As a society, we (as parents)
appreciate the importance
of regular
checkups for our children’s
teeth, hearing,
and vision, but we are
Dr. Febbraro poorly informed of the
need for spinal checkups.
This is a distressing fact, because a Chiropractic
checkup is one of the most important
checkups your children will ever have!
We can appreciate this by understanding that
your child’s spine protects their spinal cord,
Indy 500 Here We Come!
by Diane Prem
Hampton High School Marching
Band practiced many days after
school marching around the high
school in parade formation under the blazing
sun to prepare for the three mile, hour and
one-half march in the Indy 500 Parade on
Saturday, May 26 th. “There are 154 students
going, and they are very well prepared. It’s
a gigantic event, one of the top three parades
in the country, and is the culmination of a
month-long racing celebration. Indianapolis
really rolls it out. I am genuinely looking
forward to the trip!” stated Band Director
Chad Himmler.
Everyday leading up to the event and the
entire weekend was planned out to ensure
things ran smoothly. The Thursday beforehand,
students dropped off their luggage at
the high school to have it inspected the next
day by police dogs. Sousaphone player Matt
Bauman said, “It’s a social event that everyone
looks forward to and Mr. Himmler does
a great job organizing the event.” “We are
all so excited to be together all weekend, not
only for the parade but for Cedar Point. It is
going to be so much fun!” exclaimed “Clare
Sisters” (a nickname for the clarinet players)
Kat Omecene and Sarah Zbur.
The students departed directly after
school in motor coaches for the ten-hour bus
ride that included a stop at the Golden Corral
in Zanesville, Ohio. The next day, after a
buffet breakfast at the Sheraton Hotel, students
departed for the Indianapolis 500 Festival
Parade in downtown Indianapolis.
With a forecasted temperature reaching into
the mid-90’s, this would be the hottest performance
ever in the history of the parade.
The parade was televised on the NBC
Sports Network, while viewers watched the
band’s outstanding performance on the
checkered-carpet to a crowd of approximately
300,000. This is the largest audience
the band will perform for during their high
school years.
Olivia Newton-John and
viewers were treated to a
spectacle that included
the Indianapolis 500 racecar
drivers, celebrities
such as Gladys Knight,
Guy Fieri and Jana
Kramer, mascots Smurfette
and Clumsy Smurf,
and 14 marching bands
from across the country.
The evening concluded
with a dinner and
party at the Children’s
Museum of Indianapolis,
The Grand Marshall was
open to all of the bands performing at the
parade. There, students danced to music
spun by a DJ, mingled with other bands, and
roamed the museum’s many displays and
activities. The excitement and fun continued
the next day with a trip to Cedar Point, Ohio.
Clad in matching T-shirts, the band spent 12
hours hanging out with friends, enjoying
rides, attractions, and concession stands.
The exhilarated and tired students returned
to Hampton High School around 2:00 a.m.
It was truly a once-in-a-lifetime experience.
The weekend was filled with great fun
and never-ending excitement. Congratulations
for an outstanding job!
was unable to maintain a lane of travel.
A traffic stop was initiated. Police could
beverage upon the driver’s breath as well
as displaying other signs of impairment.
After failing field sobriety tests, she was
placed under arrest for DUI. During the
inventory search of the actor’s vehicle, a
small bag was recovered in the center armrest.
It was found to contain suspected
marijuana as well as a pipe.
On Sunday, April 29 while on patrol
at approximately 9:45 p.m., police observed
a vehicle traveling southbound on
Middle Road with the right tires completely
off of the roadway. It swerved back
onto the roadway and then back off. Police
began to follow the vehicle and it continued
traveling off of the roadway and was
also following extremely close to the vehicle
in front of it. The vehicle pulled off
into a driveway on Middle Road where
police encountered the operator. The driver
displayed obvious signs of impairment,
headlights. It was traveling directly in the
middle of the southbound lanes and had
severe front end damage and the front
driver’s side tire was torn apart and only
partially on the wheel. The vehicle
matched the description of a vehicle that
had originally hit something in West Deer
and Indiana Township. Police activated
emergency lights and audible signals but
the operator would not yield. The vehicle
continued until it could not move any further.
Both front airbags had been deployed
inside the vehicle and police observed the
operator began screaming and punching
the steering wheel when he could not get
the vehicle to move any further. The operator
was found to be under the influence
of alcohol and possibly drugs. The driver
was placed under arrest and transported to
the hospital for medical treatment and a
blood draw. Charges to follow.
On Monday, May 21 while on patrol
at approximately midnight, police observed
a vehicle enter Route 8 south from
Duncan Avenue. As the actor’s vehicle did
so, it struck the curb on Route 8 at Duncan.
The police began to follow said vehicle.
It was observed swaying within the
right curb lane as well as striking the curb
on several occasions. A traffic stop was
initiated on Route 8 near the Shaler line.
Upon speaking with the driver, police
could detect a very strong odor of an alcoholic
beverage as well as displaying other
signs of impairment. She was requested to
perform a PBT with a positive reading.
She was then requested to exit her vehicle
tests. After failing the tests, she was
placed under arrest for DUI. Charges to
follow.
Who Else Wants to Use
this Ridiculously Simple
Anti-aging Strategy?
Dr. Howard Rosenthal
I
am often asked: "Dr. Rosenthal, what is
your favorite research experiment of alltime?"
The answer, my dear reader, is
easy. It was a truly amazing experiment conducted
by psychologist Ellen Langer, the first
woman tenured at Harvard University.
In 1979 Dr. Langer and four graduate assistants
compiled a group of 70 to 80 year old
men. She then placed them in a retreat setting. Dr. Langer told
them to live as if it was 1959. Yes, their photo IDs were from
1959. Yes, the magazines in their living quarters were from
1959; and yes, when asked what they did for a living, the participants
answered as if it was still . . . you guessed it . . . 1959.
Heart throbs and super stars Bobby Darin and Frankie Avalon
graced the waves of the AM radio stations.
In as little as one week time (aging?) reversed for these
men. Their arthritis and finger flexibility improved -- no pain
pills necessary! Their skin and hormonal profiles improved and
get this; people who saw their pictures taken at the time rated
them as looking much younger. The clock for these men didn't
just stop; instead it went backwards or counterclockwise.
What will you be thinking about yourself today? Or as
baseball legend Satchel Paige once asked, "How old would you
be if you didn't know how old you were?"
striking the guardrail. Charges to follow.
On Friday, May 18 at approximately 4:50 p.m., police
were dispatched to a two-vehicle accident on Wildwood
Sample Road. The driver failed to negotiate a curve properly
and went into the oncoming lane striking another vehicle.
The driver of that vehicle complained of head, neck and back
pain and was transported to the hospital to be evaluated. The
driver who caused the accident was still sitting behind the
steering wheel complaining of head pain. While speaking to
her, police could detect an odor of alcohol. She stated she
had a couple glasses of wine. While medics removed her
from the vehicle, police again could detect the odor of alcohol
as she spoke to police and the medics. The police were
unable to have the driver perform field sobriety tests at the
scene based on her apparent injuries. She was transported to
UPMC Passavant. Charges are pending.
Chef’s Corner
Beef Short Ribs are Tall in Flavor
by John Rizzo
I
vividly remember my mother making a hot meal every night
for dinner while growing up. It would be a rare occasion if she
didn’t. Looking back, I’m sure it was very difficult for her to
offer variety while living within our means. There were a lot of
cuts of meat that were common and relatively inexpensive back
then, but seem to have disappeared over the years. One of them is
the short rib of beef. And like much else, they are making a comeback.
Short ribs have grown in popularity in the food service industry
over the past few years. I’m beginning to see them at upscale
restaurants and high end catered events as well.
So what exactly is a short rib? There are couple different cuts
that are called short ribs. One is the single bone English Cut, cut
from the chuck and the other is the flanken cut, from the belly. The
latter is cross cut over 3 bones, my personal preference. Regardless
of the cut, short ribs are not a naturally tender cut of beef; they contain
a fair amount of connective tissue and fat. Therefore, they have
to be braised (slow cooked in liquid) to become tender. Both cuts
are extremely flavorful and will provide plenty of rich stock for a
nice sauce or even a beef broth soup.
Asian Style Short Ribs Yield: 4
Short Ribs
Vegetable Oil
Soy Sauce
Wine Vinegar
Garlic Minced
Onions, Minced
4 lb.
2 TBL
3 / 4 Cup
3 TBL
1 TBL
1 / 3 Cup
Orange Zest
Cilantro, Fresh, Chopped
Brown Sugar
Water
Red Wine
Sesame Oil
1 tsp.
1 / 4 Cup
1 / 3 Cup
2 Cups
1 / 4 cup
2 TBL
Heat the oil in a large heavy saucepan and brown the short ribs
on both sides. It’s unlikely that all the short ribs will fit so you will
need to brown them in batches. Set all the browned beef aside and
add the remaining ingredients, with the exception of the sesame oil
to the saucepan. Bring the mixture to a boil and turn off the heat.
This is your braising liquid.
Layer the ribs in a large casserole or baking dish and cover with
the braising liquid. Cover the pan and bake at 300° F for
approximately 3 hours or until the ribs are very tender and falling
off the bones. At that time, remove all the beef from the pan and
strain the stock into a saucepan. Skim any grease off the top and let
the mixture simmer for about 15 minutes, stir in the sesame oil.
If you want a nice thin sauce, it’s ready to go as is. If you prefer
a little more texture, thicken it slightly with a slurry of cornstarch
and water.
Cut off any remaining fat and sinew from the ribs. Pour enough
sauce to coat the bottom of a meat platter and arrange the ribs on
top. Serve with rice and the remaining sauce.
located along the outside garage wall. The resident stated he believed
he had left the gas grill on since yesterday and the heat caused
nearby materials to catch fire. The fire was extinguished by Hampton
VFD.
Lady Rockets Take Local
Championship Title
by Emily Stitt
It’s Time to Register For The...
The freshmen that make up the Lady Rockets basketball
team have been playing together forever, or so it seems. The
freshmen girls on Hampton’s AAU team have been playing together
since 6 th grade. Ever since then, they have travelled together,
going all over Pittsburgh, looking
simply to play the game of basketball.
They’ve lost some games, and won some, but
along the way they’ve built a team chemistry
that is unlike almost any other. The way typical
AAU teams work is a collection of girls,
usually one or two of the best from their particular
district, form an All-Star team of sorts.
All true AAU teams are comprised of girls
who lead their school teams, making most
travel teams fierce foes. Hampton has struck
something truly unique. During the offseason,
all of Hampton’s freshmen girls play
together. As stated above, their record isn’t
always perfect. But the experiences they have
in the off-season make them a nearly unbeatable
team for schools in their section. Collectively,
as of the past two years, Hampton’s JV
basketball team has lost only two games. And
their chemistry is starting to pay off during
travel ball too: the Lady Rockets recently
won a tournament run by Basketball Stars of
America, taking place at North Allegheny
Senior High School. They overcame 4 different
teams in order to become champions, including some out-ofstate.
Hannah McAfoose, a forward, says, “We support each
other, especially when someone’s having an off day.” Stephanie
Murray, another forward, also comments on the close knit nature
of the team: “We’ve learned the meaning of a team working together
to win…we work on developing a team, not individual
players.” The Lady Rockets have been successful because of
their team-centered attitude.
Hampton High School Rowing Teammates
Row their Way to College
By Autumn Edmiston
F
rom learn to row day, national bronze medal winners and college
bound scholarship awardees, Jordan Bamrick and Kelley
Bittner have what it takes to be winners! This was the third
consecutive appearance for the Women’s Varsity Four boat to attend
the SRAA National Rowing Championship and the second consecutive
First Place win at Midwest Championship!
Their Women’s Varsity Four boat with teammates Emily Wilson,
Katie Dukovich, and Jessica Garver just won the Bronze Medal at the
National Scholastic Rowing Championship held Memorial Day weekend
in Camden, NJ. This is a tremendous accomplishment for Hampton
competing against the biggest and best teams in the nation.
A friend encouraged Jordan to try rowing at the teams “Learn to
Row” day four years ago. The friend didn’t like rowing, but Jordan
fell in love with the sport and has been rowing ever since. Bamrick
states, “Rowing forces a team to work together. When you're on the
water, you can't just walk away if you have a problem. You're forced
to work through the problem, and it creates a special bond with the
other people in your boat." It will be exciting to go to college where
my coach is also a coxswain (directing the boat) like me.”
Like Jordan, Kelley Bittner began her rowing career at “Learn to
Row” day. Prior to rowing she ran track, but really found her niche on
the water. Bittner enjoys the adrenaline rush she gets when rowing.
Bittner said, “As a 2 year Captain, it’s rewarding to see new rowers
grow. I hope to carry this with me as I move on to Robert Morris University
and look forward to the intensity of rowing at a college level.”
Bittner received a $12,000 per year scholarship to row for Robert
Morris University and Bamrick received a $2,000 per year athletic
scholarship from Canisius College in Buffalo New York. Hampton
hasn’t heard the last of this dynamic duo!
Alex Merz Chosen For Team
USA Roller Hockey Team
by Autumn Edmiston
Alex Merz, a sophomore
at Hampton High
School, began playing
hockey when he was 5
years old. For the past
eleven years he’s
honed his skills and
earned a spot on Team
USA Roller Hockey
and will be playing in
Bucacamuranga, Columbia
in July.
He was coached by
his father, his brother
Bryan, who coaches in
Namibia and South
Africa, and Dustin
Roux, who plays for
Team USA's men's
team and for Team
Reebok. At the urging
of John Roux, President
of the Amateur
Athletic Union, Alex
sent his hockey resume
to qualify for TEAM
USA. The officials then
interviewed his coaches,
and in Alex's case,
scouted his play in the
AIHL.
His work in the
PIRHL as a referee has
expanded Alex’s circle
of friends beyond Hampton
and has encompassed
a broad range of
ages.
When asked what’s
next, Alex responded, “I
hope to attend Pitt or
Robert Morris and play
in-line hockey. I want to
bring awareness to the
sport and make others
aware that professional
in-line hockey is as competitive
as ice hockey -
just not as expensive.”
Alex would like
to make the AIHL minor
team next year, and
hopes to play for whatever college he
attends. Wherever he ends up -
hockey will be in the cards for Alex.
Many of the sports in our culture are purely team or
sports. This spring the Hampton Track and
Young Talent Dazzles
at St. Ursula
A
n
outstanding performance of the
Broadway Junior show “Willy
Wonka, Jr” was given by 36 students
at St. Ursula School in grades three
to eight on May 10 th and 11 th in the St.
Ursula School Hall. “Willy Wonka, Junior”
is a Broadway, Jr. show based on Roald
Dahl's timeless story of the
world famous candy man and
his quest to find an heir to continue
his candy-making. The
story is a stage adaptation by
Leslie Briscusse and Timothy
A. McDonald of the novel
“Charlie and The Chocolate
Factory”. Words and music
are written by Leslie Bricusse
and Anthony Newley. Mrs.
Patty Cross creatively directed
and choreographed a very entertaining
production. Mrs.
Cross volunteered many hours
to put together this show which
was her twelfth quality full
musical production, so that St.
Local Students Win Film Contest
Students Win
Scholarship Contest
by Tina Harper
Kudos to Hampton High School Juniors Ashton Watts and
Melissa Gorham and 6 th grader Adam Watts for being winners
in the Take A Shot Contest sponsored by Steeltown Entertainment
Project. They were awarded $1,000 for being the Fan
Favorite in the 10-12
grade division for their
creation of a Pittsburghthemed
rap video.
"Take a Shot at Changing
the World" began as a
student "viral" video
competition that aimed to
educate a new generation
about the miraculous
efforts of Jonas Salk and
the Polio vaccine. In its
second year, "Take a
Shot" has expanded its
scope and asked students
to make short films about
social issues that are
meaningful to them or the
region.
Melissa commented, “We chose the topic of innovation in
Pittsburgh because Ashton will be moving to Tennessee and
wanted a last memory of the city. I’ve lived in Pittsburgh my
whole life and thought it would make me find out information I
might not have known otherwise.”
“Itch”
by Jan McCune
Often dog owners ask about
their dogs licking their feet or
scratching. Please understand
I’m not attempting to play doctor
but just from experience
there are a few things you can
try before you get into really
expensive tests. I always suggest
changing your dog’s food.
Many dogs that have been on
the same food for a long time
develop
intolerance
to the food.
It could be
one of the
ingredients
such as
poultry,
lamb, gluten,
etc.
Take a look
at the list of
ingredients
on the bag
of your cur-
Archie
rent dog
food. If the
main protein
is chicken, try lamb, or duck or
fish or vice versa. As with any
food, gradually change your
dog’s food. If you do it all at
once your dog may get an upset
stomach. Give your dog’s system
a chance to acclimate to the
new food. It can take several
weeks; this only applies to itching,
no other medical issue. It’s
amazing how a subtle change
can make a huge difference. If
your dog eats canned food and
sometimes has a little bout of
diarrhea or soft stool try putting
some canned pumpkin (not
pumpkin pie filling) in a bland
diet (boiled chicken or ground
meat and rice), about 1-
tablespoon.
Try it and you
should see
a difference.
Unfortunately,
this time of
year dogs
that have
allergies
are miserable.
Grass
allergies
are difficult
for dogs.
Lastly, always
remember,
if
your dog is
really sick get him or her to the
vet or emergency vet as soon as
possible. Senior dogs and puppies
that experience unchecked,
long bouts (more than 1 day) of
diarrhea can be fatal due to dehydration.
Celiac disease
(Continued from page 1)
Hampton High School. “With glutenfree
foods 242% more expensive, on
average, than their gluten counterparts,
there are people who need gluten-free
food, but cannot afford to buy
it.”
Runners can sign up for the race at
http://5kforceliac.wildapricot.org until
Friday, June 22 nd or on the day of the
race, starting at 7am at Hartwood
Acres. The races start at 9am and all
runners who pre-register will get a t-
shirt. There will be gluten-free snacks
for all runners, as well as people available
to answer questions about celiac
disease and gluten intolerance, including
an area where kids can ask other
kids about living with celiac disease.
Runners can also bring a gluten-free
food item, such as cereal, cookies,
crackers or pasta for the Pittsburgh
food pantries. This event is being
sponsored by the North Hills Community
Outreach and the Gluten Intolerance
Group (GIG).
Doctors estimate that 1 in 133
Americans have celiac disease and
over 97% are not diagnosed. Between
5 and 10% of all people may suffer
from a gluten sensitivity of some
form. There are over 300 symptoms
associated with celiac disease, including
bloating, weight loss, anemia,
chronic fatigue, weakness and bone
pain and the only known “cure” is
eating a gluten-free diet. For more
Depreciation Lands Museum
Adventures in
Pioneer Living Camp
The Depreciation Lands Museum, a living history
museum and village in Allison Park, just north of
Pittsburgh, will offer two sessions of its popular pioneer
living camp. The first session, for kids eight to
eleven, will take place June 18 through June 22, from
9 a.m. to noon. The second session, for kids eleven to
fourteen, will run from August 6 to August 9, from 6
to 8 p.m.
At pioneer camp, the year is 1792. Revolutionary
War soldiers have been purchasing land here in western
PA since 1783 with Depreciation Land certificates,
payment for their time in the military. The Iroquois
are still reluctant to give up their ancient hunting
grounds in the area, though, and now the land has
also been opened to homesteaders!
Campers will choose to experience life as an Indian,
pioneer, or soldier. Each day features time to
work on a craft, prepare foods, and learn the history,
lore, and skills of campers’ chosen group. The August
camp will focus in more detail on skills required to
survive and thrive during the early days of the Depreciation
Lands.
Tuition—$100 for non-members or $80 for members—includes
a costume to borrow for the week and
all materials. Slots fill quickly, so those interested
which contains billions of nerve fibers that send “well”
messages and life-giving energy to every part of their
body.
Interference to these nerve fibers can occur when
tiny spinal misalignments called vertebral subluxations
exist. Subluxations distort messages from the
brain to the rest of the body, leading to a state of disease,
and a lowered resistance to illness results when
the body is in a state of dis-ease. In effect, vertebral
subluxations rob the body of its optimal ability to heal
and repair itself from within, thus diminishing a child’s
capacity to express health and vitality.
Reasons for the cause of infant and childhood
subluxations include labor & delivery difficulties, such
as breeched births, C-sections, and the use of forceps
or vacuum extraction at birth. Slips and falls associated
with play-time, and sport-related injuries also play
a role in the occurrence of subluxation early on. In
fact, health problems in childhood, or even adulthood,
have been traced back to spinal damage at birth.
Warning signs of vertebral subluxation may include
fatigue, joint pains, “noisy” bones, frequent falling,
hyperactivity, postural imbalances (shoulder/
hips appear unlevel), and recurring illnesses such as
headaches, ear, nose, and throat infections. Chiropractic
care specifically corrects subluxation, thereby
restoring the body’s natural and optimal healing ability.
It is not necessarily a “treatment” for all of the
above named conditions, but an approach aimed at the
underlying cause in many cases.
The focus of my practice is to educate and encourage whole
family participation toward the goal of optimal health through
Chiropractic care. Recognizing that prevention is always the
best defense against the possibility of disease is critical for our
existing and future generations of truly healthy, drug-free
children.
