Teacher Verbal Behaviors
Observational Technique #1
Materials: A watch with a second hand; a Teacher Verbal Behaviors chart.
Explanation: Cooperating Teacher/Supervisor and student teacher collaboratively develop a list
of no more than seven teacher behaviors that will be checked off as they occur at frequency
intervals of, for example, 1 minute (see chart for example teacher behaviors).
Keep a record of all teacher behaviors observed. Remember that the frequency of each behavior
is not recorded, merely the fact that the teacher behavior occurred within the time frame.
Share the information with your student teacher. Give him/her a copy of your checklist.
