Proposals for a new Aldi foodstore –
Lisburne Lane, Offerton
Public views welcome via post, email and telephone
Welcome to our newsletter
Aldi, the premium discount food retailer, is preparing proposals for a new neighbourhood food
store in the heart of Offerton’s Local Shopping Centre.
The store is proposed on land currently occupied by the existing shopping precinct and adjacent vehicle servicing
garage, to the east of Lisburne Lane. Aldi’s proposals are in line with Stockport Metropolitan Borough Council’s long-term
objective to regenerate Offerton Local Centre through the redevelopment of its predominantly vacant shopping precinct.
The provision of a new Aldi food store in Offerton would bring enhanced benefits to the whole community. The proposals
would bring a brand new custom built store designed to complement existing offerings and provide more choice
for local residents. A new Aldi would provide residents with the opportunity to purchase deeply discounted quality
products. Aldi customers save between 20 and 30 percent on their shopping without compromising on quality, with
everyday items available at low prices, giving residents an alternative to traditional supermarkets.
About the proposals
• A new Aldi food store with a net sales area of 990sqm and
a gross internal area of 1,419sqm
• 103 car parking spaces, including five disabled and nine
parent/child spaces
• Free car parking for up to 90 minutes
• Access achieved via Lisburne Lane
• Up to 25 full and part time jobs for local people
• Attractive landscaping incorporated into the scheme to
enhance the appearance of the site
• A high quality design, which offers a contemporary
shopping experience
We welcome your views on the proposals
Site layout
More local choice for high quality food
Aldi believes that there is a real need for a new food store to
serve Offerton in order to improve consumer choice and
competition locally.
Offerton Local Centre does not currently benefit a
supermarket of sufficient size to cater for a family’s ‘weekly’
food shopping needs, meaning that residents have to
travel further afield for such a resource. Aldi’s proposals will
provide Offerton residents with a local alternative, reducing
fuel costs and making food shopping more convenient.
Aldi’s proposals will also help existing Offerton traders by
providing an anchor food store with free car parking which
will increase footfall in the Local Centre, leading to spin-off
trade for independent businesses.
Design
Aldi is keen to transform this predominantly redundant
in-centre site by introducing a landmark development to
the area. The new food store will provide a modern
shopping environment, offering a quality design featuring
high levels of glazing and rendering to give a crisp, clean
look to the building.
Aldi takes great pride in the style and design of its stores,
with landscaping schemes a key part of creating an
attractive and welcoming environment. The landscaping
within the site will aim to enhance the appearance of the
area around the store with a mix of tree and shrub
planting, and will provide an attractive setting for the store.
We welcome your views on the proposals
The Aldi offering
Aldi has a unique offering and does not act as a one stop
shop unlike other larger retailers. Aldi does not have a
butchers, fishmongers or bakers nor does it sell tobacco,
newspapers/magazines for example.
Instead Aldi is known for encouraging linked trips
between its stores and other businesses in the area, as
typically Aldi customers will purchase products that they
consider to be value for money and then will go on to
complete their weekly grocery shopping in other stores
and specialist independent businesses.
This offers a complementary facility to Offerton’s existing
pattern of trading.
About Aldi
Aldi is one of the world’s largest privately owned companies
with more than 7,000 stores across Europe, North America
and Australia. Aldi opened its first stores in the UK in 1990 and
has more than 410 stores across the UK.
Aldi is able to achieve lower prices through an extraordinarily
efficient operation, from the sourcing of its products, to the
retail experience in store. In an Aldi store, you will not find
lots of versions of the same thing. Aldi focuses on quality
rather than quantity; stocking a range of groceries that
includes everything shoppers need, everyday of the week.
This allows Aldi to get the lowest prices from suppliers – then
pass on the savings to customers with quantity discounts.
Aldi would like to welcome the local community to provide views on their proposals for Offerton Local Centre in advance
of the submission of a detailed planning application. Comments can be provided via telephone, email or post:
