SRINAGAR: THE HOST CITY
Srinagar, the summer capital of Jammu and Kashmir state, is a picturesque
destination located in the Kashmir valley of the Republic of India. Freshwater
lakes and houseboats, dry fruits, Chinar trees and traditional Kashmiri
handicrafts are the highlights of the region. Dal, the world famous fresh water
lake dots the landscape of this largest urban centre in the lap of Himalayas.
Mughal Emperor, Jehangir, was so astounded by the beauty of Srinagar that
he exclaimed 'GAR FIRDAUS, BAROYE ZAMIN AST, HAMIN ASTO, HAMIN
ASTO, HAMIN AST', which means 'If there is a heaven on earth, it's here, it's
here, it's here'. Jhelum River flows through Srinagar, the city of natural wealth
and is often referred to as the land of lakes and gardens owing to the
abundance of both.
HOW TO REACH SRINAGAR
Air: Srinagar is well connected by air with Indira Gandhi International Airport,
New Delhi and other major cities of the country. Daily flights are running to
and fro operated by Indian Airlines, Jet Airways, Indigo, GoAir, Spice Jet, etc.
Rail: Srinagar does not have any railway station. The nearest railhead is
Jammu Tawi, which is 305 km from Srinagar.
Road: Srinagar is connected by road to important places of India, like
Chandigarh (630 km), Delhi (876 km), Jammu (298 km) etc.
ABOUT THE HOST ORGANIZATION
Situated at Hazratbal, an idyllic area on the western side of the magnificent
Dal Lake of Srinagar, the University of Kashmir is spread over 263 acres of
lush green land . The unique combination of lake and mountain scenery and
serene ambience provide a highly congenial atmosphere for the philosopher's
contemplation and the scientist's research in the university.
Since 1956, this academic institution has come a long way and has developed
into a multi-faculty University, imparting education in various subjects in the
Faculty of Arts, Languages, Natural Sciences, Social Sciences, Education,
Commerce, Law, Medicine, Dental Surgery, Engineering, Music and Fine Arts
and Non-formal Education, all manned by academics with considerable
teaching and research experience, some of whom occupy places of eminence
in the academic world. Besides the departmental libraries, the University has
a central library, called “Iqbal Library” with a vast collection of books,
leading national and international journals and magazines and internet
facility. The location of the library, a wonderful edifice, at a walking distance
from the various departments of the University, renders it easily accessible to
teachers, research scholars and students of the University.
University has earned a name for itself as a leading educational institution
and is fast developing as an academic hub for traditional as well as
professional courses. Presently, it offers education and research
programmes through 38 Post Graduate Departments and Directorate of
Distance Education (DDE) at its main campus at Srinagar and satellite
campuses at Anantnag, Baramulla, Kupwara, Kargil and Leh disseminating
knowledge in various streams. About 150 colleges of general education,
engineering, technology, computer science and management spread over 12
districts of J & K state are affiliated to this university.
ABOUT THE ORGANISING DEPARTMENT
The Department of Geography and Regional Development was established in
1979 with the objective to play an important role in planning and development
of the state of Jammu & Kashmir. The Department has set up a state of the art
Remote Sensing and GIS (Geographic Information System), Advanced Land
Surveying and Digital Cartography laboratories equipped all the requisite
accessories including GPS, Total Station, RS/GIS softwares, Smart Boards, PCs
etc. The laboratories have been established with financial support from the
Department of Science and Technology, Government of India under their DST-
FIST Support programme.
The Department has recently been inducted by University Grants
Commission for Financial Support under their UGC-SAP Programme at the
level of DRS-I. The Department has the distinction of being the 5th
Geography Department in the country to be awarded both DST-FIST and
UGC-SAP. Over the years, the department has made rapid strides in
academics and at present it has over 100 students distributed over several
programmes such as M.A/M.Sc Geography, PG Diploma in Disaster
Management, M.Phil and Ph.D.
ABOUT INTERNATIONAL GEOGRAPHICAL UNION (IGU)
The International Geographical Union (IGU) is an international geographical
society. The first International Geographical Congress was held in Antwerp
in 1871. Subsequent meetings led to the establishment of the permanent
organization in Brussels, Belgium, in 1922. The Union has 40 Commissions and
four task forces. The commissions range from Applied Geography, Gender
Geography, Marine Geography, Biogeography & Biodiversity, Land Use &
Land Cover Change as well as Landscape Analysis and Water
Sustainability. IGU adheres to the International Council for Science (ICSU)
and the International Social Science Council (ISSC), which it recognizes as
coordinating bodies for the international organization of science. Besides
promoting the study of geographical problems, IGU initiate and co-ordinate
geographical research requiring international co-operation and to promote
its scientific discussion by way of organizing regional / international
meetings/seminars/conferences/symposia related to the objectives of the
Union.
LOCAL HOSPITALITY
Registered participants will be provided all hospitality during their stay at
Srinagar during the conference days. Accommodation for outstation
participants will be arranged in the University Guest House/Hostels/ House
Boats on request and based on the availability. Those interested in
accommodation in city hotels on actual payment basis should request for
the same in advance. Delegates coming with members of family should
request accommodation in the city hotels on payment basis. Participants
should arrange for their travel from their own resources. However, the
organizing committee may reimburse travel expenses for a limited number
of participants from India, depending upon the availability of funds.
Cultural programmes and sight-seeing tour (on demand) for participants
are also planned to be arranged to nearby places.
THRUST AREAS OF THE CONFERENCE
The over-exploitation of some of the important earth resources like land
and water has led to a number of environment related problems world
over. At the same time, the natural and anthropogenic activities has lead to
increase of geohazards around the globe, with the result the sustainability
of different earth resources are in a threat. In this context, the relevance of
geohazards and sustainability of earth resources for human survival has
become a major international issue as scientific evidence builds on the
global health implications of resource loss. This issue is closely linked with
the issue of climate change and risks due to climate change are associated
with fast degradation of mountain environment which are the main source
of different resources like glaciers, water, forests, soil, medicinal plants, etc.
Holistic natural resource based spatio-temporal planning, development and
management is essential to save the degraded ecosystem for sustainable
resource management. This International Conference aims to highlight the
various environmental problems associated with development and
changing climatic scenarios. The problem of climate change and ensuing
transformations that are to manifest in various sectors of human life on the
earth is an important area where the Geo-spatial tools can play a vital role.
Environmental perspectives and the scientific approaches including modern
technologies are bringing spatial solutions to environmental and societal
problems. Different geo-spatial tools like Remote Sensing, GIS and GPS
helps in assessing the results of various environmental problems both
physical and social. This conference welcomes all geographers, scientists,
hydrologists, academicians, researchers, technologists, environmentalists,
engineers, planners, policy makers, social workers, research students and
other interested professionals from geography and its allied fields to share
their research experiences.

The academic session will consists of invited/plenary talk and contributed
paper presentations.
CALL FOR PAPERS
There shall be poster as well as oral presentation in the conference.
Intending authors are requested to submit their original research
contribution in the form of abstract (not exceeding 500 words) by email to
the Organizing Secretary on or before March, 15, 2014. The abstract of the
paper should be typed with double space Times New Roman (12 Font Size)
with title of the paper, name of the author(s), affiliation, email address
besides the content. Author(s) will be informed by email about the
acceptance of their abstracts by March, 31, 2014. Thereafter, the contributors
are requested to send their full papers and registration fee by April 20, 2014.
Full paper in MS Word format should reach to the Organizing Secretary by
e-mail attachment. Research scholars must send their abstract/full paper
through H.o.D/Principal/Chairman. The accepted papers will be published
as full text in the conference proceedings.
