Educational Journey: One Step at a Time
Military tuition assistance (TA) can help fund education up through the master’s degree level. The
focus of this article is to look at how TA, along with some special programs, can help you with
your journey along the education highway. Let’s look at some of the stops along the way.
The associate degree is a two-year degree awarded after completion of a defined plan of study
composed of approximately 60 semester hours of credit. The Associate of Applied Science degree
awarded by the Community College of the Air Force is such a degree. CCAF students, unlike their
pure civilian counter-parts, average more than 10 years to complete this degree. The AF would
like to see this number drop to six years and one means of helping to do this was the
introduction of the GEM program. GEM stands for general education mobile and is a partnership
between civilian academic institutions and CCAF to offer courses online that will satisfy the 15
general education requirements for the CCAF degree. This program eases the course selection
process and registration via single-point access on the Air Force Virtual Education Center (AFVEC).
An associate degree is not required in order to go to the next level—the baccalaureate degree—
and the baccalaureate degree does not have to be in the same subject as the associate degree.
However, building off of the foundation laid by the associate degree will get you to the
baccalaureate degree at a faster pace. This is the idea of another special program known as
AU-ABC which stands for Air University (AU), Associate to Baccalaureate Cooperative. In this
program, civilian institutions of higher learning are partnering with AU to provide Air Force
students with a clear path to the baccalaureate degree. There are two AU-ABC program
categories. Cat 1 is designed for Airmen who have completed their CCAF degree. Schools
participating in this program guarantee CCAF graduates that no more than 60 semester hours
of additional credit will be required to earn a bachelor’s degree. Cat 2 is designed for Airmen
who are currently enrolled in CCAF. Partnering schools will assist students in identifying specific
prerequisite courses that satisfy either CCAF general education requirements or program electives
which will, at the same time, satisfy bachelor’s degree requirements. Once CCAF requirements
have been met, the institution guarantees no more than 60 semester hours would be required to
complete the degree.
There is an exception however as world events have generated a huge need for language and
area specialists. TA is there to help as long as you find an accredited degree program. The
choice of programs is up to you.
Airmen who entered the AF with a master’s, earned one while on active duty, or have a
professional degree, are not eligible to use TA to earn a master’s degree regardless of who paid
for the first master’s. An exception to this policy exists as a result of world events. The Air Force
has a huge need for language and area specialists. There is a unique opportunity to have the AF
pay for a second master’s degree through the International Affairs Specialist (IAS) program. The
actual web link is quite long so enter the AF Portal and type in “IAS Program” in the search box
and hit enter. The IAS Program should come up as the #2 on the search results list. The link will
provide you with all the details on the IAS program and how to apply. If you have questions on
this or any of the other programs in this article contact the education center at DSN 782-5148.
