Effective health and safety
management can help minimize
potential hazards and accidents
raising standards worldwide

Health and safety management standards and
publications from BSI British Standards
Some organizations find effective health and safety management brings great
business benefit, yet despite this many fail to manage this discipline well and so:
• 2.1 million people were suffering from an illness they believed was caused
or made worse by their current or past work
• 229 workers were killed at work, a rate of 0.8 per 100 000 workers
• 34 million days were lost overall (1.4 days per worker), 28 million due
to work-related ill health and 6 million due to workplace injury
Source: Key annual figures 2007/08, Health and Safety Executive, 2008
As a result of major accidents at work in recent years, greater emphasis has
been placed on the management of occupational health and safety (OH&S)
in legislation, which all employers MUST embrace.
Health and Safety Self-assessment
As legislation becomes increasingly stringent
organizations need to find ways to undertake
reviews to assess their own performance. But to
be effective, reviews need to be conducted within
a structured management system that is integrated
within the organization.
BSI Health & Safety Self-assessment uses a series
of questions to interrogate your occupational
health and safety management system against
best practice standards such as BS OHSAS 18001.
It helps you to identify where your occupational
health and safety management system is working
well and where the system needs attention.
What it can do for you
• Provide you with a series of questions, broken down into 16 discrete
sections to help you through a comprehensive review of your OH&S
management system
percentage weighted score
• Direct electronic access to the relevant standards and guidance so that you
have the latest information at your fingertips either on your desktop or
hand-held device
• Help you identify OH&S risks and gaps so that you can improve and
amend your policy to ensure that your organization follows best practice
• Add value to your business by demonstrating good governance
BS 9999:2008 Code of practice for fire safety in the
design, management and use of buildings
BS 9999 gives recommendations and guidance on the design,
management and use of buildings to achieve acceptable levels
of fire safety for all people in and around buildings.
BS 9999 is applicable to the design of new buildings, and
to alterations, extensions and changes of use of an existing
building, with the exception of individual homes and with limited
applicability in the case of certain specialist buildings. It also
provides guidance on the ongoing management of fire safety in a
building throughout the entire life cycle of the building, including
guidance for designers to ensure that the overall design of a building assists and
enhances the management of fire safety. It can be used as a tool for assessing existing
buildings, although fundamental change in line with the guidelines might well be
limited or not practicable.
Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
BS EN ISO 9185:2007 Protective clothing. Assessment
of resistance of materials to molten metal splash
BS EN ISO 9185 specifies a method for assessing the heat
penetration resistance of materials intended for use in clothing
to protect against large splashes of molten metal. It provides
specific procedures for assessing the effects of splashes of
molten aluminium, molten cryolite, molten copper, molten iron
and molten mild steel.
The principle of the test method is applicable to a wider range
of hot molten materials than those for which specific procedures
are set out, provided that appropriate measures are applied to
protect the test operator. It is important to note that good
resistance of a material to a pure molten metal does not
guarantee a good performance against any slag that can
be present in a manufacturing process.
BS ISO 13506 provides the general principles of a test method
for evaluating the performance of complete garments or
protective clothing ensembles in a flash fire or other short
duration exposures. This test method characterizes the thermal
protection provided by garments, based on the measurement
of heat transfer to a full-size manikin exposed to a laboratory
simulation of a fire with controlled heat flux density, duration
and flame distribution. The heat transfer measurements can also
be used to calculate the predicted skin burn injury resulting from
the exposure. In addition, observations are recorded on the
overall behaviour of the test specimen during and after the
exposure.
CE Marking for Machinery. A guide to the European Directive
If you design, manufacture or supply machinery then you will need
the most up to date information for your industry. This new guide
covers the essential aspects of the Directive and will help you
assess the implications for your products and decide what action is
necessary. A new European Machinery Directive 2006/42/EC was
published on 9 June 2006 and came into force on 30 June 2006.
Substantial amendments to the current machinery directive
98/37/EC have been made affecting those involved with the
design, manufacture or supply of machinery. All Member States
of the European Union have to amend their national legislation by 29 June 2008.
Manufacturers and suppliers of machinery will need to assess the implications of the
new provisions on their products and take action as necessary.
CE Marking for Machinery has been produced for all those involved with the supply,
manufacture, refurbishing or purchasing of machinery. It gives practical advice on how
to self-certify and CE mark products falling within the scope of the Machinery
Directive. Designed to act as a one-stop-reference source, the guide is a convenient
