The <strong>Headway</strong> Outpatient <strong>Rehabilitation</strong> <strong>Program</strong> offers treatment for individuals who have had<br />

a brain injury or stroke. <strong>Headway</strong> is located in Billings, Montana and is a part of St. Vincent<br />

Healthcare. We serve patients from eastern Montana, northern Wyoming and the western Dakotas.<br />

Since 1995 <strong>Headway</strong> has been a CARF accredited healthcare leader in eastern Montana by helping<br />

over one-thousand patients.<br />

<strong>Headway</strong> offers speech language and occupational therapy<br />

that can address memory, strategies for new learning, and<br />

better communication. We also offer physical therapy,<br />

counseling, neuropsychological services, recreational<br />

therapy, and care management support.<br />

We treat the whole person by considering physical, spiritual,<br />

emotional health, and vocational needs.<br />

<strong>Headway</strong> is the only “coordinated intensive day<br />

treatment program” in eastern Montana. That means that<br />

helping people with brain injuries is our only focus. The<br />

<strong>Headway</strong> team publishes this yearly “<strong>Report</strong> <strong>Card</strong>” to share<br />

with the community the high - quality of our treatment.<br />

Recreational therapy is used to improve<br />

functional skills to return to previous leisure interests.<br />

<strong>Headway</strong> patients in <strong>2009</strong>:<br />

• Progressed an average of 27.6% with functional memory<br />

• Progressed an average of 28.7% in problem solving ability<br />

• Progressed an average of 27.9% with stair climbing and ambulation<br />

• Progressed an average of 40.9% in advanced activities of daily living<br />

• Awarded <strong>Headway</strong> with an over-all satisfaction score of 4.8 (out of 5.0 possible.)<br />

• Awarded our rehabilitation team a 4.91 out of 5.0 possible for “how well team members met<br />

their needs and expectations” (from 22 surveys taken in <strong>2009</strong>.)<br />

Information about the satisfaction of our patients plays a central role in improving the quality of our<br />

services. The vast majority of our patients feedback shared that they were helped “more than<br />

expected” or that they were “helped a great deal” while in the <strong>Headway</strong> <strong>Program</strong>.


The primary goal of the <strong>Headway</strong> team is that patients make functional, measurable progress.<br />

<strong>Headway</strong> keeps track of functional gains patients make<br />

and have found that 93.5% of our patients (in <strong>2009</strong>)<br />

reached their therapy goals. Our data shows that<br />

patients in <strong>Headway</strong> made an over-all 28.9%<br />

improvement!<br />

Information about <strong>Headway</strong> patients:<br />

• Total served: 85<br />

• Initial evaluations: 74 (48 came for on-going<br />

services.)<br />

• Services offered equally to men and women<br />

(52% vs.48% respectively) <strong>Headway</strong> uses realistic situations to teach patients<br />

• Average age: 41 (14 to 68 years-old)<br />

• Ethnicity: Caucasian: 92.9%<br />

Native-American: 3.5%, Hispanic-American: 1.1%, African-American 1.1%, Asian-American 1.1%<br />

The <strong>Headway</strong> program offers a flexible comprehensive rehabilitation “team approach.”<br />

Our patients’ therapy with <strong>Headway</strong> is tailor-fit to meet rehabilitation goals, schedules are adjusted to<br />

be convenient and maximize long-term medical gains. Therapy can be scheduled one time per week<br />

(if that is all that is needed) to as much as six (6) hours of therapy per day, five days per week. On<br />

average patients get about 9 hours of therapy per week and therapy usually lasts about two months.<br />

The professional team at <strong>Headway</strong> is the only coordinated intensive day-treatment program<br />

for people with acquired brain injuries in eastern Montana<br />
