Spring comes to our new garden
Declan fiddling in the Heritage Garden
Newly sown grass has burst into life in the
Suffolk Punch Trust’s Heritage Garden, thanks
to the showers and sunshine that were so
welcome in April. The seed was sown by
Declan Foy using a portable, hand-operated
broadcast sowing machine called a fiddle. The
antique device got its name from the rhythmic,
side-to-side, fiddle-playing action of the sower
striding across the soil. A top fiddler could
broadcast grass or clover seed across two acres
of land in one hour.
Children from Kyson School have hand-sown
spring wheat in a bed, under the protective
gaze of a scarecrow. The wheat will be
harvested late summer. We hope the
Woodbridge tide mill will then grind it to flour
for us, so children can make their own bread!
Our Visitor Centre is now open until autumn. The café is run by Judith and Bill Vaudray
from the Alderton shop, with Sarah in charge. Come in for a snack and a chat: you won’t
pay the usual site entrance fee if you visit just the café.
