Pastor’s Corner
Last Sunday, I had the
fortunate opportunity to
attend the 100th
anniversary celebration of
Loyola Academy and the
formal installation of their
new president, our very own
Fr. Pat McGrath, SJ! Loyola is in great
hands under the energetic, creative, and
spirited leadership Pat will bring to the
ministry of president. I speak on behalf of
Old St. Pat’s in expressing our pride and
congratulations for Pat McGrath. And, I am
most delighted Old St. Pat’s is the
“weekend” home of two great Catholic high
school presidents, Pat and Fr. Paul Novak of
DeLasalle Institute.
Attending the installation prevented me,
however, from being present for the Justice
Initiative’s Alternative Market. I heard it
was great! Thanks to more than 500 people
from Old St. Pat’s who supported our 27
artisans and organizations. These fair trade
and environmentally conscious businesses
support and uphold the rights and dignity
of workers by offering them a fair wage and
meaningful work. As our Season of Social
Justice continues, I hope you will plan to
attend Al Gustafson’s presentation on Faith,
Fear, and Finance, Monday, Sept. 28 at
6:30 p.m. in the Fr. Jack Wall Mission
Center. Al has been around Old St. Pat’s
for a long time and he is a great gift to us.
I know you will enjoy his talk.
Put on your dancing shoes for Friday,
Oct. 9! Old St. Pat’s annual Emerald Ball
is nothing but a great night of dinner and
dancing! Put a table together with your
family and friends, or let us help you put
one together. There are no long speeches
and no raffles; just the ingredients for a
good time!
Have a great week,
Respect for Life Sunday ~ Oct. 4
Every child...brings us God’s smile ad invites us to recognize
that life is his gift, a gift to be welcomed with love and
preserved with care always and at every moment.
~Pope Benedict XVI
The Archdiocese of Chicago, in conjunction with the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops,
has designated Oct. 4 as Respect for Life Sunday — Every Child Brings Us God’s Smile.
The Church takes this opportunity to proclaim the sanctity of human life from the moment
of conception until natural death. The dignity of a person must be respected throughout
each stage of life. As disciples of God, each and every one of us is important.
On this particular day, we are encouraged to re-examine the value of life, the dignity of
the person, and how each one of us must be respected and protected throughout life.
The family is...an indispensable foundation for society and a
great and lifelong treasure for couples. It is a unique good for
children, who are meant to be the fruit of the love, of the total
and generous self-giving of their parents.
Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
The apostle Paul had great affection for the church he had
founded at Philippi, a Roman town in the province of
Macedonia. When he wrote to the Philippians, he spoke from his heart. I give thanks to my God at every
remembrance of you, praying always with joy in my every prayer for all of you, because of your partnership for
the gospel from the first day until now. I am confident of this, that the one who began a good work in you will
continue to complete it until the day of Christ Jesus. (Philippians 1:3-6)
I can echo Paul’s words and apply them to you. I do give thanks to God for all the people of his church here in
the Archdiocese of Chicago. And although there are sometimes difficult and even painful elements in our life
together as God’s church, I truly do pray with joy in my every prayer, because I am fully confident that God has
begun a good work in us and God will bring it to completion.
Come to understand and feel this joy and confidence, as we gather for the Catholic Festival of Faith. In worship together, we will praise
God. In talks and break-out sessions, we will appreciate in a new and fresh way our Catholic faith. In our social time, we will renew our
connections as a diverse people of one faith who all share a holy purpose. We will rediscover how the love of Christ impels us, urges
us, and presses us to go forward.
In a fragmented and wounded world, we are so blessed to be a part of the Body of Christ. Come to this joy. Share this confidence.
Sincerely yours in Christ,
Francis Cardinal George, O.M.I.
Archbishop of Chicago
SEASON FOR SOCIAL JUSTICE
THE SEASON FOR SOCIAL JUSTICE 2009
HONORING THE DIGNITY OF WORK
SUPPORTING THE RIGHTS OF WORKERS
It has become our practice at Old St. Patrick’s to designate September as a Season for Social Justice. During this time,
we set our sights on gaining a greater appreciation and understanding of the Catholic social ethic. Selecting a theme from
Catholic Social Teaching, we use the Season as a time for dialogue, learning, inspiration, reflection, and most important,
as an impetus to action.
The following seven principles highlight the major themes from the body of
Catholic Social Teaching. This year, our focus is on the Dignity of Work and
the Rights of Workers.
Dignity of Work and the Rights of Workers (Season theme for 2009)
Our faith tradition teaches us the economy must serve people, not the other way
around. Our work should be more than a way to make a living; it should reflect our
continuing participation in God’s creation. Therefore, the dignity of work must be
protected and the basic rights of workers must be respected — the right to
productive work, to decent and fair wages, to the organization and joining of unions,
to private property, and to economic initiative.
Working for the Common Good (Season theme for 2008)
The person is not only sacred but also social. How we organize our society in
economics and politics, in law and policy, directly affects human dignity and the
capacity of individuals to grow in community. Therefore, we believe people have a
right and a duty to participate in society, seeking together the common good and
well-being of all, especially the poor and vulnerable.
Care for God’s Creation (Season theme for 2007)
The goods of the Earth are gifts from God. We have a responsibility to care for
these goods as stewards and trustees, not only as consumers and users.
Preferential Option for the Poor and Vulnerable (Season theme for 2006)
The opposite of rich and powerful is poor and powerless. If the good of all, the
common good is to prevail, preferential protection must move toward those
affected adversely by the absence of power and the presence of privation.
The Dignity of the Human Person
All people are sacred, made in the image and likeness of God. We firmly hold people
do not lose dignity because of disability, poverty, lack of success, age, or race.
Rights and Responsibilities
People have a fundamental right to life, food, shelter, health care, education, and
employment. Just as important, all people have a right to participate in decisions
that affect their lives. Corresponding to these rights are duties and responsibilities to
respect the rights of others in the wider society and to work for the common good.
Solidarity
We are one human family. Our responsibilities to each other cross national, racial,
economic, and ideological differences.
FAITH, FEAR, AND FINANCE:
SPIRITUAL REFLECTIONS ON THE
ECONOMIC DOWNTURN
LED BY AL GUSTAFSON
MONDAY, SEPT. 28
Often left unaddressed, one
of the results of the
economic downturn, has
been a disturbing sense of
vulnerability many of us are
experiencing. This uneasy
feeling may trouble our
thoughts about personal
Al Gustafson
finance, employment and vocation, our
dreams for what constitutes a comfortable
life, our plans for retirement, and our futures
in general.
We hope this session will provide you with an
opportunity to explore what faith has to say
about an economic downturn and the very
human experience of vulnerability and
unexpected change. Among the questions we
will explore are: What has the economic
crisis revealed about our own personal
spiritualities? Does our faith have anything to
say about this kind of vulnerability? How
might communities of faith respond to this
crisis? Can grace and growth be found within
a financial crisis?
Faith, Fear, and Finance: Spiritual Relfections
on the Econmonic Downturn will be held on
Monday Sept. 28, 2009 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.
in the Fr. Jack Wall Mission Center, room
25AB, 2nd floor.
Al Gustafson has served as the executive
director of Crossroads Center for Faith and
Work at Old St. Patrick’s Church in Chicago.
He is a founder and past president of
Career Transitions Center of Chicago.
Al is a frequent retreat leader, and a
spiritual director.
SEASON FOR SOCIAL JUSTICE
HONORING THE DIGNITY OF WORK AND SUPPORTING THE RIGHTS OF WORKERS
This year, our annual Season for Social Justice is focused on issues of work and worker justice. In keeping with that focus, we would
like to draw your attention to two partner organizations that have a home on the Old St. Pat’s campus (703 W. Monroe Street). Both
The Cara Program and The Career Transitions Center of Chicago are premier examples of organizations committed to supporting the
growth and development of individuals in and through their working lives. We applaud their good work and many successes! We’re
proud to be mission partners with them.
The Cara Program
Career Transitions Center of Chicago
The Cara Program's Mission
Founded in 1991 by Tom Owens, the
mission of The Cara Program is to assist motivated individuals
affected by homelessness and poverty to transform their lives
and achieve real, lasting success, by providing comprehensive
training, permanent job placement, and critical support services.
The Cara Program Philosophy
Individuals can only transform their lives and realize their fullest
potential when they find a job that pays a living wage and
benefits. The Cara Program places students (all working-age
adults) in quality jobs at one of 100 plus Cara companies
throughout the Chicago area.
The Program
Many national leaders have recognized The Cara Program as a
premier organization that helps the homeless to regain their
dignity and become productive members of society. The Cara
Program model is committed to helping motivated men and
women develop the necessary tools and opportunities to shed old
behaviors and constraints, transform their lives and achieve real,
lasting success. The Cara Program model generates meaningful
results by focusing on education and training, job placement and
intensive support services.
The Impact
• More than 2,300 individuals affected by homelessness and
poverty have been placed into quality, permanent jobs.
• Currently 73 percent of students remain employed for more
than one year.
• The current average hourly wage for employed students is
$11, more than $4 above the federal minimum wage.
• More than 100+ Chicago area companies hire Cara students.
• More than 500 graduates are enrolled in The Cara
Program matched savings initiative.
• $200,000 paid out in matched savings.
• Dozens of Cara graduates are now homeowners.
• Hundreds of parents have reclaimed custody of their children.
Career Transitions Center of Chicago’s (CTC) Mission
The Career Transitions Center of Chicago’s mission is
to provide professional, emotional and spiritual support to those
seeking a job or creating a new career direction. CTC is a
volunteer-driven, non-profit organization serving primarily midcareer
professionals, a segment deeply impacted by the past
year’s economic crisis.
CTC was founded in 1997 by five faith communities: Old St.
Patrick’s Church (Roman Catholic); Holy Name Cathedral
(Roman Catholic); Chicago Temple (United Methodist); Fourth
Presbyterian Church of Chicago; and Saint Chrysostom Church
(Episcopal), to support those who otherwise could not afford or
have access to comprehensive job placement services. Today, CTC
represents an alignment of academic institutions, faith
communities, and businesses concerned with supporting people in
their search for meaningful employment and sustainable success.
How Does CTC Serve?
Sixty percent of clients are in their 40’s and 50’s, while another
seven percent are 60-years and older. After losing their jobs, 40
percent of clients report household incomes below the Federal
Health and Human Services Poverty Guidelines for 2009. CTC’s
Level the Load initiative provides a list of resources to clients
and their families at risk of losing their health insurance, their
homes and their savings as job searches for many have persisted
for nine to 16 months.
CTC offers programs and coaching to help clients organize and
execute self-directed plans for progress, including one-on-one
and group sessions with nearly 50 skilled career coaches, and
access to the Business Center with telephones, fax and copy
machines and high speed Internet;
Support Our Mission
Considering that nearly half-a-million people in Illinois have lost
their jobs in our ongoing economic meltdown, the mission of The
Career Transitions Center is more urgent now than at any time
since its founding twelve years ago.
People You Should Know
Mark and Aimee Scozzafave
Q. How long have you volunteered at Old St. Pat’s?
A. Since the summer 2006. I suggested to Aimee we should
inquire about getting involved. We are glad we did!
Q. Tell us a little about your ministry or volunteer position.
A. We help lead the music at the 5 pm Mass. Each week Aimee
cantors, and Mark plays the piano.
Q. What prompted you to choose this area in which to volunteer?
A. We have always had music as a central component in our lives. With music
degrees from Notre Dame and the great experience of leading music in our
residence halls, we were seeking the right place for us to get involved. Old St. Pat’s
was the perfect opportunity.
Q. What is the most significant aspect of your volunteer activity?
A. Simply to give back our talents to the community and to God.
Q. Why do you volunteer at Old St. Pat's, and what rewards do you reap
as a volunteer?
A. We participate in the music program because we truly delight in being able to
engage in the music-making experience while honing our skills and meeting some
great friends. We volunteer because we think it is the right thing to do. We
believe our church should not pay us for our talents, but we should “pay” the church
with our talents.
Q. What advice would you give to someone who is considering becoming
a volunteer?
A. If you are interested in volunteering for the Music Minstry, please contact Bill Faher,
music director, at billf@oldstpatsorg. For information about other ministries
or opportunities, please check the Resoure Guide on the Old St. Pat’s Web site
at oldstpats.org/learning.
Q. Do you have a favorite anecdote or short story about your
volunteer experience?
A. Playing the piano at Old St. Pat’s has taught me a sense of versatility I previously
lacked. You never know, week to week, how the piano will sound: sometimes the
upper register is weak and out of tune, sometimes the lower end is dull and, even,
missing a few strings! I am constantly adapting my style and note placement to
match the best parts of the piano. This is not a skill I am looking to develop much
further as I hear a new piano is in the works!
Q. How does spirituality play into your role as a volunteer?
A. Because of our involvement in the church, we have met many fantastic people.
Each has helped deepen our spirituality through conversation and debate. It was
not so much spirituality that brought us to volunteer, but our spirituality deepened
because of our involvement.
If you would like to make a gift toward the purchase of a new piano, please mail your gift
to Old St. Pat’s Church, Attn: Piano Appeal, 711 W. Monroe, Chicago, IL 60661, or contact
Staying the course with the current U.S. system of health care is simply not an option.
No matter how they are counted, there are too many citizens without, or insufficient, health insurance. To argue our system is the best in
the world (not true) and anyone can obtain care if they really need it is naive. Even the most cynical among us must be concerned for the
assured bankruptcy of the current system.
Catherine DeAngelis, as the first woman editor of the Journal of the American Medical Association, has made a special effort to publish
scientific articles on women's health issues. The journal plays an important role in bringing new research to light, and featured articles can
lead to fundamental changes in treatment.
Dr. DeAngelis began her medical career with a pediatric residency at Johns Hopkins Hospital. She earned her public health master’s
degree at Harvard, and worked at the Roxbury Community Clinic. She wrote a textbook for nurse practitioner-medical resident teams
published in 1973 to address some of the basic care problems she observed.
Dr. DeAngelis worked as a faculty member at Columbia College of Physicians on improving health care systems in Harlem and Manhattan
in New York using physician-nurse practitioner teams, and later organized a system for children's health care at the University of
Wisconsin.
In 1978, DeAngelis began as chief of general pediatrics and adolescent medicine at Hopkins and was appointed vice dean for academic
affairs and faculty. When she was made a full professor, Dr. DeAngelis was only the twelfth woman in Hopkins's 94-year history to receive
that rank.
The Amazing Faiths Dinner Project 2009
Breaking Bread and Building Bridges:
Thursday, Nov. 12
The Amazing Faiths Dinner Dialogues provide an opportunity for people of other faith traditions
to meet, share their experiences and listen to others, as well as converse about matters of faith
and spirituality in a safe controlled environment. The Dinner Dialogue is the cornerstone of the
Amazing Faiths Project. At this annual event, people gather in groups of eight to ten in private
homes to share a meal and engage in a moderated discussion about the role of faith or spirtuality in their lives.
Additional details will be included in future issues of The Crossroads bulletin.
There will be no peace among the nations without peace among
the religions. There will be no peace among the religions without
dialogue among the religions. - Hans Küng
Following the 2007 holiday season, Old St. Pat’s member Gail
Rosseau made a New Year’s resolution. And though she
announced it after over-indulging in a Christmas/Hanukkah feast
with family friends Rachel Dvorken and Harry Rosenberg, it had
nothing to do with losing weight. It had to do with gaining friends
- Muslim friends.
The director of Cranial Base Surgery at the Chicago Institute of
Neurosurgery and Neuroresearch, Dr. Rosseau was returning late
last fall from the Pan-Arab Spine Society Conference in Tunisia,
when her resolution began to take shape.
Her Jewish friends, members of Chicago Sinai Congregation,
introduced her to the Niagara Foundation, a Chicago-based, nonprofit
organization dedicated to promoting global fellowship.
At a book signing sponsored by the Foundation, she met Jill
Carroll, executive director of the Boniuk Center for the Study and
Advancement of Religious Tolerance at Rice University. Dr. Carroll
spoke about a project she had initiated in Houston called Amazing
Faiths Dinners, small gatherings in private homes intended to
foster appreciation and understanding among people of different
faiths. In 2006, 60 people participated in Houston. In 2007, the
project expanded to Austin and the number doubled. Rosseau said
she told Dr. Carroll the project should be national.
In 2008, it went national garnering 2,000 participants in 10 cities
across the United States for dinner and dialogue on Nov.13. Fortyone
of them were guests in Dr. Rosseau’s River Forest home.
They took turns drawing cards with pre-printed questions
prompting personal reflection on ways their various faith traditions
had impacted their lives and beliefs. Participant Hind Makki, a
fellow at the American Muslim Civic Leaders Institute and
program associate in outreach education and training at Eboo
Patel’s Interfaith Youth Core (http://www.ifyc.org/), understood
and appreciated the personal approach.
Makki, who travels widely to promote religious pluralism, said,
“We tell young people they are not scholars of faith, or theology,
or of sacred texts, but they are scholars of their own experience.”
The stories shared over the vegetarian lasagna and eggplant
parmesan in the Rosseau home revealed how faith sustained the
Jewish, Muslim, and Christian participants in times of crisis, or
challenged them to take action in times of need. Guests shared
their beliefs concerning the afterlife, evil, forgiveness, and what it
means to be made in God’s image. In the end, divergent
theologies were not the issue some might have feared, and
common denominators were discovered.
As her guests were leaving, Dr. Rosseau heard a universal desire
to continue the dialogue. “There’s a new feeling about the climate
in the United States today,” she said. “People believe it is both
permissible and necessary to discuss religion and politics in the
public square, where once it was considered taboo.
A New Year’s resolution born of a desire to strengthen the
diversity in one woman’s life gave rise to the same desire in her
guests. “Every participant wanted to know how we could build on
this,’” Rosseau said.
Barry Pollard, chair of Old St. Pat’s Committee for Interreligious
Understanding, had an idea. “Just think,” he said, “if everyone who
participated this year hosted a dinner with eight to 10 participants
next year, we would have more than 200,000 people in dialogue in
2009. I believe this kind of event can change the world.”
Monday, Nov. 16
Come join us as Muslim leader, Eboo
Patel, sits down for a conversation with
Krista Tippett, the host of Chicago Public Radio’s Eboo Patel
Speaking of Faith. How does Krista answer the kinds of questions
dialogue between belief and non-belief in modern life changed?
Beginning at 6 p.m. on Monday, Nov. 16, enjoy a light reception
Speaking of Faith is the national and global conversation about
religion, meaning, ethics and ideas, using in-depth conversations
be human? How do I find meaning in a rapidly changing,
complex world? Selected for broadcasting and the Internet's
highest honors, including a Peabody and two unprecedented
In honor of the United Nations’ International Day for the Eradication of Poverty, we will
host three fundraising activities:
• Kickoff Event - 5k Run/Walk: Saturday, Oct. 3;
• Online Auction: open Saturday, Oct. 3 – Saturday, Oct. 17;
the ad book at the kick-off event, and also by mail to all of our event supporters.
5k Run/Walk Details
Event Basics
Timeline
• Saturday, Oct. 3; 8 A.M. – Registration opens
• Grant Park; 9:55 A.M. – Runners’ start
• $25 registration fee; 10 A.M. – Walkers’ start
Through the AIDS Foundation of Chicago's innovative CommunityDirect program, all
monies raised by The Cara Program (TCP) team will come right back to TCP! How does
this work? The AIDS Foundation gives out grants to non-profit organizations such as TCP.
Instead of raising money and then giving out grants, they have put together this 5K where
we can fundraise for our own organizations.
The Cara Program is very grateful for the immense support we have received from the Old
St. Patrick’s community during the past two decades. And, we hope the community is
energized to join us for this new event for new times!
For more information about sponsoring this event, advertising in their program book,
Sept. 30
Memorial of St. Jerome
(hermit, presbyter, doctor
of the church, 341 – 420)
Jerome was born in
Dalmatia, along the coast of
the Adriatic Sea. His parents
were Christians, and they sent him to Rome for a
good education. Jerome developed a passion for
collecting books (which were very rare and
expensive objects in those days).
After his schooling, Jerome lived as a hermit in the
Syrian Desert for five years. Later he was invited to
Rome to become the secretary of Pope Damasus I.
Three years later, Damasus died, and Jerome’s
feisty personality made him many enemies in Rome.
He decided to travel to the Holy Land, and settled in
the city of Bethlehem, where he would remain for
the rest of his life.
In Rome, he had preached some very outspoken
homilies criticizing the wealthy. He had also begun a
scripture study group for women of the upper classes.
It was the first group of its kind. He knew contact
with scripture would transform people’s lives.
One woman of the group, Paula, became a brilliant
scholar, and like Jerome, she studied Greek and
Hebrew so she could better understand the Bible.
She and many other followers of Jerome went with
him when he settled in Bethlehem. Paula and Jerome
founded two monasteries, one for men and one for
women, and a church to be used by both houses.
In Bethlehem, Jerome devoted his life to study and
meditation. Assisted by Paula and others, he
completed the enormous task of translating the
Bible from Hebrew and Greek into Latin, which was
spoken by most people at that time. Jerome’s
translation was called the Vulgate, from the Latin
word for “the common people.” There had been no
careful Latin translation available before, and
Jerome’s translation was used for many centuries.
Despite his hot temper, Jerome was always kind to
needy persons. When Rome was attacked in the
year 410, many refugees came east to the
monasteries. Jerome laid aside his studies to serve
them, saying, “Today we must translate the words
of scripture into deeds, and instead of speaking
saintly words we must act them.” When he died,
Jerome was buried under the Church of the Nativity
in Bethlehem.
