Growing up in St. Catharines
heavily influenced my comedy
and writing. I’m not sure why.
It’s not really a comical city.
Although, I did always have
quite the chuckle during The
Grape and Wine Festival, but
since then I laugh because I’m
amazed at how impressive
it has grown. My funniest
memory was performing
in a play for Garden City
Productions. My whole family
came...and left at intermission.

youth was positively idyllic.
Life has taken me many
places but it’s still hard to beat
a summer’s day at Lakeside
Park, a winter walk at Ball’s

Bridge” in Jordan. I had my

Glenridge Ave. My dad fell in
love with the true beauty of

over the escarpment and
down Victoria Avenue in
the 1950’s. And for that I am
eternally thankful.

way to St. Catharines. The city

Heritage
St. Catharines is steeped in history and
continues to work hard to preserve an
impressive heritage. This was the final
stop of the Underground Railroad, the
route that U.S. slaves took to freedom
during the Civil War. Visit the British
Methodist Church and see the official
end of the Underground Railroad as
led by Harriet Tubman. The origins of
our city date back to native settlers. It
is the wife of the Honourable William
Hamilton Merrit, Catharine, to whom
we credit the “a” in St. Catharines (so the
story goes). The Merritt family, famous
for the founding of the Welland Canal,
built Rodman Hall and several other
important area landmarks.
Originally farmland, Port Dalhousie
was incorporated as a village in 1862
and soon became a thriving maritime
community. Port Dalhousie still carries
with it the timeless feeling of an historic
maritime city with old industrial
marine buildings and the Lakeside Park
Carousel. The St. Catharines Museum is
the keeper of many treasures. Perched
beside Lock 3 along the Welland Canal
it brings the city’s history to life with
award-winning interactive exhibits.
The Lock 3 complex also hosts the
Welland Canals Centre and is the
perfect vantage point to watch the
“ships climb the mountain”.
Downtown has a rich and storied past.

In the southernmost part of the
city is Decew Falls set alongside the

I know when I’m in
St. Catharines, not by the

Our city is bike friendly! Pack your bike

Bike train from Toronto to Niagara. Take
a break from the pavement and head
off-road on our many bike trails and
cycling paths along the Bruce Trail and
across the Niagara Escarpment.
The Toronto-Niagara Greenbelt Express
(summer season only) provides service
between Toronto’s Union Station and
Niagara Falls with stops along the way
in St. Catharines. Our station is only a
minute’s ride from the downtown core
and accommodations.
Downtown is the perfect starting point
for a ride up to Port Dalhousie, along
the Welland Canal, exploring the wine
route or hitting the serious trails along
the escarpment.
Short Hills Provincial Park encourages
any trail riders without a motor, so bring
your horse, bike or backpack and spend
the day spotting nature in motion from
wild turkeys to white-tailed deer, and
coyotes to meadow voles. Mixed in with
maples and pines are the more exotic
paw paw and sweet chestnut trees – all
yours to discover.
A portion of the Bruce Trail runs along
the escarpment that has been declared
a UNESCO World Biosphere Reserve.
This puts us in the same league as the
Florida Everglades, or the Serengeti
and Galapagos Islands. Recognized as
one of the world’s unique ecological
environments, you have the opportunity
to experience this rare ecosystem.
Port Dalhousie is a good bike ride
from downtown, or a short drive. This
charming waterfront village offers a
sandy beach, marinas, and familyfriendly
paths and parks. A great place
to explore or simply wander about with
an ice cream cone. Renowned for their
historic Looff Carousel carved in 1905
and still only a nickel a ride, the town
boasts everything from urban bistros to
fine dining restaurants.
The Welland Canal pathway offers
something for every level of cyclist,
walker, jogger, or in-line skater. The
paved path takes you alongside massive
freighters as they make their way up the
escarpment through a series of locks on
their way to Lake Erie and Lake Ontario.
St. Catharines is flowing! From the quiet
waters of Martindale Pond to the Port
Dalhousie beach, we are a watersport
and kayaker’s dream come true. Water
sports and activities in general are
enjoyed at our various access points to
Lake Ontario.
