BS EN ISO 9185:2007 Protective clothing. Assessment 

of resistance of materials to molten metal splash 

BS EN ISO 9185 specifies a method for assessing the heat 

penetration resistance of materials intended for use in clothing 

to protect against large splashes of molten metal. It provides 

specific procedures for assessing the effects of splashes of 

molten aluminium, molten cryolite, molten copper, molten iron 

and molten mild steel. 

The principle of the test method is applicable to a wider range 

of hot molten materials than those for which specific procedures 

are set out, provided that appropriate measures are applied to 

protect the test operator. It is important to note that good 

resistance of a material to a pure molten metal does not 

guarantee a good performance against any slag that can 

be present in a manufacturing process.

BS EN 1149-5 is part of a series of standards for test methods 

and requirements for electrostatic properties of protective 

clothing.

electrostatic dissipative protective clothing. It covers clothing

of burn injury using an instrumented manikin 

BS ISO 13506 provides the general principles of a test method 

for evaluating the performance of complete garments or 

protective clothing ensembles in a flash fire or other short 

duration exposures. This test method characterizes the thermal 

protection provided by garments, based on the measurement 

of heat transfer to a full-size manikin exposed to a laboratory 

simulation of a fire with controlled heat flux density, duration 

and flame distribution. The heat transfer measurements can also 

be used to calculate the predicted skin burn injury resulting from 

the exposure. In addition, observations are recorded on the 

overall behaviour of the test specimen during and after the 

exposure.

BS EN ISO 14116 specifies the performance requirements for the

clothing burning and therefore avoiding a hazard. Additional

BS EN 15614:2007 Protective clothing for firefighters. 

Laboratory test methods and performance

BS EN 15614 specifies methods of test and minimum 

performance requirements for protective clothing, designed 

to protect the wearer's body, except the head, hands and feet,

BS 8469 specifies requirements and test methods for the

Specification 

BS 8468-4 applies to powered air-purifying respirators (PAPRs) 

intended to be used during, rescue, evacuation, escape, hazard 

containment and decontamination and similar activities. PAPR 

are an air-purifying respiratory protective device that uses an 

electrically operated blower to force ambient atmosphere through 

air-purifying elements to the respiratory interface 

BS 8468-4 should be used by emergency responders (fire,

BS EN 15333-1:2008 Respiratory equipment. Open-circuit 

umbilical supplied compressed gas diving apparatus. 

Demand apparatus 

BS EN 15333-1 specifies minimum requirements for demand 

surface supplied and demand surface oriented diving apparatus 

to ensure a minimum level of safe operation of the apparatus. 

A given open-circuit umbilical supplied compressed gas diving 

apparatus can only be approved when the apparatus or apparatus 

sub-assemblies satisfy the requirements of the tests specified in 

this BS EN 15333-1. The practical performance tests also have to 

be carried out successfully on complete apparatus where specified 

in this standard.

Sit harnesses 

BS EN 813 specifies requirements, testing, marking and 

information to be supplied by the manufacturer for sit harnesses

BS EN 352-8 is about entertainment audio ear-muffs. It specifies

Manufacturing Safety 

BS EN 999:1998 Safety of machinery. The positioning of 

protective equipment in respect of approach speeds of 

parts of the human body 

The protective equipment described in this standard to minimise 

risk relies on the relevant parts of that equipment being correctly 

positioned in relation to the danger zone. 

BS EN 999 provides parameters based on values for hand/arm and 

approach speeds. It also provides a methodology to determine the 

minimum distances from specific sensing or actuating devices of 

protective equipment to a danger zone. 

BS EN 999 has been revised and now reflects all relevant 

CEN amendments. 

AMENDED STANDARD 




BS EN 349:1993 Safety of machinery. Minimum gaps to 

avoid crushing of parts of the human body 

BS EN 349:1993 specifies minimum gaps relative to parts of the 

human body in machinery and is applicable when adequate safety 

can be achieved by this method. It aims to enable the user (e.g. 

standard makers, designers of machinery) to avoid hazards from 

crushing zones. 

BS EN 349 is applicable to risks from crushing hazards only and 

is not applicable to other possible hazards, e.g. impact, shearing, 

drawing-in, where additional or other measures need to be taken.

BS EN 415-8:2008 Safety of packaging machines. 

Strapping machines 

Strapping machines are used extensively in Europe, in an 

increasingly wide range of industries. They contain several 

significant hazards and have the potential to cause serious injury. 

BS EN 415-8 applies to the following groups of machines: 

• Powered hand strapping tools 

• Semi-automatic strapping machines 

• Automatic strapping machines 

• Horizontal pallet strapping machines 

• Vertical pallet strapping machines. 

BS EN 415-8 deals with safety requirements for machine design, construction, 

installation, commissioning, operation, adjustment, maintenance and cleaning of 

strapping machines.

BS EN ISO 13850:2008 Safety of machinery. Emergency 

stop. Principles for design 

BS EN ISO 13850 specifies functional requirements and design 

principles for the emergency stop function on machinery, 

independent of the type of energy used to control the function. 

It applies to all machinery except for: 

• Machines in which the provision of emergency stop would 

not lessen the risk 

• Hand-held portable machines and hand-guided machines. 

BS EN ISO 13850 does not deal with functions such as reversal or limitation of 

motion, deflection, shielding, braking or disconnecting, which can be part of the 

emergency stop function.

BS EN ISO 13849-1:2006 Safety of machinery. 

Safety-related parts of control systems. General 

principles for design 

BS EN ISO 13849-1 provides safety requirements and guidance on 

the principles for the design and integration of safety-related parts 

of control systems (SRP/CS), including the design of software. For 

these parts of SRP/CS, it specifies characteristics that include the 

performance level required for carrying out safety functions. It 

applies to SRP/CS, regardless of the type of technology and energy 

used (electrical, hydraulic, pneumatic, mechanical, etc.), for all 

kinds of machinery.

This European standard deals with safety requirements for machine 

design, construction, installation, commissioning, operation,

This standard applies to group and secondary packaging machines

and cleaning of group and secondary packaging machines.

BS EN 614-1:2006 Safety of machinery. Ergonomic 

design principles. Terminology and general principles 

BS EN 614-1 has been newly revised so it is fully up-to-date with 

the ergonomic principles to be followed during the design process 

of machinery. It applies to the interactions between operators and 

machinery when installing, operating, adjusting, maintaining, 

cleaning, dismantling, repairing or transporting equipment, and 

outlines the principles to be followed in taking the health, safety 

and well-being of the operator into account. 

The work system includes operators, job design, work equipment (e.g. machinery) 

work space, work environment, work process and the interactions between them. 

Good design takes into account how the operator is expected to interact with the 

work equipment and how the work equipment fits into the system as a whole.

This standard applies to the following groups of machines: 

• pallet banding machines 

• stretch film pallet wrapping machines 

• stretch film hood application machines 

• mobile stretch film wrapping machines 

• semi automatic self driving stretch film wrapping machines 

• shrink film pallet wrapping machines 

• shrink film hood application machines 

• film removing machines 

• shrinking systems 

• sleeve wrapping machines for product greater than 

400 mm in one direction 

• product centralising machines. 

BS EN 415-6 deals with safety requirements for machine design, construction, 

installation, commissioning, operation, adjustment, maintenance and cleaning of 

pallet wrapping machines.The extents to which hazards, hazardous situations and 

events are covered are indicated in Clause 4. 

BS EN 14656:2006 Safety of machinery. Safety 

requirements for extrusion presses for steel and 

non-ferrous metals 

This standard applies to extrusion presses from the exit side of 

the heater through associated handling, cooling and quenching 

equipment including, e.g. the puller, the hot saw, the run-out 

table, the stretcher, the cold saw, cold saw table and/or coiler 

when incorporated into the equipment, to a point where the 

extruded product is passed to associated finishing equipment. 

It specifies the health and safety requirements at all stages in 

the life of the equipment, its design, ordering, construction, use 

and disposal.

PD 5304 Guidance on safe use of machinery covers the 

safe use of machinery and provides comprehensive guidance 

on practical measures and techniques that may be applied to

BS EN ISO 14121:2007 Safety of machinery. 

Risk assessment. Principles 

BS EN ISO 14121 Part 1 establishes the general principles 

intended to be used to meet the risk reduction objectives 

established in BS EN ISO 12100-1, Clause 5. These 

principles of risk assessment bring together knowledge and 

experience of the design, use, incidents, accidents and harm 

related to machinery in order to assess the risks posed during 

the relevant phases of the life cycle of a machine. 

BS EN ISO 14121-1 provides guidance on the information that will be 

required to enable risk assessment to be carried out. Procedures are 

described for identifying hazards and estimating and evaluating risk.
