Our homework centers are working
due to … the dedicated learners,
Our Homework Centres have gone from strenght to strenght, as we now focus on the Crags
Primary as well as Kranshoek Primary (pictured above). The eighty children who attend the
classes do so every afternoon and have shown incredible progress. They thoroughly enjoy the
lessons which our Born in Africa staff prepare with enthusiasm. We have shown that learning
can be fun given the right recipe! What also keeps us going is the motivation from teachers and
parents who can see notable progress.
Passionate staff are key to the success of
any program and that is what Born in
Africa have, first and foremost.

Asanda Gigi, who has been in the Born in
Africa programme since 2003, matriculated in
2010. One of her dreams is to help within her
community. She feels the urge to uplift the
youth and teach them valuable life skills to
better their situation without depending on
handouts. Her positive attitude leads Asanda
to join the Crags homework centre as a tutor.
Her mother tongue is Xhosa and she was schooled in Afrikaans which is a clear advantage as
we have many Xhosa speaking learners at the Homework Centres who battle with Afrikaans.
With Asanda assisting the children with complex words and exercises it has lead to an increase
in their confidence, attendance and overall school results. Welcome Asanda to the BIA team!

… and the amazing funders!
With the combination of Isabelle De Smul-Brink (Born
in Africa General Coordinator) determination to incorporate
the Homework Centres within the Born in Africa
programme, the enormous need for these centres,
dedicated tutors, motivated children and the
wonderful fundraisers we have all the perfect ingredients
for a successful recipe!
Born in Africa has been blessed with private donations
which have enabled us to implement many different activities
within the programme.
We would like to introduce two of
the main sponsors from Holland:
Bram Verwije and Chantal Van
Summeren (see pictures with
their children). Both recently visited
the projects and they too were
impressed by what they saw.
“When you invest in something and you can see first
hand how your hard work is paying off day after day,
then your hard work is worth it,” says the couple.
Bram & Chantal went to visit the class in the Crags they sponsored.
Maths Challenge Holiday Programme
The eagerness of the children to attend and learn as
much as they can before the end of the year lead to Born
in Africa running a Maths Challenge which took place during
the school holidays. The 30 Crags and 45 Kranshoek
Primary school learners ranging from GR4 to GR7 pupils
attended the two day Maths boost programme.
Who are Bram and Chantal?
“We met Isabelle at the Crags Primary school in the
beginning of 2000 whilst we were teachers at the
school and she was the leading lady of the after care
programme. It was love at first sight between us all!
Love for the school but, most of all, love for the children
of the Kurland Village. From that moment, we
have been bound to Born in Africa.
Since then we have been able to do and achieve so
much together. The swimming lessons, reading
classes, the container filled with education material for
the Homework Centres as well as toys, blackboards,
tables and chairs etc. We have assisted in building two
classrooms at the Crags Primary school and we have
been involved in other various projects assisting and
working along side BIA.
They also went to visit the homework classes.
This has all been possible thanks to the wonderful
assistance we receive in Europe. The primary school
“De Triangle” and the high school “Maaswaal College”,
both in Holland, have worked with us on fundraising
projects to raise considerable funds. We are most
grateful to all our friends and colleagues. This money
is used to assist BIA wherever we can in aid of the
Kurland children. We truly hope to continue our relationship
with BIA for many years to come because we
can see a difference in the lives of many children”.
The event was jam packed with a variety of mathematical
hurdles for the learners to take on! Fractions,
times tables, rounding, weights & measures and transformations
were just a few of the topics covered during
the two days.
The BIA team shared this knowledge with the youngsters
by means of fun games and treasure hunts after
attending a rotating system of 30 minute classes. Well
done to all to the Wittedrift High BIA students who assisted
and to all the learners who attended. Lots of
improvement was achieved between the pre and post
tests!

gain the trust of those who needed extra attention.

What is happening at Wittedrift High?
Our BIA students. We our so proud of them!
Well done team, you have managed to complete the first
half of 2011 and with flying colors! Born in Africa now
boast some of the top achievers at the “small school with
the big heart”, namely Wittedrift High!
Not only did they assist Born in Africa during the school
holidays with the Maths Challenge, but they also all managed
to pass their exams did this very well indeed. We
have had so much feedback lately that these students are
always impeccably dressed, that their manners towards
their teachers are outstanding and that they are respected
by their peers.
Their involvement in netball, surfing,
the school choir, athletics, rugby,
tug of war, Field Band and other
extra curricular activities has also
ensured Born in Africa’s all round
commitment to the school.

Camping for a greener future!
Nature’s Valley is situated in the heart of the Garden
Route, 30 km from Plettenberg Bay and surrounded by
pristine indigenous forests and picture perfect sandy
beaches…This exquisite setting is where Born in Africa
recently held two camps to commemorate the “2011
International Year of the forest.”
The GR9 & 10 Born in Africa girls and GR8, 9 & 10
Born in Africa boys both took part in the fun filled
weekends. The superb programme was prepared by the
Nature’s Valley Trust. SANPARKS provided us with
tents fit for an authentic bush experience. The river was
to be our first activity where river monitoring took place.
This is where the children were given the task to collect
insects and identify the various species. Once this was
done, the pureness of the water could be tested.
After undertaking a bush hike where trees were identified,
the fun in the sun began. Sandcastle competitions,
beach soccer, volleyball, swimming and touch rugby
were a few of the activities the youngsters enjoyed.
The children also took part in a treasure hunt within the
very special “Phil Martin” botanical garden where various
clues to our special “fynbos” flora were given. The children’s
enthusiasm and knowledge of plants was inspiring
to the facilitators who battled to keep up! A tree
planting ceremony was held to emphasise the importance
of conservation.
No camp is complete without a true South African “braai”
and bonfire. Evenings were spend swopping stories under
the African stars.
Born in Africa would like to extend a warm thank you to

Knysna Elephant Park here we come!
A cold winter’s afternoon did not stop the enthusiastic 53
learners from Kranshoek Primary school, who were given
the opportunity to meet a special group of majestic elephants.
The children were chosen to take part in the outing due to
their excellent attendance at the Born in Africa Homework
Centre and Art & Craft club.
Well done to our 45 arty crafters from both the Crags and
Kranshoek Primary schools who have completed this year’s
course with flying colours! Twice a week the pupils would
gather to attend the lessons hosted by Born in Africa.
Under the guidance of teacher Aletta De Wet, both groups
made the most incredible items of outstanding quality. Mosaic
crosses, crochet aprons, wall calendars and hand panted tshirts
were just a few of the items manufactured this year.
During their outing, the children got to meet the elephants
up close and touch them! Some of the youngsters were
daring enough to feed them. What a perfect way to spend
a Friday afternoon! Well done to a bunch of brave children
who are not afraid of a couple of ellies and far more importantly,
not afraid of working very hard at school and
achieving their goals.

Boredom is a huge problem and this is when children get
involved in gangs, alcohol and drug abuse. By teaching
them various constructive ways of occupying themselves,
we are hoping to curb this problem.

Mentoring is key to a healthy mind!
Farewell Joyce, we will miss you! Group sessions in action
It was a very sad day when mentor Joyce Raye informed us of
her plans to leave Born in Africa. Joyce has been mentoring
Born in Africa children since 2004 and will be missed by all.
Her gift to work with children at risk has earned Joyce her
exceptional reputation in and around the Plettenberg Bay region
in various circles of social development, rehabilitation
and the education sector. Thank you Joyce!
Wherever we find ourselves in life, we are faced with safe as
well as dangerous places. When you have the proper tools to
deal with finding yourself in a dangerous place, you already
have the upper hand and the learning in this is a lifelong tool.
This is exactly what our Born in Africa mentors are teaching
our children at the moment. Not only do we focus on actual
safe and dangerous places in our communities, we also move
a step ahead by creating imaginary safe places where children
can escape to should they find themselves caught up in a
challenging and stressful place such as entering the examination
classroom, going for a job interview and even witnessing
their parents entangled in an argument.

Françoise & Jean-Pierre Mattelaer tied the knot on 8 July 2011
and requested that the gifts be donated to BIA. What a wonderful
gesture. With this our tertiary students are one step closer to their
dreams. Thank you so much.
Another special event of the de UNEXPO-Holland was organized
by the students of the Maaswaal College under the leadership of
Chantal & Bram Verwije - Van Summeren. The huge expo raised
an amazing amount of almost € 20 000. This donation will be used
in aid of Homework centre and Tertiary project. The Born in Africa
team are truly in awe with this incredible donation.
Beatrice Verstraeten of Wetteren recently celebrated her 65th
birthday. The party goers donated all the gifts to BIA. Thanks Beatrice
for your kindness and a Happy Birthday from the BIA team!
Rotary Club Düsseldorf (Rotary Gemeindienst Deutschland) donated
a wonderful amount of 8000 Euros towards the school fees
of the Wittedrift High students. What an amazing act of kindness of
the club. The students were overjoyed knowing that this had been
taken care of.
Godparents Marie-Flore Maenhout & Jean-Paul De Cordier collected
more than € 3000 for BIA. This incredible amount will be
donated towards their godchild’s studies, BIA dental work and the
BIA reading glasses project. Thank you to Dank U Marie-Flore &
Jean-Paul, friends, the architect guild and the Kiwanis Club from
Oudenaarde.
To those of you who did not take part in this event, really missed
out! On 28 June 2011, Lieve & Remi De Backer and their golf
club Oudenaarde arranged a golf day in benefit of BIA. The 110
participants raised more than €1500. What a magnificent succes.
Also on 21 & 22 May, a lot of golf was played during
the Flanders Nippon Golf day for the Captains
prize at Hasselt. Godparents L. Scheepers and his
wife, the captain and the vice chairman of the club
announced that €750 to be donated towards BIA.
Soccer for Born in Africa! This was the motto of the soccer tournament
organized by Brucago where 22 soccer clubs of various
firms took part. This all, thanks to Bjorn De Nil. BIA chairman
George De Smul very proudly collected the cheque of €4000. What
an fantastic initiative. Many thanks!
The pupils of Sint-Jan-Berchmansinstituut have also been very
busy. They collected a magnificent amount of € 2350 for BIA. A
warm thank you to the students, what a wonderful achievement.
The students of the Leielandscholen were just as diligent by collecting
€ 750 towards the BIA project.
This year Hilde De Baets, Jan, Sofie, Joris and other hardworking
folk worked tirelessly during the flea market at Veldseke.
The € 1375 raised there was donated towards the BIA tertiary study
program. What a dynamic team. Excellent!

Two recently born babies- Vic Matton
& Briek Peusens- already mean a lot
to Born in Africa. Proud parents of

and Sophie & Rogier Matton, parents

Isabelle receives a price!
Isabelle De Smul-Brink, coordinator of BIA in South Africa
received the De Visser-Neerlandia prize for her achievements
in the development sector!
The “Algemeen Nederlands verbond” would like to honor her
work for the projects she established in South Africa. A major
factor is that Born in Africa are assisting Afrikaans speaking
children with the organization supporting this language in
particular. The awareness which she has created in schools
in Holland and Belgium is also commendable and this has
leaded directly to sponsorship from various European
schools and other organizations. This has ensured € 5.000
towards BIA.
Isabelle, we are truly proud of you. Keep up the good work!

Our Lieve en Remi De Backer, BIA godparents, board members
and chairman BIA South Africa are celebrating their 40th
wedding anniversary! This they will do this in the company of
family and friends in September. All donations will go towards the
building of a new house for their godchild Ragné. What an incredible
gesture.
A golf tournament will take place on 16 September 2011 in
Aartselaar (Cleydael CC) to the benefit of BIA. Please contact
Stephan Du Bois (stedu@hotmail.com) should you wish to participate.
Great prizes up for grabs!
Godparent Ronny Verdievel will organize a huge celebration on
24 September as it is his birthday. He has requested that all gifts
should be donated towards BIA. A Man with a big heart!
Folks, keep 4 September 2011 free as BIA is organizing a
summer picnic in Lebbeke. All godparents, BIA friends and
donors are welcome. There you will be able to meet BIA volunteers,
board members of BIA and the BIA family. Part of
the program will include folk dancing, hiking and wine tasting.

Meet our SA Board members: Toralf & Reidun Nordbotten…
When did you visit South Africa for the first time and then
how did you come into contact with Born in Africa?
In 2004 after we retired we decided to travel in SA. We had a
house in Fancourt and being keen golfers we eventually met
Remi De Backer in 2006.
Being a godparent is a very special experience for you,
what message do you have for other prospective godparents
out there?
Use every chance possible to have close contact
with your godchild. Gwendoline has become
part of our family now. The joy of the
experience is incredible although not always a
fairytale. It is important to keep a realistic mind.
What BIA has achieved is already incredible
and most definitely a benefit for the country.
What do you wish for BIA in the future? We hope that more
learners will be able to study further after completed their
schooling. Young people need to be taught how to plan for
How did you come into contact with Born in Africa and
what was your first impression of the organisation?
I met Remi de Backer in the Rotary Club in Plett and he and
Isabelle showed us your work in the primary school in Kurland
Village. I was very much impressed, and so I also invited my
friends from our Rotary Club in Düsseldorf who visited us
sometimes later to see the initiatives of BIA. This was the beginning
of our common Rotary Matching Grant idea which
ended -until now- in the delivery of the new bus for the kids
and some thousand Euros for new scholarships.
Where would you like to see BIA in 10 years time?
Not only as a regional organisation, but as an institution for all
