Summer is finally here and we have a sizzling summer 

season ready and waiting - jump in, and join us for a great 

night out at Mid-Ulster’s premier theatre venue. 

One of the most eagerly anticipated shows of the 

season will be Millennium Forum Productions’ 

revival of The Factory Girls. Written by Frank 

McGuinness, it tells the moving story of five 

strong and independent factory girls. To coincide 

with the performance of The Factory Girls the 

Arts and Cultural Development Department 

of Cookstown District Council will be rolling 

out a special community project to mark the 

significant contribution that the Daintifyt and 

Fishers Hat factories each made to the local area. 

No stranger to Fishers Factory where she 

worked before getting into the music business, 

Philomena Begley joins us in May. We’ll be joined 

by another leading lady, Rebecca Storm, in June. 

The ‘magnificent seven’ of Northern Ireland’s 

comedy scene kick off May as part of 2013’s 

Cookstown Sizzling Comedy Club ‘Next Steps’ 

tour. Five of the Irish trad scene’s most iconic 

and accomplished players join us for a very 

special performance in May as the collective 

known as Blazin’ Bows. 

There’s much more to see and do in the 

programme with local performers and a varied 

workshop programme with brand new tutors 

and crafts, you’re spoiled for choice!

Herbie and Murel Glover lead a simple life in their 

terrace house in Belfast. Muriel keeps house, Herbie 

adores his racing pigeons, often hurling curses at the 

next door neighbour who seems to delight in scaring 

them away, and their daughter Susan is besotted 

with Barry. 

Then, when Muriel and her friend Lily discover 

they have won a very large sum of money in the 

sweepstakes, Muriel’s mother from the posh end of 

town, suddenly descends on the house with her hen 

pecked son, Stanley, making life very uncomfortable 

for all and leaving Herbie wondering will normality 

ever return. 

Told with Cree’s usual quick wit and performed with 

panache by Stagehands, this play is a delight for all, 

laced with sharp observations of life and relationships 

in working class Belfast that will have you rolling in 

the aisles.

Blazin’ Bows

Take three iconic fiddle players - Cathal Hayden, Dezi 

Donnelly & Tola Custy; add a fantastic engine room, 

John Joe Kelly and Ed Boyd, and the results are one 

unique gig. 

Hailing from all over Ireland and England, this 

collaborative group is made up of five virtuosic 

musicians who individually have played with a host of 

bands including: Arcady, Four Men and a Dog, Mairtín 

O’Connor Band, Toss the Feathers, Sharon Shannon 

Band, Michael McGoldrick Band, Transatlantic Sessions, 

Calico, Guidewires, the Alan Kelly Band, Flook and the 

Kate Rusby Band to name but a few.

The Sperrin Choir will present a collection of new 

arrangements of traditional melodies from around 

the world. They will begin at home with Slieve Gallion 

Braes and Wild Rover, before moving to Scotland,

A tribute to Van, the Man and 

his Music

Celtic Soul is no ordinary tribute band. This 7-piece 

ensemble pays homage to the music of Van Morrison 

with their sensitive and knowledgeable renditions 

of his classic hits and deeper album tracks. Receiving 

critical acclaim from devout Van fans wherever they 

perform this is their first visit to the Burnavon. 

As one of the greatest musical talents ever to come 

from these shores, Van Morrison has crafted some of 

the most intricate, articulate and memorable pieces 

of music from our time. His own influences have had 

a tangible impact on countless numbers of musicians 

who have followed in his wake.

The Factory Girls

Frank McGuinness came to prominence with his play, 

The Factory Girls, first produced in The Abbey Theatre, 

Dublin. Now it arrives in Mid-Ulster, home to many 

factory girls over the years. 

The Factory Girls tells the story of five women facing 

the threat of redundancy, who stage a lock-in in a shirt 

factory in Co. Donegal when faced with losing their jobs. 

The women characters are five strong and independent 

women: Ellen, Una, Vera, Rosemary and Rebecca who 

take on the boss and the union. These “girls” may 

never get back their jobs, but their brief adventure has 

brought each of them the insight that will give them 

the courage to soldier on. Described as a truly realistic 

play filled with humour, charm, fine acting and staging, 

this is a heart-warming play that will tug at every 

emotion, so get your tickets early.

To coincide with the performance of The Factory Girls 

the Arts and Cultural Development Department of 

Cookstown District Council will be rolling out a special 

community project to mark the significant contribution 

that the Daintifyt and Fishers Hat factories each made 

to the local area. Similar to the ‘Daintifyt Revisited’ 

project in 2009 which was funded by the Arts Council 

of Northern Ireland and Cookstown District Council, 

it is hoped to make contact with ex-employees of both 

factories and that this will lead to a photographic and 

memorabilia exhibition in the Burnavon from 20th to 

31st May.

Gospel Concert

This will be the second Gospel Concert in aid of Project 

Romania (assisting the people of the village of Chet), 

after last year’s inspirational and full house at the 

Burnavon.

Over the past 30 years Rebecca has established herself 

as one of the most popular leading ladies in Musical 

Theatre, playing some of the most the West End’s most 

recognisable roles including Mrs Johnston in Blood 

Brothers, Eva Peron in Evita, Fantine in Les Miserable, 

Edith Piaf in Piaf and most recently Miss Hannigan 

in Annie. 

In 1992 Rebecca starred in Hollywood Ladies, her tribute 

to influences from the silver screen including Barbra

of the CU Factor, a singing competition aimed at 12 to 

19 years old organised by Credit Unions throughout

presenter Conor Phillips, a panel; of expert judges and 

this year’s contestants to see who will become the

to his wife, Linda) has pocketed thousands of pounds 

through fraudulent DSS claims. When Norman 

Bassett (the lodger) opens the door to Mr Jenkins, the 

DSS Inspector, deceptive mayhem follows-as do the 

undertaker, the bereavement counsellor, psychiatrist, 

Norman’s fiancée, a corpse, the ominous Ms Cowper 

and a rather rebellious washing machine. A frantic 

Linda meanwhile consults Dr Chapman regarding 

the discovery of her husband’s wigs, bra, corset and 

stockings (all part of Eric’s swindling activities)! 

I found myself chortling like a whale.

Basket Weaving

The Legacy of Music

This is a wonderful opportunity to see a new genre 

from Martin McGrinder, whose work hangs in some of 

the most prestigious collections world-wide. 

Known for his detailed realistic paintings of traditional 

Irish scenes and cultures, Martin is concentrating 

on the culture of traditional music with an exciting, 

vibrant new style. Viewing the performance of 

traditional music through the eye of the impressionist, 

the paintings show the energy and vibrancy of the 

performers as they play. 

This will be the first time Martin has shown a collection 

of this style, where the work is painted with music, 

vigour and passion. Thick paint added with fast strokes 

of the brush and knife - almost keeping time to the 

bodhran, banjo and fiddle - gives this collection life; so 

much so that you can almost hear the music…

Meet the inhabitants of Tullyhogue and environs 

from a century ago at this fascinating exhibition of 

photographs. Local amateur photographer Robert 

Cowan McKane (1873-1937) captured the people, and the 

events that touched their lives, offering us an intimate 

insight into life during the early decades of the 

last century. 

The photographs he took have been printed from a 

collection of glass plate negatives. This early method of 

taking photographs used panes of glass, coated with a 

chemical solution, to make the negatives. 

But who were these people? Did you know them? 

Can you tell us more about local life at this time? If you 

recognize any faces, let us know! 

During each week, a new set of pictures will be on 

display in the gallery as the stunning portfolio left by 

R C McKane is revealed.

A major photographic exhibition of the building of 

the Titanic captured through the lens of R J Welch 

will go on display at the Burnavon. R J Welch was the 

official photographer for Harland & Wolff and captured 

the building of the legendary ‘Titanic’. The exhibition 

will also feature other stunning Northern Ireland 

landscapes. 



Discover Your Hidden Heritage 

Discover your hidden heritage this summer at Beaghmore Stone Circles, Ardboe 

Cross and Tullaghoge Fort. Cookstown Tourist Centre are organising a series of 

events over the summer months promoting the range of heritage monuments 

throughout the District and highlighting their historical significance. 

Tullaghoge Fort

Come along and hear about 16th Century life in Tyrone 

in the company of the O’Neills. Interact with Hugh 

O’Neill and gain an insight into what it was like to live 

in Ireland over 400 years ago. Enjoy a traditional supper

Beaghmore Stone Circles

Meet with an archaeologist and a Bronze Age re-enactor 

who will talk about these enigmatic stones and the role 

they may have played in our ancestor’s way of life. 

Ardboe Cross and St Coleman’s Abbey

Come and delve into the ancient site of Ardboe Cross 

and take a tour of St Coleman’s Abbey. Hear a reading of 

the ancient High Cross inscriptions, featuring 22 panels 

depicting Biblical scenes. 

Booking is essential for all events through the 

Burnavon Box Office/TIC. Buses will depart from 

the Burnavon for the tour sites at 6pm sharp on the 

evening of the event. 







Burnavon Writers 

Burnavon Writers Group meets fortnightly 

throughout the year Thursdays 7 to 9pm. 

A mix of tutor led workshops, guest speakers, special 

events and open writing sessions, there is much to 

learn and even more to enjoy, and places book out 

very quickly.

Education and Outreach 

The Arts and Culture team offer a diverse 

and full programme of education and 

outreach throughout the season, both in 

the Burnavon and in projects that bring the 

arts further afield in the Mid-Ulster area. 

Through our Arts and Culture Development 

programme we do all we can to build and sustain 

arts activity throughout the community. One of the 

on-going initiatives we support is the Saturday Folk 

Club which meets every week at the Burnavon - the 

club is always keen to welcome new members. We 

also link up with local schools, groups and individual 

artists within the area to give them opportunities they 

might not otherwise have to take part in bespoke arts 

projects. The Burnavon is the perfect platform for

Conditions of Sale 

Once purchased, tickets cannot be exchanged 

or money refunded. Management also reserves 

the right to alter or cancel performances 

without prior notice if circumstances make this 

unavoidable. Where a performance goes ahead 

we accept no responsibility for tickets that are 

unable to be used due to circumstances outside 

of our control, e.g., customer error, inclement 

weather or transport difficulties. 

Concessions 

Where applicable, concession rates are clearly 

identified as part of the ticket price for the show 

and apply to under 16s and over 60s. If you have 

a concession ticket, remember to bring photo 

identification for proof of age at the performance. 

Children at Performances 

Under two’s will only be admitted to productions 

aimed at children and must have a ticket for a 

seat. Buggies and carrycots are not permitted in 

the auditorium. Please check show entries for 

any age recommendations. 

School & Group Bookings 

If you are a school or a group of 10 or more, 

contact the Box Office to find out if a discount is 

available for your booking.

The Burnavon theatre operates an Essential 

Companion Scheme (applicable to house shows 

only). To find out more or register on the scheme,

The theatre is fully accessible, meeting DDA 

legislative standards. The facility is also 

approved by Adapt NI and includes designated 

seating, lift, specially adapted WC and induction 

loop hearing system in auditorium and at Box 

Office. Please make your requirements known at 

time of booking so that staff can best assist.

both the M1 and M2 motorways. The theatre is 

a 2 minute walk from the town centre and is 

sign-posted. FREE parking is available in the car
