Bears ‘bear’ing Gifts for the
Holidays! Nate Collins & DJ Moore,
certainly made the holidays bright for the Allendale
children! The players visited campus on Tuesday, 12/18,
played field games with the kids and enjoyed hot chocolate
and snacks afterwards. The players also came “bearing”
gifts… a 60” plasma TV and brand
new air hockey & pool tables for the
newly remodeled Games Room, as well as a $50
gift card for each resident!
We are so grateful for their generosity!
Mr. Collins & Mr. Moore
also graciously answered
questions from the kids
and signed autographs.
Cottages also received a
copy of the Madden NFL
13 video game to play
with their roommates! A
fun, festive time was had
by all.

residents of Shelter West

Hawaiian style. Allendale
staff organized & hosted
this event to help the
kids learn generosity &
appreciation for family &
friends.

IL held it’s 9th Annual
Reunion this past fall,
inviting past alums &
families to enjoy an
afternoon of good food
and activities. Nearly 20
girls (previous & current
residents) shared stories
& advice.

the girls to keep

Friends & Family 2012 Hawaiian-themed Residential Program Reunion!
smart, fun & a great sense of humor... these are three words that
describe me now! My time here at Allendale hasn’t always been
the easiest, but I’ll be the first to admit it helped me better myself.
My math, reading, and social skills have improved
tremendously. I’m a better person. I know how to
control myself much better.
While I used to be considered rude,
disrespectful and aggressive... now I understand
the real meaning of respect, dedication,
and the importance of my education.

A Holiday to
Remember!
Excerpt from a holiday greeting
given to Allendale President, Mary
Shahbazian by a current student.
This year I was given the best
gift ever. I was given the gift
of knowing what it means to
have “family” and also what it
means to have “family during
the holidays”!
Before this Christmas, I really
could not have told you or anyone
what “family” really means.
I haven’t seen my brother for
years. Time and time again,
many different people have really
tried to set-up visits. Phone
call after phone call...and still
no visit.
However, this time it was different.
In November, at an
Amtrack Train Station...I finally
saw my brother!
When I look back on it now...all I
can say is thank you. I have you
to thank for bringing me and my
brother back together.
I was given many gifts this
Christmas...but, nothing compares
to the gift my brother and
I were given.
Now, I will always know, for the
rest of my life, what it means to
have family.

The questions Lake County Animal Care and Control
Warden Renee Wright fields from a group of teenagers
are not unusual, but they just touch the surface of
what the visits are about at Allendale.
Wright conducts educational programs
throughout Lake County on behalf
of the Lake County Health Department’s
Animal Care and Control program,
but Allendale is her favorite spot
because the programs are
educational and therapeutic
for the youth.
“Animals tend to break down
walls. I’ve seen changes in children
from the start of a program to the
end of a program,” she said.
During the once-a-week visits over the six weeks
program, Wright talks about animal cruelty. The
youth learn they can survive being mistreated, just
like the animals who visit.
“It’s hard to see why people don’t care for their
animals,” said 14-year-old Shirley, who wants to be
a veterinarian. “When I see a dog, I want to adopt it
right away.”
