international laboratories. The <strong>Australian</strong> Synchrotron <strong>Research</strong> Program received a grant of $14.8M under the current MNRF<br />
program and it provides such access to synchrotron users. Some level of continued support will be required beyond 2007. ANSTO<br />
administers the ‘Access to <strong>Major</strong> <strong>Research</strong> <strong>Facilities</strong> Program’ that supports <strong>Australian</strong> access to international neutron sources,<br />
including ISIS at the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory (UK) and Institute Laue Langevin (France). Demand for use of these facilities<br />
will survive the commissioning of the RRR.<br />
Earth Sciences<br />
Most of the information about major facilities is available in the <strong>National</strong> Strategic Plan for the Geosciences, published in October<br />
2003. More work would need to be done to have a full accounting of personnel available in Australia, although this could be done<br />
relatively easily from the base of information that now exists.<br />
<strong>Major</strong> Geoscience <strong>Facilities</strong> and Personnel<br />
<strong>Major</strong> <strong>National</strong> <strong>Research</strong> <strong>Facilities</strong><br />
There are two MNRFs of particular relevance to the geosciences.<br />
<strong>Australian</strong> <strong>National</strong> Seismic Imaging Resource (ANSIR). ANSIR is an MNRF for seismically imaging the interior of the Earth<br />
for use by the resource industries, for environmental and groundwater research, for the mitigation of natural hazards, and for<br />
understanding of global geological processes. The facility facilitates access to a vibroseis reflection system, 28 portable<br />
broadband seismometers, 85 short-period recorders and associated equipment.<br />
<strong>Australian</strong> Computational Earth Systems Simulator (ACcESS). ACcESS aims to provide a computational virtual earth facility<br />
serving Australia’s national needs; empower the <strong>Australian</strong> earth science and industrial communities with a computational virtual<br />
laboratory facility with a never-before seen capacity that will fuel earth systems science and technology innovations, economic<br />
development, hazard management and environmental management through the 21st century; provide a national focal point for<br />
scientific and industrial earth systems simulations to form, together with climatic and oceanic research, a holistic earth simulation<br />
capability, and act as an international focal point within Australia in earth systems simulations, linking Australia with major<br />
overseas research programs and generating momentum in this emergent field within Australia.<br />
Other Key <strong>National</strong> <strong>Research</strong> <strong>Facilities</strong><br />
ANSTO facilities. The High Flux <strong>Australian</strong> Reactor (HIFAR), the <strong>Australian</strong> <strong>National</strong> Tandem <strong>Research</strong> Accelerator<br />
(ANTARES), the 3 MV Van de Graaf accelerator, and the Metal Vapour Vacuum Arc Iron Source (MEVVA) are national<br />
research facilities that are used for many applications, including the geosciences.<br />
<strong>Australian</strong> Synchrotron <strong>Research</strong> Program (ASRP). The <strong>Australian</strong> Synchrotron <strong>Research</strong> Program (ASRP) provides<br />
<strong>Australian</strong> researchers, including geoscientists, with access to state-of-the-art synchrotron radiation research capabilities at<br />
overseas synchrotron light source facilities. These are the <strong>Australian</strong> <strong>National</strong> Beamline Facility (ANBF) at the Photon Factory,<br />
Tsukuba Science City, Japan, and the Advanced Photon Source, at the Argonne <strong>National</strong> Laboratory in Chicago, USA.<br />
