From the President
Dear ‘Scho Girls’,
St. Scholastica Alumnae Association Fall 2008
P.O. Box 493 • Fort Smith, Arkansas 72902
It seems like such a short time since the last Alumnator
was mailed. Did we ever think time would pass so
quickly! For most of us (some of you are still youngsters!)
we look back on our careers and wonder how we
ever had time for work. Now we can choose the work
and volunteering that is so needed and rewarding.
Many of you have sent dues and have been generous
with your donations. Please remember if you miss
sending dues you need not worry - we will accept dues
anytime. We always enjoy receiving your notes and letters.
Each time I am able to celebrate Sunday Mass with
the Sisters at the Monastery I hear them include the
Alumnae in their petitions. The Sisters are genuinely
grateful for the generosity of the Alumnae. Since the
last Alumnator the Sisters hosted a ‘thank you’ dinner
for all alumnae who have volunteered the past year. It
is so special to feel that love and I hope each of you feel
it too.
The Sisters have moved the gift shop from the Center
to the Monastery. An entrance and sidewalk was made
on the west wall just south of the main entrance. This
location will be much more convenient for the Sisters
and the public. In the process of creating this new entrance
shrubs and plants had to be removed. The Sisters
need landscaping and signs for the new location.
The statue of St. Scholastica that graced the west entrance
of the Academy had been removed when Trinity
leased part of the building. The statue was crated and
is stored on the Monastery grounds. The Sisters are
hoping to place this statue somewhere near the Monastery
building. Your officers propose to undertake
the landscaping, signs and placement of the statue as
the alumnae’s 2008 project. We are currently getting
estimates for each of these areas.
We hope you and your families will share a good
Thanksgiving and a Blessed Christmas.
Love and gratitude to all,
From the Moderator
Dear Scho Girls,
The July 13-15, 2007, Alumnae Reunion
seems so long ago, doesn’t it? At each reunion I notice
the conspicuous absence of some of our members
who have joined the saints for a different kind
of reunion in heaven. You will notice the deaths of
three Alumnae this past year. As I write this letter,
I’m also thinking of a number of Scho girls who
have suffered the loss of their spouses in the last
few years and especially this year. You, too, are in
our prayers.
Our Bishop, Anthony Basil Taylor, who was
installed last June 5 will make his first trip to the
monastery Nov. 17. He will say Mass for us that
morning and will be present for the party celebrating
the lives of our wisdom women that afternoon.
Our two living principals are in the nonagenarian
group: Sister Norbert Hoelting at 94 and Sister
Consuella Bauer at 92. The lone centenarian is
Sister De Chantal Hyland who became 102 Oct. 7.
By the end of November there will be 16 Sisters in
the centenarian and nonagenarian category. I’ll list
the others since some of them may have been your
teachers or friends or relatives: Sisters Irma Twenter,
Anne Heim, Patrick Cingolani, Valeria Moellers,
Annella Reginelli, Richard Walter, Cordelia Lange,
Josita Nahlen, Hermana Siebenmorgen, Vivian Luyet,
Jovita Stengel, and Anita Berkemeyer.
Those of you who live in Arkansas and
are subscribers to the diocesan paper, The Arkansas
Catholic, may have noticed an increase in the
number of articles about happenings at the monastery
and the Retreat Center. That’s because we’ve
hired, as of Jan. 2 of this year, a Communications
Director, Maryanne Meyerriecks, who has pulled
together under that one office the publicity for the
monastery, formerly done mostly by Sister Pierre
Vorster, for the Retreat and Spirituality Center, done
by Sisters Hilary Decker, Macrina Wiederkehr, and
Therese Moreno, for the Vocations Department by
Sister Kimberly Prohaska, and the Oblates by Sister
Magdalen Stanton. Maryanne is doing excellent
work getting the messages out.
Contunued from page 1
Maryanne has also connected us with the
Fort Smith Historical Society to get interviews with
the elder Sisters. Interviewer and photographer Jo
Wasson has made DVDs of the memories of a number
of Sisters. Sister Rosemary Rufener wanted to
be a part of this history project before she died; she
died a short time later. Jo has already interviewed a
number of Sisters.
Sisters Kimberly and Pat are posting vocation
stories on our reconstructed web site. You may
want to check that at www.stscho.org. You will find
a lot of information about us there. They post two
stories at a time; I notice that Sisters Anne Heim and
Maria de Angeli are featured during September.
We’re excited about the lovely calendar
Maryanne has prepared using Sister Macrina’s photos
and quotations from her most recent book, Seven
Sacred Pauses. They will be sold in our gift shop
which has been moved to the monastery from the
Center. Mayor Ray Baker came for a public ribboncutting
and blessing Saturday, Sept. 20, at 2:00 p.m.
Of course, he brought the roses for the occasion.
The Sisters had decided to move the gift
shop to the monastery building to make it easier for
the customers who found it so tiring to park in the
lot north of the Center, walk up the steps to the main
entrance, walk down the long hall to the elevator and
then down another long hall on 2nd floor and then to
make a left turn down another hall before opening
the door to the Gift Shop. They had no energy left to
‘shop until you drop.’ As a further accommodation
for the customers in the monastery building, a new
entry was made south of the main entrance as well
a wider sidewalk from the parking lot to the door.
Dorothy Sullivan has a suggestion in her letter about
the Alumnae project for this year.
Another new hire since June 23 is a computer
maintenance person, Gareth Pereira, who, besides
all the computer maintenance and updating, is
restructuring the web site to make it easier to navigate.
This work was formerly updated by Sisters Pat
Bolling and Kimberly Prohaska,.
John Bell, a local artist famous for painting
historic scenes of Fort Smith, painted a picture of
the monastery which we have displayed near the
front entrance by the elevator. It’s the historic building
without the more recent fire escape/sundeck
and with two old model cars on the road which is
covered with a light snow. It’s really quite lovely. In
fact, so lovely that we’re going to use it as our Christmas
card this year. After Christmas the cards, with
a plain inside, will be available in the Gift Shop.
I can’t end my letter without again expressing
the deep gratitude we Sisters feel for the Alumnae,
the Scho Girls who have done so much for us in
many ways, including financial ways. Dorothy Sullivan
and Virginia Ricketts continue to prepare the
meals for the retreatants at the Center again this
year. That’s a great financial savings for the Sisters,
and besides, those two help Sister Madeline Bariola
serve wonderful meals; we Sisters get to enjoy the
leftovers. For some occasions and larger groups,
they call other local Scho Girls to help. We are so
grateful to all of you for your continuing love and
support.
As some of you know, I had both knees replaced,
one last October and the second this past
April. I am doing very well; I go up and down stairs
with little or no pain and I also kneel in chapel. I was
diagnosed with Parkinsons Disease Jan. 29. The
doctor said I have a mild case; for that news I am
most grateful. The most obvious symptom I had was
the hand trembling, especially of the right hand, and
infrequently, the left. The medicine is helping some;
at least I can write my name legibly now.
I’m in the last year of a second 4-year term as
prioress. You might join us Sisters as we pray for the
guidance of the Spirit in the selection of the next prioress.
I know you and your parishes pray for vocations.
Now we need your help to identify some prospects to
join us to carry on this Benedictine spirit. Visit the
vocation section of the web offerings.
May God bless each of you and your family
members with safety, joy, and good health.
Gratefully for all that has been and all that will be
because of you.
LETTERS FOR SHARING

FROM FORMER PRINCIPALS
Greetings to All,
Something in the air this month reminds me of days long past when we were preparing for your return
to St. Scho for another year - making beds, cleaning lockers, ordering books - how well we remember! I
want you to know it’s always a joy to see you, to hear from you.
We are very grateful for the many ways you help us. A special thanks to Dorothy Sullivan and Virginia
Ricketts and others who so graciously help during retreats at the Center.
Life has slowed down a bit for me. I do enjoy doing what I can. I’m very grateful for time for prayer
and good reading as well as visiting the Sisters in the infirmary and working in the front office answering the
doorbell and the phone. It’s always a surprise to see one of the grads at the door.
Be sure that you are remembered in prayer daily. May God grant you good health and joy in whatever
you do.
Love,
Sister Norbert Hoelting
Hello, Scho Girls of Yesteryears!
Greetings to all of you from all of us! On my wall hangs a saying, “The heart that loves is always
young.” Although many years have passed since your days at St. Scholastica, my hope for you is that you
have found people to love and who love you in return. In that way, although our age increases and our bodies
may weaken, our HEARTS will always stay YOUNG.
As each day here at the monastery draws to a close, we remember all of you at Vespers and ask God’s
blessings for you.
If your travels bring you to the Fort Smith area, know that I would be pleased and delighted to have
you visit. –Sister Consuella Bauer
FROM Scho “Girls”
Mary Longley ‘64 – Due to health issues, I was unable
to attend St. Scho’s 2007 Reunion. I have fond
memories of St. Scho. This year, I moved to Wellesley,
MA. Wellesley doesn’t have public transportation.
Unless one owns a car, commuter rail or bike are
the only modes of transportation. I’m glad that both
Sister Consuella and Sister Norbert are active. I look
forward to the next reunion.
Stella Post Conatser ’49 – Thanks to the officers for all
you do for our organization and the dear Sisters of St.
Scholastica. I always feel so fortunate to have gone to
school there. My family and I are well. If all goes as
planned, I’ll probably get a couple of new knees this
year. Looking forward to climbing those steps next
reunion. God’s blessings.
Barbara Pirker Greco ’58 – How great to still be a
part of St. Scholastica for all of these fifty years since
graduation. We truly are family thanks to Our Lord
for the gift of going there - for parents for their sacrifices
in sending us there – the dear sisters who made
school and a great deal about us who we are - the
many friends that we still cherish in memory. How
blessed we’ve been. Thanks to the diligence of all of
you who continue the work to make this possible.
Erma Jean Hicks ’60 – I am sorry that I missed the reunion
last summer. I was glad to be able to see all the
pictures from the reunion. I have been in touch with
some of my classmates from 1960 that I had lost touch
with. Computers and e-mail are great. My e-mail address
is ejhicks@bellsouth.net. I would enjoy hearing
from classmates of 60. I enjoy reading the Alumnator
very much.
Time, storms not kind to monastery’s bells
Saturday, October 25, 2008 11:26 AM CDT
By Tina Dale
TIMES RECORD • tdale@SWTIMES.COM
The bells at St. Scholastica are
silenced, and an era may have
come to an end.
The three bells — the Benedict,
the Mary Joseph and the
Scholastica — sat atop St.
Scholastica Monastery on Albert
Pike since 1929. At 1:30
p.m. Oct. 17, Jerry Spann, a
crane operator with Holmes
Erection Co., used a 100-foot
crane to lift the bells off the
building.
The entire operation, which
included taking the three bells
off the roof and placing them
on a trailer, was completed
within an hour and a half, said
Sister Pierre Vorster, monastery
grounds keeper.
“Thus after 79 years, the PHOTO BY BRIAN SANDERFORD •
bells were back on the TIMES RECORD
ground,” Sister Vorster
said. But that 79 years was
just the latest part of a rich history for the bells.
Mother Meinrada Lex and the Benedictine Sisters of St. Scholastica
Convent in Shoal Creek purchased the bells in 1896 for $450
from the Henry Stuckstede Foundry in St. Louis. Each bell was
sponsored and inscribed separately.
The Benedict, the largest of the three bells weighing in at 2,200
pounds, was sponsored by Bishop Edward Fitzgerald of Little
Rock and Catherine Mundo, Sister Vorster said.
It is inscribed in Latin, “Laudate dominum omnes gentes;
Lauedate eum omnea populs,” which Sister Vorster translated to
“Praise the Lord al you nations; Praise him all your people.”
“I find it odd that they misspelled ‘laudate.’ But it must have
been done by the company inscribing it and left that way,” Sister
Vorster said.
The Mary Joseph, an 1,800-pound bell sponsored by Mr. and
Mrs. Joseph Neihouse, pioneer members of St. Scholastica Parish
and parents of the late Sister Bernardine Neihouse, is inscribed,
“I ring at times to let the nuns know when to and from the choir
to go.”
The Scholastica is inscribed, “At proper times my voice will raise
and sound to my subscribers praise.” The 1,600-pound bell was
sponsored by Mr. and Mrs. Peter Engel, pioneer settlers of St.
Scholastica.
Fitzgerald baptized the three bells Jan. 19, 1896, at Shoal Creek.
Then 20 men hoisted the bells into the bell tower in the wood
quadrangular convent building in Shoal Creek on Feb. 19, 1896.
“It’s amazing that a wooden bell tower could hold the bells, but
we’ve had all these problems keeping them on the roof here,”
Sister Vorster said.
The newly erected bells rang out the first time to proclaim the
1896 Easter Alleluia, Sister Vorster said. The bells called the
Benedictine sisters to service and prayer for years in Shoal Creek.
Then on Nov. 26, 1928, they were dismantled and moved to Fort
Smith, where the sisters were taking residence in their home, St.
Scholastica convent, a name that was changed to St. Scholastica
Monastery in 1986, Sister Vorster said.
It took some time and research before the bells could be secured
to the top of the six-story building. They were hoisted to the roof
of the tower of the newly completed chapel wing of the convent
on June 4, 1929, the ninth anniversary of the profession of the
first prioress, Mother Lex.
“The bells were operated with separate switches and rang out for
the first time (at St. Scholastica) on June 12, 1929, the event of
the dedication of the chapel wing. By this method ... one bell only
could be rung or all the bells together could be rung. This method
of motor-operated bell ringing is believed to have been the first
of its kind in the world,” Sister Vorster wrote in a history of the
bells.
Unfortunately, trouble began between the bells and the structure
of the building in 1962 when Bishop Albert L. Fletcher of Little
Rock requested the bells be rung for 10 minutes to commemorate
the opening of the ecumenical council. The bells rang about four
minutes, then blew a fuse, Sister Vorster said.
The bells were put into limited use, and in 1968, an engineer was
consulted.
“It was determined that the regular swinging of the bells was
weakening the structure of the building, so the bells were rung
only for special occasions,” Sister Vorster said.
So electric magnetic coils operating a gong mechanism replaced
the hammer in each bell, which allowed for some sounding of
the bells for a while. But more electrical problems occurred.
Another study was done in 1996. The electrical problems were
corrected, and the bells were rewired with new rectifiers. They
sounded forth for the Angelus, noon and evening, and for the call
to Eucharist on special occasions.
“Although this was not the most joyous sound, it did serve as a
call to prayer,” Sister Vorster said.
The final toll on the bells came with two severe storms in the
spring. The bells and the structure of the building were severely
damaged by hail and high winds, she said.
“We can’t do anything for them now. We have to concentrate on
fixing the monastery,” she said.
Sister Vorster’s room is located on the sixth floor of the monastery.
Water runs into and pools in her room, as it does many
others in the monastery, on days of heavy rains.
A tarp covers portions of the roof. Bids have been taken on
needed repairs. While insurance will cover some of the cost, the
monastery’s existing funds and donations will have to cover the
rest, Sister Vorster said.
“We have to concentrate on just saving the building,” she said. “I
don’t think (the bells) could ever go back up.
“Hopefully will be able to get one, or maybe two or maybe all
three back up there some day that is in the future. But I really
don’t know how, with the cost to repair the roof and all,” she
added.
So the bells sit on a prepared concrete slab on the north side of
the chapel, where they were placed Monday. Until planning and
finances can make other arrangements, there they will rest, waiting
until they can resound once more.

Mary Ann Arnett Lamb ’60 – I am still living in
Carrallton, GA. We are raising our 6 year old granddaughter,
Zoie. She is one of our greatest joys. I am
saddened to tell you that I lost my mother, Elizabeth
Arnett, on March 15th. I miss her so much. I know
some of you will remember her. I am caring for my
85 year old father now. I could never trade my years
at “Scho” for anything. God bless all.
After another great year as a librarian in an international
August, after a routine mammo detected a lump. This
I first googled St Scholastica a few weeks ago-
- just curious as to what might surface. I attended in
64-65 and 65-66 and did not graduate, but have many
memories. It was great to see a few names from those
years: Helen Lisko, Helen Zeiler, Julie Robben, Kay
Lensing, Mary Lynn Von Hatten, Mona Zang--like
taking a trip back in time...remembering the sentinel
nun sitting under the exit light reading a book in the
rec room when we had dances with the Subi boys...
walks around the “egg”...playing table tennis...square
dancing as part of PE...and archery (I mean, I’m from
Texas!)...shuffleboard tournaments...and the indoor
pool that was so cold you wondered if you would ever
be able to take a breath again...and those awful royal
blue gym suits...doughnuts on Saturdays on our trips
to the mountains with Father...
Hi, I just wish more Scho girls knew about this
site and would write comments about what they are
doing after so many years since the days of St Scho. I
usually make all the reunions and my husband wonders
why since very few of the class of 1963 show
up there. I just tell him that living with the different
classes for four year, I know more “girls” than just the
class of 1963. Spread the word about this site.
Hello to all Scho girls from 1956-57 to 1963. I
have never been able to make it to a reunion but long
to some day. Remember the class of ‘60? We were
60 in ‘60. I just came across some snapshots of our
graduation and it seemed only yesterday that we went
through the ceremony. Would love to hear from any of
you. Mary Florence Schoen Rybak
Really great to see these beautiful web pages
about our school, the monastery, and alumnae association.
I do wish we could obtain e-mail addresses on
all of our former classmates for those who might want
to share exchange of current information. Bernice
Ardemagni McCauley and I discussed this before our
golden girl anniversary in 2006 as we wanted to send
a round robin type of letter with everyone adding to
it. But we didn’t have enough addresses that we didn’t
already know. Thanks for the site,
