After scoring 24 points in the season-opener, junior center Mike Heck died in his sleep<br />

December 5 … senior center Doug Brookins finished fourth nationally with an .882 free<br />

throw percentage … the <strong>Bluejays</strong> lost to fourth-ranked Maryland at the NCAA Midwest<br />

Regional and also played in the Indiana Classic and the Far West Classic … senior guard<br />

Charles Butler shared the team’s MVP award with Brookins and earned the Tim Powers<br />

Memorial Trophy … sophomore guard Daryl Heeke shared the team’s Most Improved<br />

Player award with Cornell Smith after averaging 5.9 ppg … Smith averaged 9.1 points<br />

and 6.3 rebounds.<br />

The 1977-78 <strong>Bluejays</strong> included: Head Coach Tom Apke, Assistant Tom Brosnihan,<br />

Assistant Mike Caruso, Manager Camilo Alba, Rick Apke, Bill Butrym, Dan Clausen,<br />

Paul Dinkins, Randy Eccker, Jim Honz, John C. Johnson, Kevin Kuehl, Manager Larohn<br />

Latimer, Tim McConnell, Kevin McKenna, Dennis Rasmussen, Paul Trieschman, David<br />

Wesely.<br />

Missouri Valley Conference Champions<br />

19-9 Overall, 12-4 MVC (1st)<br />

After a 29-year absence, <strong>Creighton</strong> won the Missouri Valley Conference regular season<br />

and tournament titles in its first year back … the Jays clinched the regular season<br />

crown by defeating runner-up Southern Illinois, 62-56, in Carbondale on the last day of<br />

the regular season … <strong>Creighton</strong> earned a bye to the MVC Tournament championship<br />

game, where it downed Larry Bird’s Indiana State squad, 54-52, for the third-straight<br />

time … Rick Apke hit a turn-around jumper from the top of the key in the final seconds<br />

to seal the title … <strong>Creighton</strong> then fell 80-78 to DePaul in the first round of the NCAA<br />

Tournament at Wichita State.<br />

Defining Moment: <strong>Creighton</strong> led by 20 after 17 minutes, but could not hold on<br />

against a red-hot DePaul team that shot 76.9 percent in the second half.<br />

Key Stat: <strong>Creighton</strong> had 31 assists on 36 baskets, including 20-of-21 first-half<br />

buckets.<br />
