in the united states alone, there are more
than 2 million students enrolled in nearly
7,300 Catholic schools. the theme for this
year’s national Catholic school week was:
“Faith•Knowledge• Discipline•Morals:
Dividends for Life”
to honor retiring bishop patrick Cooney,
GtACs students, families, and staff
donated $1,217 to his education
endowment fund for the northern
Michigan Catholic Foundation.
SPRING 2010
was part of his ordination on December 1, 2009. the self-proclaimed “Rookie
bishop” won the hearts of students by invoking his authority to grant a day off
on the Monday following the Mass. students and families honored the bishop
by presenting him with a basket full of prayers and welcome messages. After
the Mass, st. Francis alumna, Miriam pico, continued the celebration by leading
everyone in praise music.
“ For anyone pessimistic about the state of the Church in Northern Michigan, I would
recommend a visit to the Grand Traverse Area Catholic Schools. My time at GTACS
during Catholic Schools Week confirmed for me the potential that our schools have to
produce young men and women who are well-equipped with the love of truth and the
appreciation of beauty that has long distinguished Catholic scholarship and imagination.
The students impressed me by their knowledge of the Faith and are clearly benefiting
from the guidance and example of a faculty and administration that is passionately and
authentically Catholic. I have no doubt that the selfless sacrifices parents are making
today in favor of a Christ-centered education for their children are going to bear great
fruit for the Church in the future. I am already looking forward to my next visit.”
REFLECTIONS FROM FATHER BILL
This past July 15th, I assumed my present position as Chaplain to the Grand Traverse Area Catholic
School System. Where has the time gone since then? The days and weeks have flown by. Well, as the
saying goes, that is the way it is supposed to be when you are having fun!
I feel so privileged to have this opportunity. I love being here! Students, staff and parents have all made me
feel so welcome. As Chaplain, I am able to be in all four schools including chapel, classrooms, lunch rooms
and even the playground. I even have an office at each school. To those of you who know the story at Holy
Angels, I will be on the slide again in the spring (I was the first one down it when it was dedicated in 2002).
I have truly enjoyed embracing school life and being with the students – from being an honorary drum
major, to being on Ford Field with the football team when they won the State Championship, to even having
a role in this year’s high school musical, Bye Bye Birdie, as the voice of Ed Sullivan. For those of you who
remember the real Ed Sullivan, he might have said it like this: It was a great, great, shoooooooooooowww!
The ultimate joy, of course, is simply being a priest. Growing up, I did not attend a Catholic school. As I
talk with students and listen to their stories, I feel so appreciative to be part of Catholic school life. At the
same time, I emphasize the backbone of our school system – the parish to which you belong. We should all
be reminded that we must be active in our parish and give back. Thank you for your continued support of
Catholic education.
ACT SCORES
COLLEGE BOUND SF GRADUATES
Did you know that nearly 100% of the students in the sF class of 2009 are pursuing
post-secondary education?
Did you know that this class was offered over $3 million in scholarships & awards
based on academic, athletic, and artistic abilities?
Did you know that five students from the sF class of 2009 were accepted into
fine arts programs throughout the country?
“ After just a few shorts weeks at Notre Dame, one thing became clear – what you learn in
high school matters. After my meeting to declare my intentions for next year, even my advisor
commented on how well my high school had prepared me for my transition to Notre Dame.”
Julie Doherty, SF Class of 2009, Valedictorian
Notre Dame Dean’s List – Fall 2009 Semester
“ St. Francis really helped prepare me for the amount of coursework and the level of academics
at the University of Michigan.”
Adam Karpinski, SF Class of 2009
“
From my first semester in college, it was immediately apparent how fortunate I was to have
studied at St. Francis High School. Not only did I enter college with a few credits already
accumulated, but I felt, and still feel, extremely prepared. The level of academic preparation
provided at St. Francis is excellent, with a curriculum parallel to that of many college-level
courses. While in high school, I was able to participate fully in the marching band, choir and
drama. Being active in so many areas of the arts, as well as being prepared academically,
not only provided me with great opportunities, but I knew exactly what I wanted to do before
I graduated. My experience at St. Francis contributed to helping me establish a hard-working
mentality to get to where I am headed as a person, in my academic life, and in the theatrical
life I am determined to pursue.”
GREAT THINGS HAPPENING AT GTACS
St. Francis High School presented Bye Bye Birdie on
six different dates in February under the direction of
Jenn Miles, Whitney richardson, and Holly Olszewski.
The show had record attendance with more than
1,500 people and also boasted the largest cast, crew,
and pit in the past four years with 60 high school and
middle school students (even Father Bill lipscomb had
a role!) This year’s cast was pleased to revitalize the
show, which was originally performed in 1981 at
St. Francis High School. The story, set in 1959, is a
satire and told with the fondest affection for an Elvis-type character, Conrad Birdie,
who is about to be drafted into the army. The show was a crowd pleaser and was fun
for the whole family. Save the date of February 2011 for the next St. Francis musical
production. Musical name to be announced in the fall of 2010.
The St. Francis Gladiator Football Team won the State Championship at Ford Field by defeating
Hudson 42-8 on November 28th. This was the 8th State Championship title and back-to-back
state champions for 2008 and 2009. The team’s theme this year was based on proverbs 27:17,
“Iron sharpens iron, so one man sharpens another.”
A school history point of interest: St. Francis did have back-to-back football championships in
1973 and 1974, but there was not a “play-off system” in place. State champions were voted on by
the Associated press. The 1973 team was coached by the late Waldo Keating and the 1974 team
was coached by larry Sellers. MHSAA playoffs did not begin until 1975. (Source: Faith and
WASHINGTON
in May 2009, GtACs superintendent, Mike buell,
accepted an invitation to meet with united states
senate leaders and experts to discuss promoting
healthy eating habits and increasing physical activity
in students. the meeting was held in washington
D.C. in the united states Capitol, and Mr.
buell was one of fifteen leaders from around the
country who was invited to address a senate steering
and outreach committee. this invitation was
in response to GtACs’ Life balance initiative (Lbi)
developed in 2007. GtACs made an important
commitment to combat childhood obesity and to
provide our students with skills and resources that
can lead to a lifetime of good habits by providing
healthy, unprocessed, fresh and whole foods and
promoting farm to school buying structure that
supports local producers.
superintendent buell commented,
“i was honored to
travel to washington D.C.
to share with committee
members key components
of GtACs’ Life balance
initiative. our students experience
healthy lunches every day with fresh fruits
and vegetables and support local agriculture. i am
very pleased that our Catholic schools in northern
Holy angels and Immaculate
Conception Students raise
almost $2,000 in six weeks
on november 24, 2009, students
at holy Angels and immaculate
Conception elementary schools
left behind their Catholic school
uniforms and arrived to school in their pajamas
as a reward for collecting almost 20,000 box
tops for education. A spirited contest of clipping
cardboard labels off of qualifying products ran
for a six week period. each label was worth ten
cents to the school. in a typical year, students
raise about $500. however, in the six week contest,
holy Angels brought in 9,936 box tops and
immaculate Conception 9,206 box tops. holy
Angels parent and box top Coordinator, bridget
thuente remarked, “the contest was very close,
and the competition was very intense -- many
families who had children at both schools had
very heated discussions on which child got to
bring in box tops for their school! the children
put their hearts and souls into this contest. i
couldn’t walk through the hallways at school
without having kids running up to me, telling me
proudly how many box tops they collected. the
competition truly took on a life of its own! it was
a fun way in a tough economy to earn money
for our schools.” A check was presented for
$1,914.20 to the elementary school principals,
Mr. Matt bauman (immaculate Conception) and
Mrs. Janet troppman (holy Angels). interested
STEWARDS OF CREATION
the photo at right is from a stewards of Creation prayer retreat to the Companions of Christ which is at
the Lamb Catholic Retreat Center in paradise, Michigan. the students built eight foot tall crosses and
carried them more than a mile to discover the literal meaning of “carrying our crosses,” and experiencing
just a hint of Christ’s way of the Cross. Arriving on “prayer hill” with their crosses, the students
nailed to the cross lists of the ways they separate themselves from God. oh, and it was rainy and cold!
stewards of Creation was formed to provide opportunities for st. Francis’ young men and women to
explore, experience, and preserve God’s creation in nature. As a school-sponsored, Christ-centered
group, all activities include scripture study, prayer, and reflection on the purpose and stewardship of
God’s great blessings in our natural world. Activities include a spring break prayer retreat to the Great
smoky Mountains national park, camping, hiking, backpacking, canoeing, adopt-a-park, outdoor service
MAKING A DIFFERENCE IN OUR REGION
More than three tons of food were collected at the Give it Away Now! Food Drive in October. parish families
and students worked together with the goal of collecting enough food to fill a 70 passenger school bus. The effort
resulted in an amazing 6,725 pounds of food being collected for the Father Fred Foundation food pantry.
Spearheaded by the lIFE TEEN UNDErGrOUND youth group, the Give it Away Now! Food Drive provided
an opportunity to work as one Catholic family to accomplish a corporal work of mercy by feeding the hungry.
K - 5TH GRADERS SPREAD CHRISTMAS CHEER BY
CONTINUING A COMMUNITY TRADITION
holy Angels Kindergarten-2nd graders and immaculate conception 3rd-5th Graders spread
christmas cheer on Friday, December 18th at the Traverse city state Theatre. students brought
500 toys to donate to children in our community. The toys were delivered by the Traverse city
Fire Department Toy program. in return, the state Theatre showed a free christmas movie to
these children to thank them for their donations.
the toy collection by tC Firefighters Local 646 has
been a community tradition for more than 50 years.
it has been a dream of immaculate Conception 4th
grade teacher, Miss Jan Cleland, to get students
involved in this tradition as it was part of her fondest
childhood memories. her father, Al Cleland, was a firefighter
and later a captain. Miss Cleland remarked, “As
a child in the 1960s, i remember walking down to the
fire station from st. Francis school and seeing all of the
toys. they were beautiful and looked new again. the
fire department would pick a saturday before Christmas
to collect all of the toys at the state theatre. the admission
to the movie was a donated toy. parents would pull up in front of the theatre and children would
jump out with their toys in hand. it was such a great feeling of love and everyone had such a great time.
i have been wondering for awhile if we could bring that tradition back. this is a dream come true for me
to bring back an event that made so many children happy to know that they had helped another child
and reinforce the lesson that it is truly better to give than receive. it has been so heart warming to see
the excitement of our local firefighters, state theatre staff, GtACs teachers, and students. everyone has
been amazing, and it’s all for the love of children in our community. i am so pleased that we can partner
with the state theatre and the local fire department for the second year of restoring this tradition.”
