Bethlehem Peace Light<br />

December, of course, brings Christmastime. For <strong>Ukrainian</strong>s, the<br />

Christmas Eve (Sviat Vechir) supper is a most important part of tradition.<br />

<strong>The</strong> dinner that special evening consists of 12 meatless dishes<br />

– 12 to symbolize the Apostles. Hidden in the Mishanyna grid<br />

below are some of the dishes that you might see on your Sviat<br />

Vechir table in a range of variations.<br />

Youth Association who came to a special ceremony in Whippany, N.J., to accept<br />

the Bethlehem Peace Light.<br />

WHIPPANY, N.J. – Members of<br />

Plast <strong>Ukrainian</strong> Scouting Organization<br />

gathered on December 3 at St.<br />

John the Baptist <strong>Ukrainian</strong> Catholic<br />

Church for a brief ceremony revolving<br />

around the Bethlehem Peace<br />

Light that had arrived just a few<br />

days earlier from Vienna, where it<br />

was brought by Austrian scouts who<br />

had transported it from the birthplace<br />

of Jesus.<br />

<strong>The</strong> light was delivered to John<br />

F. Kennedy International Airport<br />

and distributed to scouts of various<br />

nationalities, including <strong>Ukrainian</strong><br />

scouts, or Plastuny, during a ceremony<br />

at Our Lady of the Skies<br />

Chapel. Distribution of the Peace<br />

Light among the Plast members in<br />

the United States is coordinated by<br />

members of the Plast Sorority “Ti,<br />

Scho Hrebli Rvut” (Hrebli).<br />

A lantern bearing the light was<br />

brought to Whippany, N.J., where<br />

representatives of area Plast groups<br />

and local organizations arrived to<br />

join in the distribution of this symbol<br />

of peace, goodness, love and hope.<br />

Young members of Plast (novatstvo<br />

and yunatstvo) formed a<br />

procession that brought the Peace<br />

Light into the church, where it<br />

was greeted with the singing of<br />

the beautiful <strong>Ukrainian</strong>-language<br />

“Bethlehem Peace Light Song.”<br />

<strong>The</strong> participants were addressed<br />

by Lesia Lebed of the Hrebli Plast<br />

sorority, Paul D. Stanton of the<br />

Greater New York Council of the<br />

Boy Scouts of America, the Rt.<br />

Rev. Roman Mirchuk of St. John’s<br />

Church and Christine Kochan, chair<br />

of the National Executive Board of<br />

Plast U.S.A.<br />

<strong>The</strong> Bethlehem Peace Light is<br />

now traveling across the United<br />

States to various Plast groups,<br />

churches and organizations where it<br />

will be welcomed in time for Christmas<br />

celebrations.<br />

New York school boasts 200 students<br />

<strong>The</strong> name of Isabella Kuzyk was<br />

missing in the caption under the<br />

Papuhy group photo that ran with<br />

the story “Members of ‘Riy Papuhy’<br />

enjoy preschoolers’ camp” that was<br />

published in the “Ukelodeon” on<br />

November 13.<br />

NEW YORK – <strong>The</strong> School of <strong>Ukrainian</strong> Studies of the Selfreliance Association of American <strong>Ukrainian</strong>s this year<br />

welcomed about 200 students from the New York Metropolitan area. <strong>The</strong> school, which began its activity on July 5,<br />

1949, this year marks its 62nd academic year. <strong>The</strong> school encompasses preschool classes through Grade 12.<br />

Classes are held from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturdays.
