They are among the first eight<br />

recipients of the $5,000 Rosen<br />

Fellowship, which gives Brooklyn<br />

College sophomores <strong>and</strong> juniors<br />

the chance to execute a dream<br />

project to further their education,<br />

career or life.<br />

Philanthropists Florence<br />

Cohen Rosen (Brooklyn College,<br />

B.A., ’59) <strong>and</strong> her husb<strong>and</strong>, Robert<br />

A. Rosen (CCNY Baruch School,<br />

B.B.A., ’57; M.B.A. ’60), said that<br />

they “wanted to give students the<br />

opportunity to broaden their education,<br />

without boundaries. We<br />

thought we’d get unusual <strong>and</strong> farrang<strong>in</strong>g<br />

projects. We were not disappo<strong>in</strong>ted.<br />

— Florence Cohen Rosen<br />

<strong>in</strong>trigu<strong>in</strong>g,” says Florence Rosen,<br />

who sits on the panel that picks the<br />

w<strong>in</strong>ners. The number of applicants<br />

<strong>in</strong> 2012 is expected to be far higher<br />

than the 40 or so <strong>in</strong> the <strong>in</strong>itial year<br />

as word has spread on campus.<br />

The Rosens, married 51 years,<br />

run Rosen Associates Management<br />

Corp., which s<strong>in</strong>ce 1960 has<br />

acquired, developed <strong>and</strong> managed<br />

shopp<strong>in</strong>g centers <strong>and</strong> other properties<br />

nationwide. Robert A. Rosen<br />

also served 50 years <strong>in</strong> the military<br />

<strong>and</strong> retired as the rear admiral<br />

comm<strong>and</strong><strong>in</strong>g the New York State<br />

Naval Militia, a part of the<br />

National Guard.<br />

That military experience was a<br />

key factor <strong>in</strong> the Rosens’ most<br />

ambitious philanthropy, the<br />

Florence <strong>and</strong> Robert A. Rosen<br />

Family Wellness Center for Law<br />

Enforcement <strong>and</strong> Military<br />

Personnel <strong>and</strong> Their Families at<br />

North Shore-Long Isl<strong>and</strong> Jewish<br />

(LIJ) Health System. S<strong>in</strong>ce 2005 it<br />

has provided cost-free care for the<br />

often-hidden psychological, behavioral<br />

<strong>and</strong> medical issues affect<strong>in</strong>g<br />

veterans, police <strong>and</strong> their families.<br />

Their concern for people<br />

prompted Florence Rosen to th<strong>in</strong>k<br />

broadly about offer<strong>in</strong>g fellowships<br />

at her alma mater, <strong>and</strong> students<br />

responded creatively.<br />

Elizabeth Cusick — a senior<br />

aim<strong>in</strong>g for an M.D. plus a Ph.D. <strong>in</strong><br />

epidemiology — had taken classes<br />

with Gerald Oppenheimer,<br />

Broeklundian Dist<strong>in</strong>guished<br />

Professor <strong>and</strong> professor of history<br />

at Brooklyn College <strong>and</strong> the CUNY<br />

Graduate Center. After read<strong>in</strong>g his<br />

studies of the HIV/AIDS epidemic<br />

<strong>in</strong> South Africa, she asked him for<br />

leads to follow. She connected with<br />

pediatrician Barbara Laughton at<br />

Tygerberg Children’s Hospital<br />

near Cape Town. Laughton had<br />

noticed abnormal head growth <strong>in</strong><br />

many HIV-positive children.<br />

Cusick analyzed records of 180<br />

HIV-positive children <strong>and</strong> a control<br />

group. Among the HIV-positive<br />

children, she found head size<br />

beg<strong>in</strong>s to plateau at age 2, <strong>and</strong><br />

smaller head size implies impaired<br />

neurological development. With<br />

an estimated 11 percent of South<br />

Africa’s population HIV-positive,<br />

<strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g 30 percent of the pregnant<br />

women, the effects of HIV<br />
