Hawaii is a place of storytellers.<br />

From its ancient legends to <strong>the</strong><br />

hula, traditi<strong>on</strong>s are passed <strong>on</strong><br />

from generati<strong>on</strong> to generati<strong>on</strong><br />

through storytelling.<br />

of a Waikiki hotel that has come<br />

into its own. The deluxe<br />

639-room hotel reflects <strong>the</strong><br />

dedicati<strong>on</strong> of a family-owned<br />

hospitality company with deep<br />

roots in Waikiki. The l<strong>and</strong>mark<br />

resort showcases <strong>the</strong> best<br />

qualities of a world-renowned<br />

destinati<strong>on</strong>, enhanced by<br />

genuine Hawaiian hospitality<br />

Delightfully Unexpected<br />

<strong>and</strong> Truly Unforgettable.

The <str<strong>on</strong>g>Outrigger</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>Reef</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

is designed to complement<br />

<strong>the</strong> cordial <strong>and</strong> attentive staff<br />

who delivers its signature<br />

Na Mea Ho’okipa service.<br />

This graciousness is sec<strong>on</strong>d<br />

nature to isl<strong>and</strong>ers who are<br />

taught from a young age that<br />

making people feel<br />

comfortable in your home<br />

is expressing aloha.<br />

Signature Sig Zane<br />

One of Hawaii’s most culturally-sensitive<br />

designers, Sig Zane of Hilo, Hawaii, created <strong>the</strong><br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>Outrigger</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>Reef</str<strong>on</strong>g> uniforms. D<strong>on</strong>e in ‘Ohe Kapala<br />

(bamboo stamping) style, Zane incorporates<br />

<strong>the</strong> wa‘a (canoe) that brings a family toge<strong>the</strong>r, <strong>the</strong><br />

hoe (paddle), pe‘a (sail), <strong>and</strong> nalu (ocean waves).<br />

When guests are expected,<br />

<strong>the</strong> house is prepared.<br />

The best linen is put out.<br />

Fragrant tropical flowers<br />

adorn <strong>the</strong> rooms.<br />

The host makes sure<br />

And, of course,<br />

festivity to <strong>the</strong> occasi<strong>on</strong>.

The arrival experience<br />

is particularly impressive.<br />

The hotel’s entryway is a<br />

spectacular Polynesian canoe<br />

house built of richly-colored<br />

woods with traditi<strong>on</strong>al patterns.<br />

Restorati<strong>on</strong> of Ho‘aloha<br />

Ho‘aloha, suspended in our l<strong>on</strong>ghouse entryway,<br />

is a century-old Hawaiian canoe that had <strong>on</strong>ce<br />

been used for fishing. The koa-wood canoe<br />

had been discovered in <strong>the</strong> late 1980s <strong>and</strong> was<br />

restored by noted canoe builder <strong>and</strong> paddler<br />

Tay W. Perry, with <strong>the</strong> help of <strong>the</strong> Friends of<br />

Hokule‘a <strong>and</strong> Ho‘aloha as well as <str<strong>on</strong>g>Outrigger</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

employees. After its completi<strong>on</strong> in 2004,<br />

Ho‘aloha was paddled across <strong>the</strong> waters of Waikiki,<br />

l<strong>and</strong>ing at <strong>the</strong> beach fr<strong>on</strong>ting <strong>the</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>Outrigger</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>Reef</str<strong>on</strong>g>.<br />

Suspended from a towering<br />

perpendicular ceiling is<br />

<strong>the</strong> century-old Ho‘aloha koa<br />

canoe that was lovingly<br />

<strong>and</strong> painstakingly restored<br />

by volunteers <strong>and</strong> members<br />

of <strong>the</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>Outrigger</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

‘ohana (family).

Arriving guests are escorted<br />

through <strong>the</strong> hotel’s spacious,<br />

open-air lobby to <strong>the</strong><br />

registrati<strong>on</strong> area. A seated<br />

check-in is an introducti<strong>on</strong><br />

to <strong>the</strong> pers<strong>on</strong>al touch you will<br />

experience throughout your<br />

visit. You are refreshed from<br />

your journey with a fragrant<br />

cold towel. You can relax<br />

quietly in a sitting area with<br />

a library of literary works<br />

<strong>and</strong> treasures from<br />

<strong>the</strong> Bishop Museum.<br />

An ocean-oriented decor<br />

al<strong>on</strong>g <strong>the</strong> hallways inspires you<br />

to explore <strong>the</strong> living ocean<br />

just steps away. Isl<strong>and</strong>-inspired<br />

designs c<strong>on</strong>tinue in <strong>the</strong><br />

well-appointed guest rooms<br />

<strong>and</strong> suites that look out to<br />

Waikiki <strong>Beach</strong>, Diam<strong>on</strong>d Head<br />

<strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> H<strong>on</strong>olulu coastline.<br />

Furnishings are accented by<br />

warm woods <strong>and</strong> tropical<br />

tapestry. Coc<strong>on</strong>ut-scented<br />

toiletries <strong>and</strong> Hawaiian vignettes<br />

<strong>on</strong> turndown cards are am<strong>on</strong>g<br />

<strong>the</strong> thoughtful touches.<br />

Great Masters of <strong>the</strong> Art<br />

A collecti<strong>on</strong> of museum-quality artifacts highlight <strong>the</strong> history <strong>and</strong> traditi<strong>on</strong>al<br />

craftsmanship of Hawaii <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> Pacific. Am<strong>on</strong>g <strong>the</strong> treasures are:<br />

• Artist-historian Herb Kawainui Kane’s 18 images of Polynesian<br />

voyaging canoes.<br />

of curator-selected artifacts or <strong>on</strong> loan from private collecti<strong>on</strong>s.<br />

• Scenes of Hawaiian reef life by undersea photographer Glenn Poulain.<br />

• Guest room bedposts that are replicas of Queen Liliuokalani’s<br />

headboard at Iolani Palace.

Healing waters of Kawehewehe<br />

Great kahuna, wise men, used <strong>the</strong> p<strong>on</strong>d <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> area called<br />

Kawehewehe as a place of healing. The <str<strong>on</strong>g>Outrigger</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>Reef</str<strong>on</strong>g> <strong>on</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Beach</strong>,<br />

located <strong>on</strong> this site, celebrates <strong>the</strong> p<strong>on</strong>d <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> legend of healing<br />
