to recede.
The Sensory Gardens: The hard work undertaken by our happy
band of volunteers has paid off. All the bushes and trees have
been carefully cut back to encourage new growth. Weeding the
beds is almost a year-round occupation.
But the majority of the larger
weeds and clumps of grass have been
eradicated. The gardens are ready to
welcome the spring flowers as they
shake off the battering they received
during the winter months.
on digging out the grass and Picture © Steve Williams 2013
persistent strong weeds that try to take Peacock butterfly enjoying the early
Given that the trees are only in their
infancy it is essential to keep them well supplied with water. If left
unattended, the grass and weeds will suck all the moisture out of
the ground around the trees. We only found one of the apple trees
had not survived the winter. This was encouraging bearing in mind
the harsh weather we recently experienced. Especially as the
orchard is in quite an exposed corner of the park.
Recruitment: Could you spare a couple of hours a week to join our
happy band of pilgrims? Extra hands will mean that each site can
be made even more attractive. Why not come along to one of our
Tuesday work parties starting 2 pm at East Beach Pond to meet the
team?
Tuppenny Rice…
By Hugh Graham
Lyn Reeve was born a century too late. She ought to have lived in
Victorian England when the pace of life had the elegance of a horse
drawn carriage… when nobody rushed about… when we all had
time for a chat … and customers could buy a single egg, one jam
tart and half a pound of rice. Lyn yearns to return to a time when
we all have time for one another which is why she's opened
Tuppenny Rice a shop, located between Rock Shop Newsagents
and Waves Cafe, almost opposite Lloyd's bank in Selsey High
Street.
She’s always got time to her regular customers who pop in for an
egg, half a pound of sugar and the scone kits she sells. Young
mums are also regular customers who turn to Lyn for advice on
how to make their own cakes, and to prepare “cookery kits” for their
daughters to take to school.
Lyn has lived in Selsey for nine years and hails from Bristol where
she was a Licensee.
The economic crisis has helped Lyn because close to pay day
young mothers run short of money and may only want to buy a
single egg, also the situation in which pensioners often find themselves.
“We all have to watch every penny at the moment,” says
Lyn, “So Tuppenny Rice is helping out by allowing folk to buy only
what they actually need.”
Lyn is concentrating on dry foods, and makes up packs for scones,
cakes, and a wide range of pasta dishes all priced between one
and two pounds.
Netty, a Victorian housemaid, wearing a mop cap, has pride of
place in Lyn’s Tuppenny Rice window.
She named the shop after the children’s nursery rhyme…
Half a pound of tuppennyrice,
Half a pound of treacle.
That’s the way the money goes,
Pop! goes the weasel.
Up and down the City road,
In and out the Eagle…
“Did you know,” she told me, “ the words from the rhyme come from
Cockney Rhyming slang - lingua franca of the close London
community - difficult to understand because the second noun is
invariably dropped. Apples and Pears (stairs) becomes just apples.
"Watch your step on the apples," actually means “take care on the
stairs.”
To "Pop" is slang for "Pawn". Weasel comes from "weasel and
stoat" - coat. Even poor people owned a suit, worn as 'Sunday
Best'. When times were hard they’d pawn their coat on Monday
and claim it back before Sunday. Hence "Pop goes the Weasel."
In and out the Eagle refers to a pub located on the corner of City
Road and Shepherdess Walk in Hackney, North London.
We hope Tuppenny Rice at 145 High Street, Selsey and Lyn
continue to prosper.
EXPERT ADVICE ALWAYS
TRAINED STAFF
In the Garden
our monthly guide to gardening - written by Giles Peare award winning broadcaster
June is the month when the countryside is ablaze with the magnificent colour of flowers and lush green leaves. The air is enhanced with
many and varied scents. The aroma of fresh cut hay is one of the most potent. Blue, purple and yellow Iris's are striking on the banks of
streams and rivers. Swallows are now most active flying over our rivers and streams devouring numerous and varied insects. Dragonflies
hover over pools and ponds.
The hedges are now in a state of beauty and fragrance, Hawthorn has been replaced by the flowers on the Dog Rose, the different hues
of which, from a light blush to a deep crimson, form a most elegant variety of colour and scent. Bumble bees, Honey Bees and Butterflies
are having a great time feasting on the nectar in the many and varied flowers. June is the month of the Cuckoo, echoing soft and sweet in
parklands and woodlands.
Keep a look out for the many baby Rabbits and Pheasants that often wander onto the countryside roads and lanes. Lots of baby birds are
being taught to find food for themselves and they have to learn how to fly. Sometimes the mother has to push them out of the nest for their
first flight! Summer solstice is on the way, lets enjoy each day.
Jobs for April
On warmer days move housebound Cacti outdoors to a light but sheltered
position so they can enjoy some fresh air and extra sunlight. Increase
watering to once or twice weekly, especially in small pots. Although Cacti
are desert plants and therefore have the reputation of tolerating drought
the confines of a pot mean that their water needs are considerable during
growth. To encourage the development of flowers feed fortnightly with a
liquid high-potent fertiliser - such as Tomato feed.
This is the time to plant out fragrant sweet peas. Dig plenty waterretentive
organic compost into the planting site. Place frame or wigwam
of canes into position. Plant the sweet peas around the support, spacing
them about 15cm apart. Tie in the shoots to their support with garden
twine spaced evenly. As plants grow, tie in regularly. Water the plants to
settle the soil around their roots. Keep plants well-watered and fed during
the summer. Pick regularly to prolong flowering.
Thin out Apples and Pears. Good pollination can result in a heavy set of
fruit. But the trees cannot support all the fruit, some will naturally fall in
summer but sometimes too many still remain. Heavily laden branches
never produce fruit of a good size. Thin out leaving remaining fruit 7cm
apart. Delaying this process will result in the tree wasting energy to form
too many small fruits.
Late April and not a single bluebell at
Woods Mill; the blackthorn blossom is
just starting to emerge about four weeks
later than usual. The frogs in my garden
were at least a month late in spawning
and in the last few of days I've found a
couple of dead, emaciated adults. No
cuckoo has serenaded my ears, while
just the odd pioneering swallow has
hurried over my head on its journey
north. Some nightingales have arrived
but they are expending more energy
trying to find the depleted food supplies
rather than engage in their glorious
singing competitions. Oh yes, I've still to
see an orange-tip butterfly this year.
Where is spring? It's pretty grim for us Homo sapiens
having such a long, grey, cold winter to endure but
at least we can go home and put the heating on or
get some provisions from the supermarket, but for
much of our wildlife it is literally life or death. Much
has been made in the media over the last couple of
weeks of the impact of the winter on our wildlife and
sorry tales of underweight birds being found dead.
Sussex Wildlife Trust’s WildCall Officer, Jess Price, has
received distressed calls from people who have found
dead frogs and frozen spawn in their gardens. So, summing it
all up 2013 has all been doom and gloom for our wildlife.
Short Term Blip or Long Term Tragedy
Or is it really that bad? Of course the answer is not that straightforward.
Yes some wildlife has really struggled and there have been
many casualties from starvation. Finding a dead barn owl is a
depressing experience and many have been found across the UK
this year. There has been a shortage of their basic food supply -
voles and mice - and snow and flooding has made them even
harder to find. But barn owls have had a few very good years and
after decades of decline their population has increased, partly
because there has been an abundance of voles and mice for them
to eat. At Woods Mill over the last three years, one pair has raised
four chicks each year which is a very good success rate. However,
small mammal populations (their main food source) go in cycles,
so there may be one or two lean years ahead for the owls.
Many plants are flowering much later due
to the cold and wet, and when spring
does finally arrive we may experience a
real rush of colour across the countryside.
A short but spectacular explosion is
what plant experts are predicting. Some
butterfly species need cold winters to
complete their life-cycles. Small tortoiseshells
benefitted from the cold winters of
2010 and 2011 because the prolonged
low temperatures killed off the parasites
that can have a deadly impact on their
numbers.
Species have learned to adapt to fluctuations
in annual weather cycles and losses in
years of famine can be replenished in years of
feast. What they can't cope with is the
wholesale destruction of their habitat and
increasingly the longer term impact of a
change of climate which will be potentially
threatening too much of our wildlife.
One swallow doesn't make a summer and
one cold, wet winter doesn't make a tragedy;
lots of cold wet winters or unpredictable weather
patterns are a different story.
Graham’s Wildlife Wanderings
We Brits. are often described, largely correctly in my opinion, as a
nation of animal lovers. Witness the number of dogs, cats and
other pets in our households, generally loved and well cared-for.
We all know though, that places like Battersea Dogs & Cats Home,
as well as more local facilities, are bursting at the seams with
abandoned animals, so the picture is not all rosy. According to the
RSPCA, demands for their services are becoming overwhelming,
probably, I suspect, as a result of the irresponsible and sometimes
downright cruel actions of the thoughtless and selfish.
So what of our attitudes to wildlife, particularly here in the UK? I
believe that the majority of thinking, reasonable people are
disgusted and horrified at acts of cruelty inflicted on our animals
and birds – many species are already suffering acute decline,
largely because of human actions.
At Brent Lodge, we see the results of the distress caused to our
wildlife mainly caused, in one way or another, by human activity,
whether deliberate or accidental, and we do our best to help where
we can. The number of supporters who came to our ‘Spring into
Life’ event recently is proof-positive that many people do genuinely
care.
So what of those creatures, both domesticated and wild, that
appear to cause ‘problems?’ – I refer to deer, wild-boar, badgers,
occasionally foxes, and cattle with (mercifully infrequent), footand-mouth
disease. The British ‘solution’ to such issues seems to
be to slaughter the ‘offending’ creature, or to put it in more genteel
terms, to cull.
Is it not possible in most circumstances to ‘dart’ animals with some
type of contraceptive which will enable numbers to be reduced
without killing, or is it, as usual, down to economics?
I saw recently in the media that some people living in The Forest of
Dean were advocating a cull of the wild boar there because they
were making a mess of their lawns.. I shake my head, sadly.. The
original boar in that area (an ancient British and European species)
had been hunted until they had disappeared. The forebears of the
animals now there had been released (apparently unofficially, but
that’s not their fault, and they are a native breed anyway) and have
‘gone forth and multiplied’ – so why not control further ‘multiplication’
rather than killing?
Many of us will recall the dreadful pyres of burning cattle corpses in
the West Country some years ago, though the efficacy of vaccination
as a preventative measure against foot-and-mouth disease
appears debatable, owing mainly to the international movement of
carcasses.
The issue of badgers and bovine TB could easily take up two of
these articles, but the same thoughts apply. I was interested to read
that not all dairy/beef farmers are in favour of a cull – some
expressing the view that irresponsible husbandry is a factor in the
spread of bovine TB, that culling would not solve the problem and
might make it worse.
We are supposed to be more intelligent and compassionate than
other species, but I sometimes wonder... what gives us the right to
destroy? Interestingly enough, we are the only species that
deliberately engages in mass-murder in wars and revolutions, and
practises torture... Next month, I want to quote one of my favourite
environmentalist authors, the American, Henry Beston – I hope you
will be interested in what he has to say...
Latest Brent Lodge news
A very big thank you to all our supporters who attended our “Spring
into Life” week-end at the beginning of May. You attended in record
numbers. I hope you’ve enjoyed yourselves and liked the new
format. The raptor display proved very popular. All the Brent Lodge
stalls were well attended and a record amount of money was
collected. We wish to apologise for the traffic problems in Chalk
Lane on Saturday morning. This was caused by a large lorry trying
to get onto the industrial estate. The owners very kindly let us use
the estate for parking on our Open Week-ends on condition we
leave room for lorries to access the farm pack house.
The tiny Badger that arrived on Valentine’s Day weighing only 122
grams has grown into a lovely young badger cub and now weighs
just over 4 kgs. You can see pictures of her and lots of other
patients on our web site at www.brentlodge.org or on our face book
pages www.facebook.com/brent. lodge.wildlife or @brentlodge on
Twitter.
While you are out enjoying your garden this summer you may come
across a small baby bird that has fallen out of it nest. The best thing
to do is to try and find its nest and gently replace it. If this proves
impossible try and put it in the middle of the nearest thick bush or
hedge. Another good place is in a hanging basket. Mum and Dad
won’t be far away and will soon find it
Latest Launch News
10th May - Selsey RNLI volunteer lifeboat crew
launched to assist 60 foot ocean racing yacht.
Selsey RNLI all weather lifeboat Voluntary Worker launched at
7.20am shortly followed by the inshore lifeboat Betty and
Thomas Moore at 7.25am to go to the assistance of the French
Yacht Etoile Australe reported to have gone aground close to
the Looe Channel buoys.
Nothing had been heard from the yacht since issuing their initial
May Day call and concern was growing for the two male crew
members on board.
Approximately 10 minutes after launching, contact was established
with the casualty by Solent Coastguards. The casualty crew
confirmed that they weren’t aground and were unharmed but the
yacht had sustained damage. They gave an updated position which
put them a lot further out to sea. At 7.40am the inshore lifeboat was
returned to station whilst the Voluntary Worker carried on and
eventually at 7.52am rendezvoused with the casualty approximately
6.5 miles southeast of the lifeboat station.
It transpired that the Etoile Australe was a sixty foot ocean racing
yacht and she hadn’t run aground but had encountered a large sea
in the Looe Channel which had swept the deck, tearing away her
sails and ripping fittings out of the deck, disabling her and making
her impossible to steer.
A towline was passed and at 8.01am a course was set for
Portsmouth Harbour. Slow progress at a speed of about 3 knots
was made into a rough sea. At 12.12pm the Voluntary Worker and
Etoile Australe entered Portsmouth Harbour and by 12.51pm the
casualty was safely berthed in Haslar Marina. At 1.08pm Selsey
lifeboat departed Portsmouth Harbour to return to station arriving
back at 2.26pm and was rehoused straight away and made ready
for service once more at 3.00pm.
The ALB Voluntary Worker was crewed by Martin Rudwick
(Coxswain), Dave Lamdin (2nd Coxswain), Mike Pledger
(Mechanic), Max Gilligan, Craig Sergeant, John Reeves and Andy
Lee.
The ILB Betty & Thomas Moore was crewed by Colin Pullenger
(Helmsman), Will Moir, Sam Troughton-Smith and Chris Harvey.
Selsey RNLI coxswain Martin Rudwick said. “The racing yacht
Etoile Australe had a competent crew. The sea state was moderate
to rough with a strong southwesterly force 7 wind, it just goes to
show that no matter how experienced you are or how well you may
plan your journey. You never know when you will need the services
of the RNLI. That’s why the RNLI exists – to help people in
difficulty like this.’
~~~~~~~~
16th May - Selsey RNLI volunteer lifeboat crew
launched to assist 30 foot motor boat with fouled
propeller.
Selsey RNLI inshore lifeboat Betty and Thomas Moore was
24
launched at 3.21pm to go to the assistance of the 30 foot
motor boat Jester with two male persons on board disabled
after fouling its propeller on fishing gear approximately 2
miles southwest of the Selsey Bill.
The ILB arrived on scene at 3.29pm. With the aid of a long handled
cutting tool the offending fishing gear was cut away by the crew by
3.40pm. The lifeboat crew stayed with the casualty until 3.51pm to
carry out checks to ensure that there was no water ingress and that
the Jester was able to carry on its passage unaided.
On leaving the casualty the ILB was asked by Solent Coastguard
to carry out a quick search of the immediate area after a passing
yacht had reported a semi submerged steel container. At 4.09pm
with nothing found the ILB was released to return to station arriving
back at 4.23pm recovering straight away and was ready for service
once more by 5.00pm.
The ILB Betty & Thomas Moore was crewed by Gary Pearce
(Helmsman), Andy Lee and John Reeves.
The wind was southwest 4 with a slight sea and sunny weather.
Another Successful Selsey RNLI
Sponsored Walk
The Annual Selsey RNLI Sponsored Walk took place on Sunday
5th May in some of the most glorious weather of the year so far. It
certainly made a change from the rain experienced last year.
Registration took place at the Inshore Boat House from 8.00am
where the administration team were kept busy from the start. Early
birds were some of the fitter and
more athletic participants, eager
to get an early start on the slightly
shorter than normal route before it
became too warm as they ran the
8 mile circuit. Good thing there
are no hills in Selsey. Well done
to the runners.
The registration team had a
constant stream of walkers until
registration closed at 10.00am, by
which time the early starters were
making their way back to the Boat House. In
total there were just under 120 walkers making
the most of the sunshine and the still air. This
was in-between the drifting fog banks.
All the walkers worked up a good appetite
before their lunch. We had walkers
of all ages from babes in arms
and in carry packs, to some more
senior citizens, with a wide variety
of dogs tagging along. All the dogs
seemed to appreciate their treat
on completion. It’s amazing what a
dog will do for a Bonio biscuit.
The last walkers to finish deserve
a special mention and were Mini
and Micky Mouse AKA( Ottille and
Breeze ) who completed the route in fancy dress. I believe they
walked a little further than most after a minor detour into a muddy
ditch! Well done to you both.
Over £4000 pounds has been pledged which will to go towards
the funding of the replacement Boat House and the new Shannon
Class lifeboat due on site late in 2014.
The event organiser and the Fundraising team would like to thank
all participants for your continued support and we look forward to
seeing you again next year. Hopefully on the more traditional route
subject to completion of the Medmerry works.
RNLI Annual General Meeting.
The Manhood Branch of the RNLI held their AGM at the Chichester
Yacht Club on Wednesday 1st May. There was a good attendance
of supporters and the Chairman Nigel Glennie opened the meeting
with thanks to the Yacht Club for once again allowing us to hold our
meeting in their excellent venue.
The Treasurer then explained the accounts which showed a profit
of £15,268.10.
The Chairman went through the activities of the Branch during the
year and setting out the proposed fundraising events for the
coming year.
Mr. Clive Cochayne, Lifeboat Operations Manager at Selsey
Lifeboat Station and Mr. Nigel Roper ,the former Lifeboat
Operations Manager at Hayling Island each received cheques for
£7,634.05 from the Chairman. They both gave thanks to the
Manhood Branch for the continuous hard work of the Committee
and the generous support from the area.
The President, Mrs. Eve Branson presented Mrs. Margaret
Buckingham with Bronze Badge in acknowledgement and
appreciation by Head Office for all the enormous contribution she
has made over the past years in organizing the house to house,
street and static boxes collections in the area. A huge job to
oversee all her willing helpers in all weathers year after year.
Mr. Clive Cockayne gave an excellent talk on the past and future of
Selsey Lifeboat Station. From the beginning when the boats were
manned by 10 oarsmen, being pushed off the beach to the
Shannon Class Lifeboat being delivered next year – the very latest
modern craft. What a voyage the Lifeboat Station has had.
Absolutely fascinating and so many lives rescued and saved.
The evening ended with supper in the dining room for which again,
many thanks to Chichester Yacht Club.
‘Family Talent Show’ at
Our Lady of Mount Carmel & St Wilfrid's
Church Selsey
On Sunday 21st April St Wilfrids Selsey opened its doors to
welcome the local Community to their ‘Family Talent Show’ This
was the first time such an event had been planned and so it was all
a bit of an unknown quantity and it was unclear how many would
support the enterprise.
After a tentative start in terms of ticket sales and the slow
recruitment of local amateur entertainers the event gathered
momentum in the week before the big day and a last minute
decision to change the venue from the Church Hall to the Church
itself proved to be absolutely correct as over 120 members of the
Church and wider community attended to see 22 acts ranging in
ages from 4 to 84 perform for all.
‘Fernando The Frog’, a Juggler, a Tuba player, a Ukulele trio,
Keyboard players, Folk singers, Guitarists, Acapela singers all kept
the enthusiastic audience entetained and rocking in the aisles,
whilst refreshments including wonderful home-made cakes kept up
the energy levels for all and swelled the coffers
A raffle raised extra funds bringing the total raised for Church
maintenance for the day to £500.
A Church spokesperson said “the
money raised was fantastic but was
never the first priority for us; we wanted
to reach out to the wider Community to
demonstrate that St Wilfrids Church
Selsey is alive and well and has great
facilities for all ages to come along and
enjoy the fun. We will certainly be
doing it again next year and now we
know what a Family Talent Show looks
‘Jennifer Da Silva (10) entertains…’ like we can improve on the ‘prototype’”
