Named organisms are grouped into larger 

and larger groups, based on shared 

characteristics. 

There is only one organisms at the species 

level, but the higher you go up on the 

taxonomic ranks, the more and more 

organisms become grouped together. 

Species being the smallest and Domain 

being the largest.

A good way to 

remember this order, is 

to remember the 

saying “Dumb King 

Phillip Came Over 

From Greece 

Singing” 

This saying should 

help in remembering 

the order of the ranks.

was Carl Linnaeus 

He laid the 

foundation of 

binomial 

nomenclature

All scientific names are in Latin, because Latin is 

considered a dead language 

Scientific names are done, in what is called binomial 

nomenclature, and that basically just translates to: 

two names 

The name is made up of a genus and specific epithet 

Remember genus is always capitalized, and when 

typing both names must be italicized, and if written 

out both words must be underlined separately

The reason we use scientific names, is to 

have a single universal name for a 

species 

Common names can be deceiving, 

because the same species can have 

different names in different areas

are called differently,
