After scoring 24 points in the season-opener, junior center Mike Heck died in his sleep
December 5 … senior center Doug Brookins finished fourth nationally with an .882 free
throw percentage … the Bluejays lost to fourth-ranked Maryland at the NCAA Midwest
Regional and also played in the Indiana Classic and the Far West Classic … senior guard
Charles Butler shared the team’s MVP award with Brookins and earned the Tim Powers
Memorial Trophy … sophomore guard Daryl Heeke shared the team’s Most Improved
Player award with Cornell Smith after averaging 5.9 ppg … Smith averaged 9.1 points
and 6.3 rebounds.

Missouri Valley Conference Champions
19-9 Overall, 12-4 MVC (1st)
After a 29-year absence, Creighton won the Missouri Valley Conference regular season
and tournament titles in its first year back … the Jays clinched the regular season
crown by defeating runner-up Southern Illinois, 62-56, in Carbondale on the last day of
the regular season … Creighton earned a bye to the MVC Tournament championship
game, where it downed Larry Bird’s Indiana State squad, 54-52, for the third-straight
time … Rick Apke hit a turn-around jumper from the top of the key in the final seconds
to seal the title … Creighton then fell 80-78 to DePaul in the first round of the NCAA
Tournament at Wichita State.

Defining Moment: Creighton led by 20 after 17 minutes, but could not hold on
against a red-hot DePaul team that shot 76.9 percent in the second half.
Key Stat: Creighton had 31 assists on 36 baskets, including 20-of-21 first-half
buckets.
