‘Hydraulic hoses are
highly effective in their
daily tasks – it is only
when something goes
wrong that serious
problems can occur’
It is for these reasons that the
British Fluid power Association (BFpA)
and British Fluid power Distributors
Association (BFpDA) have established
their hose training courses: The
Foundation course in working Safely
with Hydraulic Hose and connectors
and The Hose Assembly Skills Training
programme. The first is a one-day course
that clearly explains how individuals
can work more safely with hose and
related equipment. The second covers
everything from hose assembly routing
and installation and hose management.
accreditation
when sourcing or replacing hydraulic
hose, we also highly recommend that the
entrusted party is a member of the BFpA/
BFpDA’s Hose Accreditation Scheme.
This scheme sets a high benchmark in
quality by ensuring that when customers
receive hose assemblies from a member of
the scheme, they know that the supplier’s
workshop and staff have been inspected
for quality and compliance before being
awarded the Approved Hose Assemblies
mark.
In summary, when working with
hydraulic hoses and fittings, make sure
your staff, or personnel from an outsource
party, are fully aware of the required
standards of installation and replacement,
and don’t accept anything but equipment
of the highest quality. After all, when the
efficiency of your plant and equipment,
as well as the health and safety of the
workforce or general public is at stake,
only the best product, training and service
provision is acceptable.
One final point, if you are ever
tempted to recommend the re-ending of a
failed hose – think again.
Ian Morris is a director of the British Fluid
Power Association.
