Case History (continued): • The patient was given conservative therapy for an unspecified viral syndrome. He returned to the clinic several days later because all of his symptoms had worsened. One day later he was admitted to the hospital because he had become somnolent.
Case History (continued): • At that time, the exam showed a fever of 103 F and a blood pressure of 78/55. Dry mucous membranes and circumoral pallor were noted. The lung exam revealed bibasilar rales. He was lethargic but oriented. No focal neurologic deficits were found and no rash was appreciated.
