2005 Plant Sale Feature: Groundcovers
Groundcovers are among the most versatile plants you can grow. These glorious plants will
add color and texture to any spot in your garden. Four of our favorites are:
Woodies
Hypericum calycinum ‘Brigadoon’ – This is a tough
groundcover for difficult locations. Whether it be full
sun or deep shade, or even parched dry soils, this
selection of the St. John’s wort will thrive. This quick
to colonize groundcover reaches only six inches tall.
The leaves during the summer are yellow and
remain evergreen in the fall. During the summer it is
adorned with large golden flowers.
Lonicera pileata ‘Moss Green’ – This is one of the
very best of the woody, ever-green groundcovers.
The plants are covered in dense, glossy, small dark
green leaves. It is perfect for ground-covering
underneath other shrubs. At the Scott Arboretum, we
use Lonicera pileata to spread beneath the naked
stems of Ilex verticillata and Clethra alnifolia.
Perennials
Epimedium grandiflorum ‘Lilafee’– At this year’s sale
we are offering several Epimediums. These have
become a favorite choice of the Arboretum staff for
dry shade. In April, wiry stems emerge with a striking
orange colored flower. The foliage of many
epimediums last well into the winter providing good
seasonal interest.
Hakonechloa macra ‘All Gold’ – This is one of the
very few grasses that will thrive in the shade. At
maturity, the graceful arching leaves reach about 12-
15 inches. The foliage is a vibrant pure yellow. In the
fall it turns shades of red and then an attractive
tawny in the fall. It colonizes making an effective
ground-cover in shade or part-sun.
For a complete list of groundcovers see pp. 47-48.
Limited quantities subject to availability.
unusual woodies, and winter gardening, compels him to visit and
study in arboretums and botanical gardens worldwide.
Andrew Bunting has been Curator at the Scott Arboretum since
1993. His past work experience at places like Chanticleer and the
Chicago Botanic Garden is reflected in all he does. This is Andrew’s
10 th Plant Sale and one of his favorite events.
Rick Colbert currently serves as Executive Director for the Tyler
Arboretum in Media, PA. Under his skilled direction, Rick has
the realities of life that we all need!
since 1984. He has been in charge of the Bond Rose Garden since
passionate garden designer. Look for her article about Aster
ericoides ‘Snow Flurry’ in the September issue of Horticulture.
Thomas Hawkins, present owner of the Gardener’s Arms Inc. in
Wallingford, has extensive “hands on” background in the Delaware
Valley, and is especially fascinated with diversity of plants available
in this region. This is no doubt fueled by his experience as a tropical
forester for the British government in Nepal and Central America.
specialist and teacher at Chanticleer. He has also worked
extensively in those areas at Longwood and Hillside Garden. His
PROCEEDS FROM THE PLANT SALE
The biennial Plant Sale is the largest fund-raiser of the Associates of the Scott Arboretum. This year, the funds generated
will be added to the Education Center & Greenhouse Building Fund.
To help meet our financial goals, we strive to sell only plants of the highest quality. The perennials, woodies, tropicals and
house plants we offer have been produced by growers whose standards and selections have impressed us.
Fall is a great time for planting, and with proper care, your plants will thrive. However, because we do not maintain plants
for sale on an on-going basis, and because we have no control over the care and tending of plants once they leave the
Sale, we are not able to offer replacement plants, exchanges or refunds.
If you have any questions about the specific needs of the plants you purchase, please be sure to discuss them with any
one of our Plant Experts who will be on hand throughout the Sale. Also be sure to ask our Experts about current planting
techniques.
