Smack CLINICS, DAY TRIPS ADDED to La VENTANA CLASSIC By Marina Chang The Old School/Big Air competition always draws a crowd. Photo Dallas McMahon Now in its fifth year, the La Ventana Classic and KiteXpo has expanded into a seven day event, running from January 17 through the 24. Founded by Palapas Ventana and supported by The Kiteboarder Magazine, proceeds from the 2010 event will once again benefit the local schools and community and will include an 11-mile kiteboard/windsurf island crossing race, course racing finals, an 11-mile island crossing SUP race, a one and two-mile SUP race, SUP relay races, big air and old school trick competitions, and a four-day free demo expo of kite and SUP gear. From January 17-19, informal demos and day trips to the coast or island will be offered. So far, Elevation Kiteboarding’s Marie Leclerc and the Gorge’s Laura Maher have teamed up to offer a girls’ only day at the beach on Isla Ceralvo. For all levels, the clinic will have North and Slingshot demo gear, offer tips from the trainer kite to strapless riding, do a pre-run for the island race, and finish with happy hour at Baja Joe’s. Mark “2dog” has also teamed up with Caution’s Brendan Richards to offer a day trip and wave clinic at the coast. If the forecast is not good for the coast, they will do a strapless (surf and/or skim) clinic in La Ventana and will also have Caution and North gear available for demo. Collegiate Kiteboarding Tour Expands to West Coast By Matt Sexton | Photo Dallas McMahon Founded in 2005 by several college students and key industry members including Slingshot and Dakine, the Collegiate Kiteboarding Association (CKA) has grown into a viable organization consisting of 21 universities with 12 events annually. New for the 2009/2010 season is the start of the West Coast Tour with four stops on the California coast running from October through April. The winners of the West Coast and Southeast regional tours will battle it out in the Collegiate Nationals finals to be held in Corpus Christi, Texas, in May. While discussing the future of kiteboard racing at the World Championships in San Francisco this summer, Joe Kool and Brian Schenck drafted a proclamation forming the Skyline Yacht Club. The SYC will host Snowkite Course Races that will lead snowkite racing towards ISAF standards. The Skyline Yacht Club will be based out of the infamous Triangle Bar in Mt. Pleasant, Utah. Racing continues to grow and Seattle now has a race series, thanks to Andrew and Adam Koch. Starting in October, the races will be held at Magnuson Park and supported by the Seattle Yacht Club (SYC) with use of the SYC race committee boats. The SYC is very excited about the opportunity and if they see potential, the long term goal is to get a Seattle kiteboard race series up and running in 2010.
