UNDERGRADUATE STUDENTS

What is an Undergraduate
Research Award?
Successful students will work on a research
project with a UOIT faculty member.
Awardees will receive $4,500 to $6,000 for 12 to
16 weeks (May – August) of full-time research.
There is only one application process for all
UOIT centrally administered awards. Through
this one process, you will be considered for all
awards for which you are eligible.

Am I eligible to apply?
To apply for an award, students must:
be a Canadian citizen or permanent resident of
Canada; international students are eligible for
the UOIT STAR only
be registered (at the time of application) as a
full or part-time student in a bachelor's degree
program; and
have obtained, over the previous years of
study, a cumulative average of at least a B-
(70%, 2.7 grade points).

Enter the Student Section of the website
Choose a RESEARCH PROJECT
Applicants must apply to work on a summer
project from the list provided
Complete your APPLICATION PACKAGE
1. Application form
2. Proof of current academic standing
3. Summary of interest

Application Package
1 Completed Application Form
One per student; rank top two choices from the list of research
projects; complete electronically, sign and submit the print-out
2 Proof of Current Academic Standing
Provide a one page print-out of your academic standing from
MyCampus (instructions provided on the website)
***Transfer students must also submit transcripts from their previous
institutions.
3 Summary of Interest (2 page maximum)
- which project(s) you are applying to and why;
- how the research position will enhance your academic studies and
career goals;
- what skills and expertise you can contribute to the project;
- demonstrate that you meet the academic criteria listed in the project
summary

Selection Criteria
High academic standing based on cumulative
GPA from all previous years of study.
Level of experience, skills and/or training
relevant to the specific research position applied
for.
Decisions will be made by a Selection
Committee based within each faculty or
individual faculty supervisors

When is the deadline?
All application packages are due:
Friday February 25th, 2011 by 12:00 pm
A hard copy of all applications must be
submitted to:

April.

Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council

Canadian Institutes of Health Research
Health Professional Student Research Award

UOIT STAR Award
Intended to stimulate student interest in research
and encourage students to undertake graduate
studies
14 STAR awards will be awarded (2 per Faculty)
Open to all students registered at UOIT
Supports a research project for 12 - 16 weeks

NSERC USRA
Intended to stimulate interest in natural sciences
and engineering research and encourage
students to undertake graduate studies or
pursue a research career in these fields
13 NSERC USRAs will be awarded
Open to Canadian citizens and permanent
residents
Supports a research project for 16 weeks

CIHR HPSRA
Supports research training for health professional
students. Eligible applicants must be registered in
a UOIT Bachelors program in Nursing (BScN) or
Kinesiology.
Open to Canadian citizens and permanent
residents
Supports a research project for 13 - 16 weeks

studies, these awards can provide you with
financial support through an industrial organization.
