Jasper’s Visitor Information Centre (VIC) is the classic log-andstone
cabin at the heart of town. Not only is it the year-round hub
where you can find information about what to do, where to stay,
and where to eat in Jasper and Jasper National Park, but it is also
one of Jasper’s original buildings (1914) – and the former home
of the first Park Superintendent. The VIC is recognized as a
Heritage Building. Across the street from the new Two Brothers
Totem Pole, its front lawn is a popular place to hang out, and it’s
a frequent venue for festivals and outdoor entertainment.
A Brief History
of Friends
From restoring Pyramid Island to
hosting special events like Parks Day
and Moonlight Madness, Friends of
Jasper National Park has been working to
fulfill their commitment to provide locals and
visitors the opportunity to interact and connect to
Jasper National Park for over 30 years. While the
non-profit organization began as Parks and People, a
committee of the Jasper-Yellowhead Historical Society,
it soon outgrew its status and amicably parted ways
with the museum to form the independent charity
organization called Friends of Jasper National Park.
The organization led initiatives to not only sign all
of the park’s day hiking trails (see Loni and Her Trail
of Diamonds, pg 22), but they also took on the role
of Project Coordinator for the recently completed
Jasper Discovery Trail, which uses interpretive signs
to enhance visitors’ understanding and appreciation
for the area surrounding the town of Jasper.
And its work isn’t all done behind the scenes; Friends
of Jasper National Park runs activities throughout the
entire year, including interpretive walks that highlight
everything from local history to the far-off moon.
They also run a gift shop, located inside the Visitor
Information Centre, and all proceeds go directly to
their programs and projects that help keep Jasper’s
reputation as Canada’s wildest National Park.
Summer in Jasper
Surrounded by the Canadian Rocky Mountains, the town
of Jasper is the heart of Canada’s wildest National Park.
Its backyard is an 11,000 sq. km swath of wilderness linked by a trail network
that stretches to every corner. The fun never stops: how about white water
rafting or backcountry horseback riding in the largest national park in the
Canadian Rockies, cruising down the world’s most scenic highway on the back
of a Harley Davidson, playing golf on Canada’s #1 resort course, soaring in
a cable car among towering snow-capped peaks, or reliving the enchanting,
colourful history of one of North America’s most fascinating frontier towns?
Escaping to Jasper can also mean unplugging from the digital world and
finally cracking open a new book; dining on everything from traditional
Italian to fusion cuisine using local Alberta ingredients; sampling beers
made from some of the freshest water on earth at the first Canadian
National Park brewery; or listening to emerging musicians at a local pub.
Jasper National Park is home to a whole other type of local: it’s a natural
corridor for a large range of wildlife in its natural habitat. It’s common to see
black and grizzly bears, bighorn sheep, mountain goats, deer and elk in the
surrounding valleys when they’re out grazing in their natural playground.
With all of this protected land and so much to do, no wonder
you’re planning to visit where the wild never left the wilderness!
If you encounter a bear,
give it LOTS of space
In the Bears’
Backyard
Wildlife of all sizes abounds in Jasper
National Park, and most people here
have their fair share of stories about
encounters on the trail, a sighting of a
particularly elusive animal, or the perfect photo
they “almost” captured. While it is common to see
all types of wildlife along the roads, on the trails,
and sometimes right in town, it’s easy to forget
that Jasper is Canada’s wildest national park, and
visitors and residents alike are living in the bears’
backyard. Ask any local about their favourite
bear stories, and they will be sure to tell you all
about their run-ins while at work and at play.
Most encounters take place on the trail. With over
1,000 kilometres of trails in the park, there are lots
of opportunities to see wildlife, including bears.
Like most kids, bear cubs are often curious about
the world around them and sometimes this curiosity
can get them into trouble. One Parks Canada
employee was mopping the floor of an outhouse
when someone came in behind her. Without turning,
she said that the cleaning was nearly finished and
16 Jasper.travel
the outhouse would reopen shortly.
A reply was grunted at her, so she
turned around. A cub was staring at
her with interest from the doorway.
The startled employee accidentally
tripped over her bucket, sending
both bucket and mop flying towards
the bear. A bucket full of water over
the head was not what the little cub
expected, and he ran off into the
woods sneezing and shaking his head.
Another little bear came across a
group picnic along the Maligne Lake
Road one day and decided to cross
the bridge to get a closer look. The
picnickers ran for the washrooms and
squeezed as many people into each
outhouse as they could, but their noise
and commotion scared the bear and
sent him scurrying up a tree to safety.
This natural curiosity and ability to
cause a commotion was surely the
inspiration behind Jasper the Bear,
the town mascot and local trouble
maker. While once a popular Maclean’s
Magazine cartoon, Jasper the Bear is
more likely to be the life of the party
in town these days, as he celebrates
his 65 th birthday in 2013. Unlike the
rest of his bear brothers and sisters,
this bear is friendly and approachable.
As you can see by the many people
who visit his statue right in town, he
loves hugs and posing for pictures.
Bears, in particular grizzly bears,
have great food memories and will
often return to the same sites if they
had a particularly memorable meal.
The Jasper Tramway often welcomes
a grizzly in early spring at the Top
Station – he’ll come right up on the
balcony to peek in the windows.
Other bears are often seen from the
Tram cabin during the ride, roaming
on the hill below. The golf course at
Jasper Park Lodge is popular with
grizzly bears in the spring as well;
golfers frequently report seeing grizzlies
looking for food along the forest edge
or dashing across the open fairways.
What an incentive for a hole in one!
Jasper National Park offers its visitors
the chance to see wildlife in their
natural habitat and for you to create
your own stories about encounters to
share with both your friends at home
and your new friends here in Jasper.
Get out on the trails and enjoy the
beauty that is Jasper, but please always
remember that you are in their backyard:
be “bear aware” when out on the trails
and respect trail closures and wildlife
notices. To help all of Jasper’s animals
thrive, keep a proper distance when
encountering wildlife and never feed
or approach them. For tips on the
best places to see wildlife and to learn
about wildlife behaviour, visit the Parks
Motoring Along
the Maligne Valley
Maligne Canyon Ice Walk
Maligne Lake
The drive through the
Maligne Valley starts as you
cross the Athabasca River,
on the Moberly Bridge, and it doesn’t
end until after you’ve snapped the
requisite photo of Curly Philips’
Maligne Lake Boathouse. While
it used to be a two day horseback
journey from the Fairmont Jasper
Park Lodge, then known as Tent
City, to Fred Brewster’s Maligne
Lake Chalet, it’s now possible in as
little as 45 minutes, but to explore it
thoroughly is at least a half-day tour.
The first stop is Maligne Canyon. Its
standing as the deepest canyon in
the Canadian Rockies and Canada’s
largest karst system are under debate,
but there’s no taking away from the
spectacular view from the canyon
rim that’s been carved out since the
glaciers receded millennia ago.
“The nice thing about the canyon,”
says Parks Canada interpreter
Brian Catto, “is it doesn’t need to
be a sunny day. Even if you can’t
see the mountains, the canyon
is right in front of your eyes.”
In the winter, the Maligne Canyon
Ice Walk gives visitors a different
perspective, from the bottom
up. The tour traces the canyon
floor beneath frozen waterfalls
and past prehistoric fossils and
cave entrances. It is such a unique
adventure that it’s considered one
of Canada’s signature experiences.
After the canyon, the road continues
to climb alongside the Maligne River,
but something unusual happens.
Just before the stunning view of the
Colin Range across Medicine Lake,
and only 15 kilometers above the
raging white-water of the canyon, the
river runs dry. Medicine Lake doesn’t
have an outflow river. Instead, it
drains through an underground
karst system – a series of connected
limestone caves - thought to be
one of the largest in Canada, and
the water eventually makes its way
back to the surface downstream.
The road clings to the edge of
Medicine Lake for over eight
kilometres and it’s common to
see bighorn sheep along the way.
Wildlife sightings continue all
the way to Maligne Lake, too,
as this stretch of forest is ideal
moose and black bear habitat.
As the road makes its final climb
towards Maligne Lake, it winds the
clock back through Jasper history.
The first buildings that come into
sight are the chalet and guesthouse
originally built by Fred Brewster
in 1927. Both are recognized
nationally as historic buildings
and, after renovations in 2011, are
once again open to the public. In
the past, afternoon tea was offered
as a warm welcome to horseback
guests after a hard day on the trail
from Medicine Lake. The tradition
has been renewed by Maligne
Tours and its down-to-earth style
now blends the tastes of afternoon
tea with its rustic surroundings.
Off to the left is the Curly Philips
boathouse. This red roofed
building is the focus point of the
iconic Jasper photo that includes
the view down Maligne Lake
towards the glaciated summits of
Mounts Charleton and Unwin.
Although the road ends at Maligne
Lake, the adventure need not.
Canoe, kayak and rowboat rentals
are available at the boathouse;
hiking trails, like the infamous
43-km Skyline trail or the much
shorter Bald Hills hike, offer
terrific views from the alpine;
and the Maligne Lake boat cruise
ferries visitors to Spirit Island.
These boats have changed since
Curly Philips’ hand built vessel,
Leah, first carried visitors to the
end of the lake. And while the Leah
still makes an annual appearance
in Jasper’s Canada Day Parade, the
new boats each have a glass-enclosed
heated cabin to keep visitors
comfortable no matter the weather.
Reader’s Digest subscribers have
voted the experience as Canada’s
Best Cruise, too, and it is easy to
understand why. The 90-minute
boat trip is the quintessential
Rocky Mountain experience that
gives everyone the opportunity
to unplug and explore the far
reaches of Jasper National Park’s
backcountry wilderness.
Loni and Her Trail
of Diamonds
If you plan to hit the trails in Jasper
keep an eye out for Loni Klettl.
Just don’t try to keep her pace.
If you plan to hit the trails in Jasper
– whether it’s a short 1-hr walk
along the Jasper Discovery Trail or
a multi-day hike along the Skyline
Trail – keep an eye out for Loni Klettl.
Just don’t try to keep her pace.
“When I’m alone,” she admits, “I like
to go.”
Her minimum day, when she runs,
is 12 kilometres. On the weekend,
she’ll do a longer trip into the
backcountry to get away from the
crowds. Throughout the winter, she
skis 2-3 days per week at Marmot Basin
to keep her technique sharp, but she
also squeezes in multiple backcountry
tours and cross-country ski sessions.
Not only is she an avid trail user,
but she is also the biggest advocate
for a sustainable trail network in
Jasper National Park. She was on
the committee that helped build the
Three Valley Confluence Trail Plan
and she was a founding member of
the Jasper Trail Alliance Committee,
whose mission statement is to help
Parks Canada create and maintain a
vibrant and accessible trail network.
When Klettl isn’t out exploring, she
works at Fiddle River Restaurant. She
has worked there long enough that
she jokingly claims to be part of the
furniture, but as a born and raised
Jasperite, she also understands the
link between tourism and locals.
“We see the same people over and
over [at the restaurant],” she says. “We
become part of their Jasper experience.”
As a teenager, Klettl was a natural
athlete who excelled on the ski slopes.
In 1976, at the age of 16, she joined
the Canadian Alpine Ski Team and
began racing around the globe.
“The world was a big place back
then,” she admits. “I had to say ‘bye
Mom, see you in two months.’ We
didn’t call home; we wrote letters.”
She reached the 1980 Winter Olympics
in Lake Placid, New York, and took
13th in the Woman’s Downhill.
Although she continued on the World
Cup circuit for the remainder of that
season, she retired unexpectedly during
a summer training camp in Oregon.
She was only 20 years old but she says
her heart simply wasn’t in it anymore.
To anybody who’s witnessed her passion
for the Jasper wilderness, it’s easy to see
“When I’m alone,”
she admits,
“I like to go.”
that her heart has never left the Rockies.
While there are a few trails that she
hasn’t done, she claims it’s often better
When asked to pinpoint her favorite
concede that if it were her final outdoor
adventure in Jasper National Park, she’d
want to spend it above treeline, in the
alpine where the weather can be fiercest.
“Some of the craziest days are when
the weather throws itself at you,”
says Loni, “and those are often
Wherever she goes, chances are she’s
Icefield Centre (103 km from Jasper)
The Columbia Icefield: visual high point of the
Icefields Parkway. An access road takes you to
an interpretive trail leading to the toe of the
Athabasca Glacier.
For your own safety, do not walk on the glacier
without proper equipment and a knowledgeable
guide. The Icefield Centre combines all services
under one roof along with impressive views of
numerous glaciers and surrounding peaks.
Parks Canada offers trail and visitor information
and impressive interpretive exhibits. Commercial
services include “Ice Explorer” rides on the
Athabasca Glacier, a hotel, a cafeteria and a gift
shop. Open May to October.
Miette Hotsprings (61 km from Jasper)
A winding mountain road leads you up the scenic Fiddle Valley to the hottest mineral
springs in the Canadian Rockies! Along the way, stop at the Pocahontas Interpretive
Trail just off Highway 16 on the Miette Road to learn about the history of coal mining in
the area. Pocahontas Campground is 3 km up the road. Farther along, look for a
viewpoint facing the impressive limestone slabs of Ashlar Ridge. Facilities at the springs
include: Parks Canada soaking pools, a cool pool, a food concession, an interpretive
trail, a picnic area, some outstanding day hikes and a privately-owned motel. Road and
facilities are open mid-May to mid-October.
Maligne Canyon (11.5 km from Jasper)
The Maligne River plunges 23 m into a steep-walled gorge of limestone
bedrock. A self-guiding trail takes you over six different footbridges,
providing spectacular views of the canyon en route. A privately owned
teahouse is located adjacent to the parking area.
Medicine Lake (27 km from Jasper)
A most peculiar lake. The Maligne River flows in but there is no surface
outlet. Instead, the water flows underground for many kilometres,
emerging in such places as Maligne Canyon and Lac Beauvert. Look for
an interpretive plaque describing this phenomenon at the first
lakeshore viewpoint on your way up the Maligne Valley.
Maligne Lake (48 km from Jasper)
Maligne Lake is the largest lake in Jasper National Park (22 km
long) and the deepest (97 m). Renowned for its scenery and its
fishing, the area also offers exceptional hiking opportunities. A
concession provides cruises on the lake, rowboat rentals, fish
guiding and restaurant service. Day use area only; no overnight
accommodation, gas or camping.
Sunwapta Falls (55 km from Jasper)
A short access road next to the motel takes you to the
parking area. The falls tumble into a limestone gorge
rather like Maligne Canyon. Motel and restaurant are
open May to October.
CAMPING is limited to designated campgrounds.
Camping is available either through advance reservations
How To Drive For Wildlife
Park roadways intersect important travel corridors
for wildlife. You can help prevent road kills.
Stay alert and scan the road ahead.
Look for shining eyes at night.
When you see one animal, watch for others.
Obey posted speed limits. They usually indicate
animal crossing areas.
Pay special attention during dawn and dusk.
Always keep your distance
Any wild animal can be dangerous if you get too close.
Do not approach or entice wildlife. Use binoculars or a
telephoto lens instead. Stay at least:
100 metres (10 bus lengths) away from
BEARS, COUGARS and WOLVES
30 metres (3 bus lengths) away from
ELK, DEER, SHEEP, GOATS and MOOSE
How to Photograph Jasper’s Dark Skies
Jasper National Park is the world’s largest
Dark Sky Preserve and the term “dark sky” describes
a lack of light pollution – the orange haze that often
obstructs our view of the stars. A darker sky means brighter
stars, and few places in the Northern Hemisphere rival
Jasper’s star gazing.
These clear skies inspire photographers, too, but they can be
difficult to capture without the proper technique. Here are 10
steps to get you started:
1. Bring the Right Camera There is no denying that dSLR
cameras, with their interchangeable lenses and fully manual
controls are best for night-sky photography, but many point
and shoot cameras will do the job.
The biggest necessity is a camera with either a 30” maximum
shutter or a BULB setting that allows you to hold the shutter
open for an indefinite period of time.
2. Shoot Wide It may seem obvious, but there isn’t much
available light after sundown, so it is important to shoot
with a wide-open aperture.
3. Shoot Wider Another secret to powerful night sky
imagery is to include huge swathes of sky, so telephoto
lenses are best left at home. Wide-angle lenses, usually
around 20 mm, are most commonly used.
4. Raise the ISO A long shutter speed and wide aperture
aren’t enough to expose the image. Dial up the highest ISO
possible that won’t affect the overall image. Most new cameras
won’t lose any image quality when used between ISO800-3200.
5. Reduce the Noise An unfortunate consequence of high
ISO images is unwanted noise – the grainy texture often
associated with older film cameras. Almost every dSLR now
has built-in noise-reduction software that can be turned on
within the camera’s menu.
6. Avoid the Shake Use a tripod. For every single image.
No matter what.
7. Do the Math The shutter speed determines whether
the stars will be frozen in place or streaking across the
photograph. To freeze stars in place, use the rule of 600
to calculate the longest maximum shutter:
600/focal length = shutter speed.
8. Avoid the Moon
The moon will often overexpose the sky and make it
difficult to see the stars. To ensure a clear view of the stars,
it’s best to shoot when the moon is below the horizon.
9. Paint with Light
Many night images feature a silhouetted foreground with
spectacular skies. To make more impactful images, get
creative and use a flashlight to expose the foreground. It’ll
take a few attempts, but the best trick is to use a flashlight like
a paintbrush and make several equal passes across the scene.
10. Find the Right Location
Old Fort Point: From Highway 93A North follow the
Old Fort Point/Lac Beauvert access road. Cross the
bridge and park in the lot on the right. (4 km from town)
Pyramid Island: Follow the Pyramid Lake Road
to the parking lot at the end. (7 km from town)
Maligne Lake: Follow the Maligne Lake Road to
the parking lot at the end (50 km from town)
Athabasca Glacier: Follow highway 93 South to
the Columbia Icefields Center (100 km from town)
Jasper’s Ski Hill Turns 50!
In the late 1920s, Joe Weiss
skied into the eastern slopes
of Marmot Mountain and
found the area that he later
called Marmot Basin.
Weiss, originally from Switzerland,
came to Jasper soon after arriving
in Canada and became one of the
early pioneers of skiing and ski
mountaineering in the Rockies.
Instantly fascinated and welcomed by
Jasper, Weiss’ personal discovery of
Jasper runs parallel to the evolution
of Marmot Basin. From the early days
of Marmot Basin, where passionate
pioneers like John Ogilvy and Joe
Couture helped put Marmot on the
map, to today where a Marmot ski
instructor from England is a proud
community member, Jasperites –
new and old – are instantly a vital
part of the fabric of this town.
Now, as Marmot Basin celebrates
its 50th anniversary, we collectively
celebrate this occasion – not
simply as a ski area, but as an
interconnected community.
“I came here and it was going
to be for a winter,” says Joe
Couture, former ski instructor
at the Jasper Ski Club. “It’s
been a very long ski season.”
Like two soldiers trading old war
stories, Couture and his friend,
John Ogilvy, reminisce about half a
century of seasons at Marmot Basin.
Ogilvy, as an engineer, had a big
hand in developing Marmot Basin’s
infrastructure, while Joe Couture almost
made it his mission to bring skiers to
Jasper – he single-handedly brought
prairie folk from ski clubs to Jasper by
the busload in the very early years.
Thinking he would put in a
three-year stint and move back
to Vancouver, Ogilvy stayed.
“I saw a small community developing,”
he said. “It had the tools to do
it. And I fell in love with it.”
The two admit that the skiing and
snowboarding at Marmot Basin is
world-class, but the common thread
that runs through their entire story is
the drive and passion of the people who
make up this Rocky Mountain town.
Marmot Basin made Jasper a winter
destination. The proof is in the early
Jasperite memories: they recall a time
when there was no paved highway
west of Jasper; when people used to
ride a westbound train all night to ski
and stay at the historic Astoria hotel.
“If we hadn’t had Marmot Basin,”
said Couture, “you could have
shot a cannon down the street.”
Fast-forward to today. As the 1,675-
acre, 86-run Marmot Basin ski area,
and the community of Jasper celebrate
this mountainous milestone, the
evolution Couture and Ogilvy have
witnessed is inspiring. No longer is
there an upsetting lack of access to
Jasper National Park, but there is also
a unique diversity in this community.
Jeremy Badcock is an example of
the ease of access to Jasper National
Park and of the thriving community
spirit. Raised in the coastal town of
South Hampton, England, Badcock
— a high-level ski school instructor
at Marmot Basin — spends his
winters in Jasper. And although he
heads to South Hampton after the
season, he returns every winter.
“It’s the beauty,” says Badcock, “and
it’s the friendly culture. The snow
is good. The skiing is good. Jasper
is unspoiled. It’s one of the only
places I’ve been premier skiing -and
I’ve skied a lot— that isn’t a tourist
town. It’s a working class town
with amazing people that happens
to have a world-class ski hill.”
As strong as the skiing is, Badcock
admits that it’s still the people
of Jasper and the town itself
who make up the biggest selling
feature for Marmot Basin.
“There’s a completely different
vibe here,” says Badcock. “I will
never lose my accent, but I’ve
never felt like an outsider.”
The authentic, mountain-town appeal
doesn’t go unnoticed. Marmot Basin,
as a business, is first to raise their
ski tips to the citizens of Jasper.
Brian Rode, Vice President of
Marketing and Sales at Marmot is
another transplant who didn’t intend
on staying much more than a season.
He’s been here over thirty years and he’s
quick to note that Marmot Basin has
always thrived on working with locals
and drawing energy from community.
“Marmot Basin is held up by the power
and spirit of the Jasper community,
as much as it is by the strength of
the natural wonder,” says Rode.
“Without a driven and dedicated
community serving Marmot for
the last 50 years, we wouldn’t be
celebrating this momentous occasion.”
1. Mile Zero: the big white “Mystery Rock”
symbolizes Mile Zero of the Icefields
Parkway and the 2700 km Highway 93
route to Wickenburg, Arizona.
2. Athabasca Falls: water plunges off a
quartzite plateau through softer limestone,
carving out a spectacular collection of
potholes and powerful white water.
3. Sunwapta Falls Rocky Mountain Lodge:
whether looking for an overnight stop, a
gourmet lunch, or simply a roadside pit
stop, make sure to visit both Sunwapta
Falls and the resort, even if it’s only to
meet Sunwapta Sam.
4. Icefields Centre: trade in your personal
vehicle for a seat on the massive Brewster
Ice Explorer and experience the Athabasca
Glacier from atop the ice.
5. Wickenburg, Arizona: the Icefields Parkway
is only the start of the journey; Highway 93
is the ultimate long-haul route to the
All roads really do lead to Jasper, and getting here is half the fun.
Those from far and wide find it easy to fly into Calgary, Edmonton, or
Vancouver. The last leg to Jasper is the most stunning. Prefer to be at the
wheel? Drive the spectacular Icefields Parkway. Don’t want to miss a thing?
Daily door-to-door shuttle service from Edmonton, Banff, or Calgary may
suit your style. Better yet, experience a modernized piece of the past and
ride the rails: enjoy amazing views from the dome car of the VIA Rail train
from Vancouver, Edmonton or Toronto.
scenic and beautiful. Highway #16 (also called
the Yellowhead Highway) runs through the park and is
of highway in the world, runs north-south connecting
Jasper with the Trans-Canada Highway #1 near Lake
Louise and Banff. All major roads in Jasper are paved and
all major highways have shoulders. Make sure to factor in
plenty of time for breaks as you’ll definitely want to take
photos along the way. The maximum speed limit inside the
national parks is 90 km/hr, with several areas having slower
limits for wildlife safety.
