INTERNSHIP OPPORTUNITIES AT FRONTEX<br />

The European Agency for the Management of Operational Cooperation at the<br />

External Borders of the Member States of the European Union (<strong>Frontex</strong>) was<br />

created to coordinate operational cooperation between Member States in the field<br />

of management of external borders; assist Member States in the training of<br />

national border guards, including the establishment of common training standards;<br />

carry out risk analyses; follow up the development of research relevant to the<br />

control and surveillance of external borders; assist Member States in circumstances<br />

requiring increased technical and operational assistance at the external borders,<br />

and to provide Member States with the necessary support in organizing joint return<br />

operations.<br />

General provisions<br />

<strong>Frontex</strong> is happy to offer internship opportunities. The concept of internship is<br />

considered as a partnership between <strong>Frontex</strong> and the intern and there must be a<br />

defined benefit for both the agency and the intern. By establishing an internship<br />

programme, <strong>Frontex</strong> provides an opportunity to gain practical working experience<br />

of cooperation in the field of external borders of the European Union, to acquire<br />

knowledge of the European Union, its institutions and activities and to put into<br />

practice knowledge acquired during studies or professional careers. <strong>Frontex</strong> shall<br />

benefit from the internship by receiving the input of young or experienced staff<br />

that can transfer their national experience, views and up-to-date academic<br />

knowledge and competence into <strong>Frontex</strong>’s everyday and planned work.<br />

<strong>Frontex</strong> welcomes applications from highly motivated candidates from a range of<br />

educational and professional backgrounds to contribute to the work of the agency<br />

in line with their respective expertise and specific interests.<br />

Eligibility<br />

Any candidate who meets the following minimum eligibility criteria may apply for<br />

an internship at <strong>Frontex</strong>:<br />

- Nationality – to be nationals of the Member States of the European Union,<br />

Schengen associated countries or candidate countries benefiting from a preaccession<br />

strategy<br />

- Education – to have completed at least three years (six semesters) of higher<br />

education (university education, studies equivalent to university or typical internal<br />

police/law enforcement studies) on the date of sending the application<br />

- Languages – to have very good, proven knowledge of the working language of<br />

<strong>Frontex</strong> (English) at the level B2 or higher.<br />

Note: Prior internships in EU bodies and work experience – <strong>Internships</strong> are<br />

usually open to candidates who have not yet benefited from any kind of internship<br />

in European institutions, agencies or bodies and who have not yet had the<br />

possibility to have their first employment after graduation. If justified for the<br />

benefit of service, <strong>Frontex</strong> may accept applications from candidates having already<br />

interned at other EU institutions or already having work experience in relevant<br />

fields, if they seem to present added value for the agency.<br />

Basic conditions<br />

Duration of internship and working conditions<br />

<strong>Internships</strong> shall be granted for a minimum period of 2 months and a maximum<br />

period of 6 months.<br />

Interns shall keep the same working hours and have the same public holidays as<br />

<strong>Frontex</strong> staff.<br />

During the internship period, the intern shall be entitled to two days of leave per<br />

month, acquired pro rata to the months worked.<br />

Interns shall be required to comply with the internal rules governing the<br />

functioning of <strong>Frontex</strong>, in particular the rules concerning security and<br />

confidentiality.<br />

If the intern’s participation in a particular project during the internship shall<br />

involve access to sensitive <strong>Frontex</strong> information, only candidates holding security<br />

clearance from the Member States might be accepted for such internship.<br />

Financial matters<br />

Internship will be awarded a monthly grant of EUR 500. Interns who are non<br />

residents of Warsaw or its environs (who will need to relocate from their current<br />

place of residence in order to take up the internship) in addition to the grant shall<br />

be entitled to a monthly allowance intended to cover part of the living costs in<br />

Warsaw - EUR 300 and a lump sum covering the travel expenses incurred at the<br />

beginning and at the end of the internship – EUR 100 for one-way trip. The above<br />

mentioned payments shall be calculated in EUR and paid in PLN, according to the<br />

<strong>Info</strong>rEuro monthly exchange rate.<br />

<strong>Frontex</strong> does not cover sickness or accident insurance. The intern is responsible for<br />

arranging and paying for such insurance prior to the start of the internship at<br />

<strong>Frontex</strong>.<br />

Status and future employment at <strong>Frontex</strong><br />

Admission to the internship programme at <strong>Frontex</strong> does not award to the<br />

participants the status of other servants of the Communities nor does it entail any<br />

right or priority with regard to an appointment in the services of <strong>Frontex</strong>.<br />

Furthermore, in order to assure the highest standards of transparency the intern<br />

shall not be eligible to participate in any <strong>Frontex</strong> recruitment process for three<br />

months after the end of the internship.<br />

Application instructions<br />

All applications will be subject to pre-selection taking into account the applicant’s<br />

profile and the organisational needs and requirements.<br />

In order for an application to be considered valid, the following requirements shall<br />

be fulfilled:<br />

• candidates should submit their application using the Standard <strong>Frontex</strong><br />

Internship Application form<br />

• candidates should clearly state in their application:<br />

- which entity 1 they would like to join for their internship or which of the<br />

existing <strong>Frontex</strong> projects or of which of the listed tasks they would like to<br />

perform or suggest their own project they would like to implement,<br />

- what their experience or competence is in the area concerned,<br />

- what skills they would like to develop<br />

- with which particular skills and ideas they can contribute to the work of the<br />

entity concerned 2 .<br />

• the application shall be signed by the candidate in order to confirm his/her<br />

compliance with the eligibility criteria for the internship (the electronic<br />

signature shall be applied or a scanned version of the document with signature<br />

shall be attached)<br />

Applications that do not meet the eligibility criteria or are incorrectly submitted<br />

will be rejected.<br />

Selection process<br />

<strong>Frontex</strong> makes a selection of interns on the basis of the detailed screening of the<br />

received application forms. In addition, candidates may be contacted by <strong>Frontex</strong><br />

over the phone in order to discuss their experience and mutual expectations prior<br />

to the final selection decision.<br />

Successful candidates will be informed of the dates and rules governing the<br />

internship.<br />

The processing of personal data by <strong>Frontex</strong> is governed by Regulation (EC) N°<br />

45/2001. By submitting an application for an internship, the applicant is<br />

understood, in the sense of Article 5 (d) of the Regulation, to have given his/her<br />

consent to the processing of the personal data contained in the application form<br />

and the supporting documents enclosed therewith. The provision of information<br />

requested in the application form and the supporting documents is obligatory.<br />

Incomplete applications will be excluded from the selection. The personal data in<br />

question is collected by <strong>Frontex</strong> for the sole purpose of the selection of interns.<br />
