TEACHERS OFFER PERSPECTIVES<br />

ON EDUCATE PROGRAMS’ VALUE<br />

For nearly eight years, with funding from Abbott<br />

Laboratories, AbbVie, Archer Daniels Midland,<br />

Baxter, DuPont Pioneer, Hospira and Takeda<br />

Pharmaceuticals, the EDUCATE Center of the iBIO<br />

Institute has provided TalentSparks programming<br />

for Illinois teachers. TalentSparks provides teacher<br />

professional development workshops focused on<br />

novel, standards-aligned curriculum that inspires<br />

student achievement by encouraging hands-on,<br />

inquiry-based exploration of real-world problems.<br />

Independent external evaluation data show<br />

TalentSparks programs create statistically significant<br />

average content gains of nine percentage points in<br />

science and math for teachers and their students.<br />

More than 700 teachers and 60,000 students have<br />

benefited from TalentSparks programming.<br />

Recently, through a grant from the Astellas USA<br />

Foundation, EDUCATE developed the Stellar<br />

Girls after-school STEM (science, technology,<br />

engineering, mathematics) program for girls in<br />

grades four through eight, based on published<br />

research demonstrating that girls begin eliminating<br />

STEM fields as career choices in the third and fourth<br />

grades. More than 200 girls have participated in<br />

this program in the past two years. Fifth- and sixthgrade<br />

girls who participated in Stellar Girls showed<br />

statistically significant gains for science and math<br />

content. Although the sample size was small,<br />

these girls showed 16 percentage-point gains<br />

from pre- to post-tests.<br />

While these metrics are impressive and demonstrate<br />

high-quality programming, just like any statistic<br />

seeking significance, they can only describe what<br />

is common to all. They are unable to define the<br />

seismic impact a subtle shift in teaching practices<br />

can have for a teacher and the scores of students<br />

that benefit from this shift.<br />

We invited four teachers involved in EDUCATE<br />

Programming to reflect on how TalentSparks or<br />

Stellar Girls programs have transformed teaching<br />

and learning in their classrooms and impacted<br />

their students.<br />

I feel that the Stellar Girls programming is engaging<br />

girls who for one reason or another loved science<br />

when they were younger, but who felt that they<br />

were not as capable at science and math as they<br />

should be as middle-schoolers. In Stellar Girls, they<br />

engage with the STEM projects enthusiastically and<br />

apply math and critical-thinking skills excitedly. They<br />
