committee on the current state of the art in the clinical management of pulmonary hypertension in infants and children. Topics will include a discussion of unique
features of childhood pulmonary vascular disease; approaches towards the care of children with persistent pulmonary hypertension of the newborn (PPHN);
bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD), congenital diaphragmatic hernia; and congenital heart disease. Discussions will review the pathophysiology of disease and
provide an outline for clinical strategies for the management of childhood pulmonary hypertension.
Objective(s):
1. to understand mechanisms of lung vascular development and the pathobiology of pulmonary hypertension in newborns, infants and children.
2. to learn of consensus recommendations for the care of children with pulmonary hypertension in association with diverse diseases.
Session Type: Clinical
Target Audience: clinicians, including neonatologists, cardiologists, pulmonologists, intensivists and others.
2013 Pediatric Academic Societies' Annual Meeting
May 4-7; Washington, DC
PROPOSAL NUMBER: 5
PROPOSAL TYPE: State of the Art Plenary
Proposal Submitted by: Satyan Lakshminrusimha, MD
Phone: 7168787673 Fax: 7168787945 Email: slakshmi@buffalo.edu
Session Title/Topic: Pulmonary Hypertension with Bronchopulmonary Dysplasia
Description: Bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD) is a common cause of chronic lung disease during infancy and complicates the course of many extremely
premature babies. With improved survival of extremely low gestational age neonates (ELGANs), more infants with severe BPD require prolonged ventilator care
and develop pulmonary hypertension. Pulmonary hypertension secondary to BPD is associated with high morbidity and mortality. Optimal ventilator and
pulmonary vasodilator management for an infant with severe BPD and pulmonary hypertension is not known. This state of the art plenary intends to address
knowledge gaps in epidemiology, pathophysiology, ventilator management and pulmonary vasodilator therapy in BPD with pulmonary hypertension.
Objective(s):
1. Impact of the burden of severe bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD) associated with pulmonary hypertension (PH) on neonatal intensive care
2. Optimal ventilator management of an infant with severe BPD/PH
3. The use of selective and non-selective pulmonary vasodilators to prevent and treat BPD/PH
Session Type: Clinical
Target Audience: Neonatologists, neonatal fellows and pediatric residents, pulmonologists, cardiologists
Potential/Anticipated Audience Size: > 500
Q&A/Discussion at the end of the Session (and time where applicable): Yes - 15 minutes
