1. foundation<br />
Compacted Gravel Base: Place and uniformly compact the gravel<br />
base (0–_" crushed stone). Dense-graded aggregate base should be<br />
compacted using a vibratory plate compactor or hand tamper. The<br />
gravel base should extend beyond the Aspen Stone® product a min.<br />
<strong>of</strong> 6". For residential use 4" thick base is recommended. The top <strong>of</strong><br />
the leveling pad should be at least 2" below grade.<br />
Concrete Base or Concrete Pavers: Place Aspen Stone® block directly<br />
on a concrete base or concrete pavers. Make sure to fill the bottom<br />
<strong>of</strong> the fire put with a layer <strong>of</strong> sand (3" min.) to ensure proper drainage.<br />
Installing First Layer <strong>of</strong> Block: Use a center stake and lay out the Aspen<br />
Stone® units in a 14" radius from center stake to the back <strong>of</strong> the block.<br />
A circle with roughly a 28" inside diameter will require 11 Aspen Stone®<br />
blocks. There will be<br />
small gaps towards the<br />
back end <strong>of</strong> the block<br />
for ventilation purposes.<br />
Slight adjustment to the<br />
circle <strong>of</strong> blocks may be<br />
required for proper<br />
alignment.<br />
Finished Pit<br />
2. Building additional courses<br />
<strong>of</strong> block<br />
Make sure the first layer <strong>of</strong> block is perfectly<br />
leveled before building additional courses. Using<br />
concrete-approved adhesive, glue the second row<br />
<strong>of</strong> blocks to the first row. It is important to stagger<br />
the joints on every course. The center <strong>of</strong> each<br />
stone in one layer should be above the intersection<br />
<strong>of</strong> the stones below. There are enough stones<br />
to build 5 layers <strong>of</strong> block which would make the<br />
fire pit roughly 20" tall. **For packaging, five extra<br />
Aspen Stone® blocks are provided.<br />
3. installation <strong>of</strong> the fire bowl<br />
Once the fire pit is at the desired height, insert the<br />
fire bowl and the log support grill. Make sure to<br />
attach the ash guard to the base <strong>of</strong> the fire bowl.<br />
We recommend not gluing the fire bowl to the<br />
concrete block. Next place the spark screen on<br />
the fire bowl and attach the handle. A poker stick<br />
is included to remove or place the spark screen<br />
when the fire pit is in use. The spark screen handle<br />
becomes extremely hot when the fire pit is in use.<br />

using the fire dish, log support grill and the spark screen.<br />

1. CHOOSE PAVER<br />
Determine the area to be paved and how much material will be needed.<br />
Choose paver shape and pattern. Estimate quantity for paved area.<br />
2. EXCAVATE<br />
Have utilities marked and excavate area to be paved. The heavier the<br />
surface load, the deeper the base excavation. Be sure you have plans<br />
for relocating the soil and sod. Compact exposed base area.<br />
3. PREPARE BASE<br />
Install geotextile and base aggregates. Turn cloth up at sides <strong>of</strong> base.<br />
Place aggregates over cloth to required depth and compact to 95%<br />
solid. Set posts and stringlines for final base grades and finished<br />
paver elevations.<br />
4. SET ELEVATION<br />
Install C-33 concrete bedding sand and screed smooth for setting<br />
pavers to finished elevation. Allow 1/4" height for paver settling<br />
during placement.<br />
5. PLACE PAVERS<br />
Place pavers on screeded sand setting bed. Use string lines to keep<br />
pattern straight. Set hand-tight joints. Cut pavers in areas as needed to<br />
complete pattern.<br />
6. SET EDGING<br />
Set plastic edging tight against all exposed paver edges and spike firmly<br />
every 24" for walkways and 12" for driveways and curves. Edging works<br />
best if set on aggregate base after trimming sand setting bed flush with<br />
outside edge <strong>of</strong> pavers.<br />
7. SWEEP JOINTS<br />
Sweep dry C-33 concrete sand or other selected joint material into<br />
all joints and compact to complete interlock process. Refill to desired<br />
level after early weathering. Sweep up, clean up and enjoy your new<br />

Tools required: shovel, tape measure, carpenter’s level, stakes, string line, safety glasses,<br />
gloves, pencil, square, hand or machine compactor, hammer and chisel. You may also<br />
need a wheelbarrow and a circular saw with a masonry blade. Other supplies needed<br />
are 3/4" minus aggregate with fines for the base <strong>of</strong> the wall and 3/4" free-draining<br />
aggregate without fines for the wall backfill. You may also want to use sand as noted<br />
in the installation instructions.<br />
For larger installations <strong>of</strong> Diamond®, Highland Stone® and Diamond Pro® products,<br />
you will also need a skid loader and 4" flexible drain tile (polypropylene pipe).<br />
BUILDING A RADIUS<br />
To build a radius, drive a stake into the ground at<br />
the desired center <strong>of</strong> the radius. Attach a string and<br />
rotate it in a circle to mark the radius. Partial units<br />
may be required to maintain a running bond when<br />
building a radius.<br />
Note: For Diamond®, Highland® and Diamond Pro®<br />
straight units, the minimum top course measurement<br />
is 4' for an outside radius and 8' for an inside radius.<br />
Partial blocks may be required to maintain a running bond.<br />
For partial blocks, use a hammer and chisel on the score line<br />
and use the hammer to pound the chisel until the block splits.<br />
If the block does not split easily, you may need to use a circular<br />
saw with a masonry blade. Always wear eye protection when<br />
splitting or cutting blocks and read the instructions for power tools before operating.<br />
PREPARING & LAYING THE WALL<br />
1. Stake out the wall using a string line for straight sections and a garden<br />
hose for curved areas. Following this line, dig a level trench about 24"<br />
wide. For walls less than 4' high, make the trench deep enough to bury<br />
the first full course <strong>of</strong> block, plus the 6" compactible base. For walls over<br />
4' high, consult a qualified engineer for design information.<br />
2. Firmly compact the bottom <strong>of</strong> the trench, then place and compact the 6"<br />
<strong>of</strong> 3/4" aggregate with fines in the bottom <strong>of</strong> the trench. Quick tip: Spread<br />
a thin layer <strong>of</strong> sand over the compacted base. This will make it easier to level<br />
your first course <strong>of</strong> block.<br />
3. Using a hammer and chisel, remove the rear lip <strong>of</strong> each unit to be used<br />
in the base course <strong>of</strong> the wall. Place these blocks side by side on the<br />
compacted base and level the blocks in both directions using the<br />
carpenter’s level. For all Diamond Pro® units in the wall, fill each<br />
hollow core with the 3/4" aggregate without fines. For the Anchor®<br />
Highland Stone®, we recommend using all 18" wide units for the<br />
base course. Place the second course by setting units in a staggered<br />
relationship to the course below (running bond), pulling each unit<br />
forward until the rear lip is securely against the units below.<br />
4. After placing the second course, place the drain tile behind the first<br />
course <strong>of</strong> the block to allow water to drain from the backfill zone. Outlet<br />
the drain tile from the backfill to each low point <strong>of</strong> every 75' <strong>of</strong> wall length<br />
and around the ends <strong>of</strong> the wall. Backfill 12" behind the wall with the 3/4"<br />
aggregate without fines. Compact the backfill in 6" layers and fill all voids.<br />
Organic or clay type soil is not recommended for backfill material.<br />
