penalty cover used for official registered mail. During this time, Independence was part of Third Fleet<br />
conducting the final air strikes off Japan. The cancel was in red ink, a double circle registry stamp with<br />
the ship's branch number instead of her name; it is rated "C" or scarce in the Postmark Catalog. The<br />
cover also bears a rubber stamp (Locy Type 9efu) cancel from USS Escalante (AO-70) dated July 31,<br />
1945 in the center of the flap. That cancel is rated “B” in the Postmark Catalog. The Fleet Oiler had<br />
fueled ships at the invasion of Western Europe at Normandy and then supported Third Fleet and Fifth<br />
Fleet Operations off Luzon, Iwo Jima, Okinawa, and the Japanese home islands in 1944 and 1945. She<br />
also fueled ships at Tokyo Bay between September 26 and October 20, 1945 during the initial days of the<br />
Occupation of Japan.<br />

Carpet, returning veterans to the continental United States. The cover is not censored. The postmark<br />
was in black ink, with the ship's branch number instead of her name; it is rated "B" in the Postmark<br />
Catalog. The cover is addressed in hand by the last commanding officer of Independence, <strong>Captain</strong> N.<br />
M. Kindell, U.S. <strong>Navy</strong>, who ultimately retired as a flag officer. 15<br />
Independence joined the "Magic-Carpet" fleet 16 on November 15, 1945, transporting<br />
veterans back to the United States until arriving San Francisco once more on January 28, 1946.<br />
