Expanding
Multicultural
services
In May 2008, CCA expanded
our capacity to serve local
Spanish-speaking families
whose children are battling
life-threatening illnesses.
CCA has added a bilingual
staff member in the
LifeSupport Family Enrichment
Program. This addition
has allowed us to deepen our
The Gaspar-Huerta family has benefitted
level of service and be proactive
in reaching out to Spanish-
from CCA’s bilingual expansion
speaking families and community networks by translating CCA’s program
materials, coordinating wishes for families, answering questions
about visiting the Caring Cabin, and assisting with Chemo Pal matches.
This multi-cultural expansion is possible thanks to generous support
from the Spirit Mountain Community Fund, Meyer Memorial Trust
and the Henry Lea Hillman, Jr. Foundation.
We are proud to have the opportunity
to become a valued and trusted
resource to our friends in the Latino
community in Oregon and
Southwest Washington.
Three-year-old Luis is served by multiple
CCA programs, including being honored
as a 2008 Community Hero
for seriously ill children and their
families. The series kicked off
of Courage Family Festival, hosted
by 1080 The Fan’s Isaac Ropp,
on Saturday, September 6th at
the World Trade Center in downtown
The celebration continued on
Friday, September 19th with
the 8th Annual Hero Gala,
where nearly 400 friends of
CCA gathered at Tiger Woods
Center on the Nike World
Campus for a night of magic
and inspiration.
Hosted by ESPN’s Sports-
Center anchor Neil Everett,
the Hero Gala gave participants
the opportunity to celebrate courage.
Twelve-year-old Lauren dazzled the crowd
with her vivacious spirit and courage as she
told her personal story. She spoke of her
battle with cancer and how the Music Rx
program brought her family some much-needed holiday joy in the
hospital with Christmas karaoke and bedside music. Bart Eberwein, a
longtime CCA supporter and
friend, shared his son
Douglas’s battle against cancer
and the critical support
and services they’ve received
from CCA’s programs. The
event series provides CCA
with almost 25% of our operating
budget and helps to
ensure CCA’s programs can
continue to reach the local
families that need support.
LifeSupport Family Enrichment
Program fills gaps
This September, CCA provided a much-needed laptop to 17-yearold
Braydon from Vancouver, WA. Braydon’s leukemia has
left him legally blind and he required a computer to
use special software that will read aloud to him and
magnify text. “Braydon is thankful for the outpouring
of support: it reminds him to keep going,”
says his grandmother. The LifeSupport Family
Enrichment program provides compassion and
assistance to families battling a life-threatening
illness and in financial crisis with essential
needs, wish fulfillment, bilingual services
and holiday support. Find out how you can
get involved by contacting Program
Director Bev Tollefson at (503) 200-5109
or btollefson@e-cca.org.
Trips to the Hospital Are a Little More Fun,
Thanks to Chemo Pal ® mentors
CCA has brought the power of friendship to 56 new children and teens undergoing chemotherapy
since January 2008, including Chemo Pal Krystal and 4-year-old Chelsea. Says
Chelsea’s mom, “Chelsea and Krystal are the perfect
match! They are inseparable when together and get
along really well. Chelsea really looks forward to
Krystal’s visits, and Krystal is always really positive
and fun. We love her!” The Chemo Pal program
matches adult mentors with children
and teens battling cancer, providing the
child with a special friend. To sponsor
or volunteer for this program,
please contact Chemo
Pal Director Stephanie
Matson at (503) 200-5119
beauty and the magic of it are endless
and the memories we made here are
unforgettable,” says the Jenkins family
2008 Wall of Courage Unveiled
This September, CCA showcased its 10th Annual Community Heroes program at our
Celebration of Courage Family Festival. This exceptional group of teens and children represent
the thousands who battle life-threatening illnesses with strength and grace. The Heroes
reside in Oregon and Southwest Washington, and were nominated by the medical professionals
who work with them one-to-one. Featuring portraits
of each of these local children and their amazing stories
of bravery, the Wall of Courage exhibit can be seen on
display at various venues in the Portland area.
