This circular walk, tak<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> <strong>Maryport</strong>'s sea front,<br />

<strong>in</strong>volves a gentle flight of steps to look at the ru<strong>in</strong>s<br />

of the old harbour masters house. Although the<br />

second part of the route is not suitable for wheels,<br />

the first half mile is very accessible and it is well<br />

worth a walk to the lighthouse where there are<br />

extensive views across the Solway to Criffel and<br />

the Scottish hills. You can then return along your<br />

outward path.<br />

Along the one mile course you get a feel for the<br />

coastal town as you pass the mar<strong>in</strong>a and the<br />

unique iron lighthouse built <strong>in</strong> the 1850s, just at<br />

the end of the harbour. Once busy with <strong>in</strong>dustry,<br />

the area to your left is now a Site of Special<br />

Scientific Interest (SSSI) and has a population of<br />

the nationally rare Purple Broomrape. In June and<br />

July you will be treated to f<strong>in</strong>e displays of Northern<br />

Marsh Orchid and many other wild flowers.

Route description<br />

Beg<strong>in</strong> the walk just outside the car park for Riverside<br />

Court. With the ma<strong>in</strong> road (Irish Street) beh<strong>in</strong>d you,<br />

follow the pavement along Salmoor Way head<strong>in</strong>g<br />

towards the sea, cross<strong>in</strong>g over Mar<strong>in</strong>e Road<br />

junction. To your left, over the road, you’ll see an<br />

<strong>in</strong>terpretation board which details wildlife you might<br />

see. Rema<strong>in</strong> on the pavement as it bears right<br />

alongside the Mar<strong>in</strong>a. As the route opens up <strong>in</strong> front<br />

of you, the harbour wall is high on a mound on your<br />

left with Senhouse Dock on your right. Carry on<br />

until you come to the lighthouse where you have a<br />

choice of return routes. You can return along your<br />

outward path or follow a circular route.<br />

left which heads to<br />

the road and<br />
