Statement
“Great ape populations are declining at an alarming
rate worldwide.
The continuing destruction of habitat, in
combination with the growth in the commercial
bushmeat trade in Africa and increased logging
activities in Indonesia, have led scientists to suggest
that the majority of great ape populations may be
extinct in our lifetime.

Even if isolated populations were to survive, the
long-term viability of great apes is in doubt due to
their limited numbers and the fragmentation of their
habitat. Thus, drastic action is needed.
Time is not on our side.”

The Chimpanzee Habitat
Capital Campaign
Great Apes are a challenging species to manage in
captivity due to their complex range of behaviours,
social hierarchy, strength and intelligence.

Where are they?
“Chimpanzees are found in 21 African countries -
from the west coast of the continent to as far east as
western Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi, and Tanzania.
Chimps live in the greatest concentrations in the
rainforest areas on what used to be the equatorial
forest "belt."
Unfortunately, the rapid deforestation in Africa has
eliminated the belt, leaving only fragmented patches
of forest where it once stretched.”

“Habitat loss is linked to the ever-increasing
demands for land by the exploding human
population.
Africa currently has one of the highest growth rates
in the world, with its population doubling every 24
years…leading to a greater demand upon the
natural resources.
Wood is cut for firewood, charcoal, and building
poles. Forests are clear-cut for living space, crop
growing, grazing for domestic livestock. Forest
concessions are sold to timber companies from the
developed world, some of which practice clear
cutting, turning forestland into desert.
Deforestation drives the chimpanzee species toward
extinction. Many populations have become
fragmented. Very small relic groups will not be
viable once they are cut off from other groups and
no longer able to exchange genetic material.”
Therefore, the world-renowned open range
enclosures, synonymous with Monarto Zoo, makes
Monarto the best location in the country for a new
chimpanzee enclosure.
It is rare that an established zoo in Australia would
be able to provide the space required to manage a
group of chimpanzees, these new facilities will
greatly enhance the regional management of
chimpanzees throughout Australasia.

Chimpanzee Enclosure
This exhibit will be large enough to accommodate a
family of chimpanzees, and will provide them with a
stimulating and enriching environment in which to
live.
A breeding program for these chimps is planned for
the future, in order to increase the genetic diversity
of the region’s chimpanzee group.
Chimpanzee Welfare
As part of their new home we will build night yards,
play areas and landscaped habitats for the
chimpanzees to enjoy and thrive.
Education
More than 100,000 visitors a year to Monarto Zoo
will have a unique opportunity to observe them in an
open environment and learn about these
endangered creatures.
Wild Support
A target of 10% percentage of the funds raised will
also go towards the Africa Programs of the Jane
Goodall Institute.
A key focus of these programs being the education
of African communities supporting the reintroduction
of chimpanzees into the wild.

Be Involved
The chimpanzee habitat will be the largest in
Australasia - 3500 square metres – allowing the
group to roam freely within their landscaped
environment.
We aim to raise $300 per square metre. This will
enable us to reach our target of $1 million dollars.

Our Exhibit
Our exhibit will be the largest in the region, and will
incorporate live trees and platforms for nesting,
shade and views, a shallow stream and provide a
complex habitat to stimulate foraging opportunities
and natural behaviours.
Wonderful views of the exhibit will be provided for
visitors from a number of selected vantage points
including indoor viewing when weather conditions
are extreme.
Fimi and Sanda our two females at Adelaide Zoo
will travel to Monarto Zoo to be joined by three
lovely males from Hamilton Zoo in New Zealand.
Tsotsi, our male will emigrate to New Zealand to live
with the three females currently in Hamilton Zoo’s
large open exhibit.

An animal is Endangered when it is not Critically
Endangered, but is facing a very high risk of
extinction in the wild in the near future.
Sadly, chimpanzees are classified as endangered.
Conservation Strategy
Our focus:
• Acknowledges the need for both in-situ and
ex-situ initiatives, Zoos SA will focus on
conservation projects and programs that are
not only sustainable but that lead to real
and measurable conservation outcomes.

• Involve endangered species that are
maintained by Zoos SA

• is for projects to be selected from national
and global conservation priorities.

Our Chimps
Never before at Monarto have we had such a
challenging project to bring to fruition as we now
face with getting our new chimpanzee habitat in
place and operational.
Not only a complex but also a very expensive
exercise, the chimp habitat will be used both to
relocate our chimpanzees from Adelaide Zoo in
much larger and more suitable surroundings and
also to highlight the desperate plight of humans’
closest relatives in the wild.
The design is based on the ‘open range ’Monarto
concept and will give our chimps a huge, 3000m
plus area to explore while guaranteeing a great
visitor experience.
Exhibiting any of the great apes demands a very
complex set of criteria, not only to ensure their safe
containment, but also to cater for their high level of
intelligence. The high level of enrichment required
will come both from their spacious natural
surroundings and from what other ‘special’
enrichment practices are put in place for them.
The new home for our chimpanzees was the focus
of the recent and successful ‘Human Zoo’ project at
Adelaide Zoo, but this was just the first stage of the
fund raising campaign that has been put in place to
hopefully get this new and exciting development up
and running in 2008.
Your donation is 100% tax deductible with all
donations over $300 being recognised at the
enclosure.
Sponsorship Opportunities
Sponsorship opportunities exist for contributions
over $3000, with naming association also available
when investing $200,000.
If just 667 organisations are able to contribute $300
each, we will be able to reach an initial target of
$200,000. A figure Zoos SA will match, allowing us
to then construct phase one of this ambitious
project.
