New UC Onl<strong>in</strong>e Resource Library<br />

Small farmers, researchers and extension<br />

educators seek<strong>in</strong>g useful <strong>in</strong>formation on a<br />

wide range of agricultural topics now have<br />

direct access to hundreds of articles on the<br />

recently developed UC Small Farm Center<br />

Onl<strong>in</strong>e Resource Library<br />

(www.sfc.ucdavis.edu/library).<br />

This cont<strong>in</strong>uously updated onl<strong>in</strong>e<br />

resource conta<strong>in</strong>s more than 1,000 database<br />

entries. The database, which consists<br />

of article summaries and abstracts on a<br />

multitude of topics—from production and<br />

market<strong>in</strong>g to farm management and equipment—is<br />

comprehensive and small-farm<br />

specific. Users may browse <strong>in</strong>formation by<br />

category or conduct a keyword search.<br />

After read<strong>in</strong>g selected abstracts, users may<br />

request a complete copy of an article or<br />

publication by fill<strong>in</strong>g out an onl<strong>in</strong>e request<br />

form. The Small Farm Center then sends<br />

the material to recipients by fax or mail. At<br />

this time, there is no charge for copy<strong>in</strong>g,<br />

mail<strong>in</strong>g or fax<strong>in</strong>g requests.<br />

<strong>CCOF</strong> Employment Open<strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>CCOF</strong> is seek<strong>in</strong>g qualified applicants for Certification Services Representative<br />

(SR) position with the Handler/Processor Chapter.<br />

This is a part-time position at the Santa Cruz office. The Service Rep.<br />

will report to <strong>CCOF</strong> Certification Services Manager. Monthly salary DOE,<br />

qualifications, hours/week, number of clients, complexity, projects assigned.<br />

Job Duties: Uphold all <strong>CCOF</strong> standards and procedures. Work accord<strong>in</strong>g to<br />

the <strong>CCOF</strong> Certification Services Quality System. Duties def<strong>in</strong>ed by the<br />

<strong>CCOF</strong> Certification Services Chapter Protocol, and Regional Service Representative<br />

Protocol. Additional projects and duties may be assigned as necessary.<br />

Skills: Applicants must have wide range of adm<strong>in</strong>istrative & communications<br />

skills <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g:<br />

• Practical knowledge of food process<strong>in</strong>g and/or handl<strong>in</strong>g practices.<br />

• Excellent communications skills, <strong>in</strong> person, by phone, <strong>in</strong> writ<strong>in</strong>g.<br />

• Competency with computer databases, e-mail, word process<strong>in</strong>g.<br />

• Ability to read/understand federal & private standards/regulations.<br />

• Organizational skills to document/track activities throughout the year.<br />

• Ability to logically solve problems, work under some time pressure.<br />

• Social skills that facilitate work<strong>in</strong>g with groups.<br />

• Ability to conduct<strong>in</strong>g tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>gs and present materials to clients.<br />

• Ability to support market<strong>in</strong>g efforts & expand client base with<strong>in</strong> the region.<br />

Qualifications: Document work experience and/or tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g to evidence the<br />

skills needed for the job. BS Degree <strong>in</strong> Food Science preferred. In addition,<br />

one or more of the follow<strong>in</strong>g is/are highly recommended:<br />

• At least 3 years experience <strong>in</strong> food process<strong>in</strong>g/handl<strong>in</strong>g.<br />

• M<strong>in</strong>imum 1 year experience organic certification <strong>in</strong>spector.<br />

<strong>in</strong> which we live. The new organic<br />

standards will be com<strong>in</strong>g on-l<strong>in</strong>e<br />

<strong>in</strong> October of this year, so the organic standards<br />

most organic farmers have gotten<br />

used to will be chang<strong>in</strong>g. Another regulation<br />

change to put on your radar screen:<br />

the regulation of agricultural dra<strong>in</strong>age is<br />

presently waived by most Regional Water<br />

Quality Control Boards, but the State<br />

Water Resources Control Board will be<br />

tak<strong>in</strong>g a closer look at agricultural discharges.<br />

New regulations may be <strong>in</strong> effect<br />

once the old discharge permits expire as of<br />
