2009 was the year in which Docklands Business
Club celebrated its 25th Anniversary.
Over eighty members and guests marked this
significant milestone at a lively reception
sponsored by our long term member
Boulevard Catering and Events. Several
founder members attended including Peter
Turlik who set up DBC in 1984 when he was a
Director of London Docklands Development
Corporation. An eye catching attraction was
an exhibition of pictures depicting people and
events who and which had contributed towards
DBC’s first successful quarter century.
We now look forward to maintaining our good record
and reputation for supporting the local business
community in years to come.
Both 2008 and 2009 have proved tough years for
SMEs,which comprise by far the greater proportion
of DBC membership. To help businesses coping with
recession we have adjusted our events programme.
DBC has co-operated with accountants Grant
Thornton,Tower Hamlets College and University of
East London’s Knowledge Dock to mount speaker
breakfasts and seminars giving practical business
management advice.Topics covered have included
sources of finance, marketing, branding, product
development,expanding distribution and partnership
projects with academic institutions.
Martin Vander Weyer,Business Editor of The Spectator
magazine,gave a well received presentation examining
in depth why the economic catastrophe arose and
how he thought banking’s future would unfold.
My personal impression is that DBC members have
weathered the storm and avoided shipwreck. I feel
confident that membership will remain a bulwark
during 2010 in the form of new business networking
opportunities and management support services.
The latter features free use of the attractive,
comfortable, members’ lounge at 33 Queen Street,
rafts of valuable information on our website, free
entry in the London Chamber’s Directory of
Members,the exclusive website members’ zone,b2b
marketplace introductions and website promotion
of your own offers and events. Not forgetting free

On the events front we have another opportunities

of time as the Docklands eating out scene has

Newish DBC member Setlak PR recently
celebrated its third birthday. The agency is run by
Matylda Setlak who prides herself in mounting
campaigns to reach Great Britain’s Polish
community.
Matylda reports that they have gone from strength
to strength in the past three years having
successfully carried out over forty client projects
promoting products,services and events targeted
at Poles.

INFORMATION
Gateway To London has announced its annual
London Thames Gateway Business Survey,giving
local businesses a chance to share views about
doing business in the region.
Leanne Lawrence,Gateway to London‘s Marketing
Director, says the survey is part of their regular
intelligence and information gathering for local
businesses across all sectors. She stresses that
the survey is acknowledged as yielding a valuable
insight for decision makers seeking guidance for
positive change.

economic outlook.

ONLINE TO THE AIRLINE
London City Airport has noticed a change
in passenger trends. Outbound travellers are
switching to online check-in in preference to the
traditional desks. Occasionally during peak periods
this has had a knock on effect at passenger search.
In response the airport is building additional
security lanes whilst simultaneously expanding
the departure lounge to provide more space and
comfort.
This multi-million pound project is scheduled for
completion by Autumn 2010.
Other developments at London City include the
arrival of Geneva based airline Baboo. They are
flying a twice daily service to Geneva from where
passengers can travel to Venice and Florence faster
than any other carrier out of London. Flights are
on board Baboo’s 74 seat Dash Q 400 aircraft.

Lorraine Turton of DBC member Greenwich
Communication Centre has launched herself into
the debate on whether the 2012 London
Olympics equestrian events should be held in
Greenwich Park.
Lorraine is also Chair of the East Greenwich
Traders’ Association and a convinced advocate of
the park’s suitability for the high profile Olympic
event.
She insists “It’s a unique opportunity for the entire
community to experience the most exciting and
prestigious sporting event in the world – without
even moving. I was living in Sydney in 2000 but
returned to the UK just before the Olympics
rolled into town. Friends told me it was quite a
party so I’ll definitely be staying in Greenwich for
2012.”
As you may have guessed Lorraine herself is a
keen horsewoman. But of course, she is in no
way biased!
GET THE COMPETITIVE SPIRIT
CompeteFor,which describes itself as the online
business ‘dating agency’ continues to grow. Its
supply chain opportunities are targeted for small
and medium sized businesses and over 4,000
contracts for tender have been published on
CompeteFor since its launch in 2008.
Marketing and Business Engagement Manager,
Kevin Ma has notified DBC of the development of
an online resource centre to further improve the
CompeteFor service.
The purpose of the Resource Centre is to provide
guidance to businesses wanting to search for and
apply to opportunities advertised on CompeteFor.
It features an introductory video to London 2012
opportunities,as well as downloadable PDFs and
animated guides on the registration process and
various CompeteFor tools such as applying for

Amal Simothy of recently joined member

TAKING YOUR CARBON FOOTPRINT
SERIOUSLY
The UK Government Carbon Reduction
Commitment (CRC) carbon trading scheme will
commence on 1st April 2010 and will affect
companies who own,occupy or lease commercial
buildings such as offices or hotels.
The CRC legislation was published in draft form
in March 2009. A complete draft guide can be
downloaded from the Department of Energy and
Climate Change. Two things need to be
understood about the CRC carbon trading
scheme from the start. Firstly the proceeds are
completely ring fenced so that all income is
recycled to participants with a bonus or penalty.
Secondly the relative amount of this bonus or
penalty is entirely down to the improvement or
deterioration of each participant’s energy
efficiency rather than absolute consumption.
If your company or group employs around 250
people or more you will probably qualify for the
scheme. Make sure you understand the total
content of the organisation as defined by CRC
including all subsidiaries etc. and where your
company fits in.Find out which building and energy
supplies need to be included in the footprint
reports.
Remember,you must make energy savings in 2010
to avoid penalty payments.

DBC CHAIRMAN WINS TRAVEL
AND TOURISM AWARD
Described as “a leading light on the River Thames,”
DBC Chairman Rita Beckwith, who is also
Managing Director of river boat operator City
Cruises,has scooped an Outstanding Achievement
Award from SHINE PEOPLE & PLACES, who
annually recognise successful women in the travel
and tourism industry.
The judges felt that her entrepreneurship,
organisational skills, business development and
commercial acumen combined with her tenure at
the helms of Docklands Business Club and UK
Inbound, demonstrated exceptional skill and
knowledge in an industry apparently having a male
dominated environment.This accolade is the first
of its kind meaning Rita now sets the standard
for others to follow.
Susan Briggs,Director of The Tourism Network,
who nominated Rita for the award, said,“Over
the last 25 years Rita has worked tirelessly to
build City Cruises into the successful company
that it is today, generating sales of £10 million,
which make a significant contribution to the
capital’s economy. I am delighted that her
outstanding achievements on the River Thames
and in the tourism industry have been recognised
with this award.”

Just before going to press Newslink learned that
City Cruises had scored yet again in the awards
stakes.They have been named Best UK Family
Business,London and Greater London Region,in
the £5 to £25 million category of the Coutts
Prize for Family Business 2009/2010.City Cruises
will now go on to compete at the national finals,
with the winners announced on 8 June. DBC
wishes them success.

DCB/ELCC Member Survey Results
Thanks are due to all those members who completed the recent survey .The results were most helpful in
guiding the Board and Management towards ways of improving our services to members and contacts.
85% of those who responded said membership was of value to their business and 95% felt their subscription
returned value for money.
All respondents confirmed that they had mainly joined to attend networking events.But use of other benefits,
such as website information,legal advice helpline,Queen Street members’ lounge and the online market place
was disappointingly low.Steps are in hand to make members more fully aware of the range of support on offer
and encourage greater use.
Online or email event booking proved popular innovations,favoured by 89% whilst 90% wanted to learn about
the events programme by email.
The events programme content, choice of venues and catering all found favour with Time To Talk Business
heading the list for productive networking.Surprisingly Speed Networking came in last although we know that
many members who attend benefit from new business.
Questioned about time of day preferences 68% plumped for evening, 21% lunchtime and 17% breakfast.
10 participating members reported back that they would like to join a restructured DBC Committee.Results
of its formation will be announced in the mid –year issue if Newslink.

25 YEARS
on and still going strong
Docklands Business Club was launched in May 1984 to promote business to business
contact, create strong networking opportunities, make it easier for incoming
businesses to thrive in the area and to offer informal access to leading figures in
business and government to promote further development.
Docklands has changed out of all recognition since those first days but DBC’S
objectives remain virtually unchanged as has the spirit of togetherness.
Good fellowship was thus much in evidence at Abbey Business Centre, with its
magnificent views of Docklands, Greenwich and the City from the 37th floor of
One Canada Square – perhaps better known as Canary Wharf Tower, when the
25th anniversary was celebrated on Thursday 19 November.
Long term member Boulevard Catering sponsored this Silver Jubilee celebration.
They invented a dedicated cocktail, baked a delicious birthday cake and served
delectable bowl food.
The Reception drew over eighty guests including founder members, ex LDDC
supporters and early sponsors. Amongst them Reg Beer of Frontispiece, Ian
Hammond and Adrian Boxall representing Barclays, John Butcher for British Gas
and Arthur Moreton for BT. Peter Turlik a former LDDC Director and the
inspiration behind DBC was joined by his ex-colleague Gill Marshall now of Gateway
to London.
Present and ex officers of the club on parade were Sir Christopher Benson, Rita
Beckwith, Sunny Crouch OBE,Tina Hanks, Martyn Laycock and Janette Withey.
Rita and Sunny shared the stage to relate the club history and the formal proceedings
were closed by London Chamber Chief Executive Colin Stanbridge who gave a
toast to the DBC its officers, staff and members.
Peter Kent,who deserves the title of DBC Artist In Residence,donated two original
paintings both depicting Canary Wharf in 1984 and 2009. One was presented to
retiring DBC Board Member Chris Tennyson.The other was won in a prize draw
by Sir Christopher Benson, who wore what may well be the sole surviving DBC
tie to mark his erstwhile tenure as Chairman.
A charity raffle for 2 tickets to the next soccer international at Wembley was won
by SP Litho’s Dexter Cole.The money raised was given to Richard House Children’s
Hospice.

Events Review
SPEED NETWORKING RETURNS TO THE
GREENWICH NOVOTEL
The Greenwich Novotel has become DBC Speed Networking’s confirmed destination for our south of the river sessions.We alternate north and south
to make life easier for participants in the evenings.
To ensure that every player can meet all the others numbers are restricted.This keeps the period taken sitting in circles to a reasonable length, avoids
loss of voice and leaves plenty of time for informal networking. It also has the benefit of guaranteeing a lively event.
So it was that thirty eager speedsters gathered on 28 October to be welcomed by Novotel Marketing Manager Erin Morgan with a complimentary drink
and delectable canapés.
Interestingly Speed Networking always appeals to recently joined members and some probable candidates whom we hope will join us soon.This time
around was no exception.
The DBC office can always tell when time and, if appropriate, money were considered well spent.The morning of 29 October produced a small flush
of congratulatory emails and ‘phone calls. Hence, Speed Networking holds its place for the 2010 calendar with at least two appearances.Watch out for
the dates.They fill up very quickly.
The next Speed Networking evening will be on 17 March at the Ramada ExCel.
BACK TO SCHOOL
DBC was invited to assist Tower Hamlets College and
University of East London’s Knowledge Dock in setting up
two seminars to assist SMEs survive the recession and make
their businesses more effective and profitable.Both events
were part funded by ERDF.
The first took place on 11 November at Abbey Business Centres, Canary Wharf.
The title was “A Pathway to Financing Your Business”. Keynote speakers were Richard
Exton of Barclays and Ed Baldwin of Redarch Associates.
Judging by the attendance and interest shown this was a theme which touched the hearts of the
many SME owners and managers present.Asif Siddiqui of Tower Hamlets College introduced both
speakers and explained the role they could play in directing small businesses towards funding.
The second event took place in Dexter House, Royal Mint Court, opposite the Tower of London.
Under the title “How Can Your Local College And University Help Boost Your
Business?” Knowledge Dock’s Martin Chan and Tower Hamlets College’s Andrew
Cruickshank both explained the vital services they could provide for start ups and
established companies.
The evening concluded with Alexandra Kelly,Managing Director of Powerchex and
winner of DBC’s Business of the Year 2009, delivering a case history on all the
assistance and advice received from Knowledge Dock in building up her award
winning enterprise.

A RIGHT ROYAL WELCOME
Erin Morgan,Corporate Sales Manager of our two local Novotel hotels welcomed seventy members
and guests to their Royal Victoria Dock venue on Wednesday 5 August.
The occasion was the monthly Docklands Business Club Time to Talk Business Club lunchtime
networking opportunity which always draws DBC and London Chamber regulars plus a sprinkling
of prospective members.
The Novotel gave us all two welcome drinks and laid on a substantial buffet which made everyone
present feel replete.
Erin was introduced by DBC Membership and Marketing Manager, Clive Randall to tell her
audience all about the Novotel’s many impressive facilities and its distinctive location in The
Royals.
Last year Enterprise – better travel choices, sponsored five Time To Talk Business gatherings.
Their Peter Gazey and Antionette Barnard were on hand to promote their services assisting
employers to devise more effective and congenial ways for their staff to commute or go
about life’s other vital journeys.
The Novotel we met in stands opposite the main entrance to the ExCeL Exhibition Centre
and right on the dockside.We enjoyed a fine,warm summer’s day allowing the bar and lounge
areas to be opened out for guests to stroll onto the terrace.They could enjoy their drinks
and conversations overlooking an expanse of water that was once packed with great vessels
arriving from or departing to every corner of the earth.
Today activity is largely confined to dinghy sailing and rowing based on the local clubs.Though
less awesome than the cargo and passenger commerce of years gone by these leisure scenes
still created a fascinating spectacle for those who lingered on until early evening.
INTERNATIONAL HOTEL HOSPITALITY
Way back in 1993 the International Britannia Hotel on Marsh Wall attached a brass plaque at its
entrance announcing that Docklands Business Club met there every Tuesday evening.Those days
are long gone but the plaque remains as a constant reminder to guests.
But then on 2 September DBC did revisit its old haunt for one of its Time To Talk Business assignations.
We were treated as honoured old friends and lavishly entertained in the Royal Suite. This impressive
room has hosted several DBC Business Awards Dinners over their two and a half decades existence.
Overlooking South Dock members and guests could wonder at the spectacular commercial
developments that have grown up around what was Docklands first major hotel. It proved a nostalgic
reunion for long serving DBC members who made it along to TTTB.More recent joiners naturally
also thoroughly enjoyed the hotel’s generous hospitality and are, no doubt, paying return visits.

THE CITY PRIDE PLAYS HOST TO THE
PRIDE OF DOCKLANDS
Standing at the junction of Marsh Wall and Westferry Road the City Pride is one of the Canary
Wharf Business District’s few remaining traditional pubs.
Its future is uncertain. The pub occupies a large site which puts a gleam in the eye of potential
developers. Thankfully the property market’s current parlous state has delayed the Pride’s planned
destruction.
So DBC grabbed the chance to book in for Time To Talk Business on Wednesday 4 November. We
were greeted by General Manager Christine Bilde who had laid on a mouth watering spread of true
pub grub. This was devoured at a rate of knots by the ravening throng and washed down in similar
style.
A varied crowd of DBC and London Chamber members was supplemented
by guests from further afield and prospective recruits. The decibel count
registered loud for the best part of three hours as networking fever took hold.
A constant flow of business cards was swapped and appointments made to get
together for serious talks in a calmer atmosphere.Altogether a most productive
and pleasurable occasion which was sponsored by our good friends, Enterprise
– better travel choices.
WINTER WARMERS WITH CORNEY AND BARROW
Corney and Barrow has a long and distinguished history as one of London’s finest wine
merchants. Their bar in Canary Wharf was one of the first to open during the evolution of
the business district during the eighties and nineties.Just down the steps from Canada Square’s
fountains,which are computer controlled to respond to prevailing wind force and direction,
the bar has long been a favourite watering hole of the banking community.
But at lunch time on Wednesday 4 December bankers were vastly outnumbered by DBC
members and guests making the most of 2009’s final Time To Talk Business networking,eating
and drinking opportunity.
This seasonally jolly occasion was kindly sponsored by accountants Grant Thornton whose
Paolo Fazzi emailed afterwards,“It was great to meet you all again and I really did enjoy
the event. I have to say that it was nice to be back in Canary Wharf”.
Corney and Barrow’s Juliet Shenderey and Brigid Keith catered to our every need.
A complimentary glass of fizz on arrival followed by quantities of excellent sandwiches helped
networking conversations go with a swing. So much so that guest Nikki Cheysostomou of Tranquility
Pilates Studio signed up for DBC membership on the spot.

OH! WE DO LIKE TO BE BESIDE THE SEASIDE
DBC members and staff opened their 2010 events season with a day trip to relish the sea breezes of the Essex coast. The perfect formula to blow away
any lingering lassitude caused by Christmas and New Year over indulgence.
We joined forces with London Chamber colleagues and in true Old Testament style girded up our loins not to go paddling but rather to re-launch
ourselves into the great networking campaign.
Following a relaxing train journey through the flatlands bordering the Thames Estuary we arrived at Westcliff On Sea to be welcomed at the Pavilion by
its management and members of the Essex Chamber of Commerce.
Our only disappointment was that the pre-event publicity promising stirring views of shipping heading for the North Sea or Tilbury could not live up to
its promise.A blanket of grey fog descended with the making tide and reduced navigational activity to radar only.
However, we were amply compensated by meeting many new faces and enjoying an excellent lunch prepared by the Pavilion’s caterers.
The Pavilion Theatre puts on an impressive repertoire of shows ranging from ballet to pop concerts as well as straight plays and,of course,the traditional
pantomime. Quite a few of those present suspended networking just long enough to pay a visit to the box office.
By mid-afternoon we were heading back to the smoke clutching our sticks of Southend rock.We now hope Essex Chamber members will come to some
of our future events so that we can return the gift compliment with a DBC mug.
DBC GOES SKATING – BUT NOT ON THIN ICE!
Ninety skaters,spectators,networkers and one day old new members descended upon
Canary Wharf Ice Rink for the always popular DBC On Ice evening.
Most were there to flash the silver blades out on the rink. Others came to watch in
awe and wonder as the colourful throng sped by.
This main event in the DBC winter calendar was hosted and sponsored by Brian Jokat
of Skateco. Joint sponsor was Anne Roebuck of Physiotherapy London who was also
running the First Aid Post.Fortunately business was slack in there which allowed Anne
to mingle with the crowd. NHM Insurance also gave support.
Brian generously provided an ample supply of wine,beer and soft drinks to cool down
skaters who, despite the freezing weather, had managed to work up a sweat.
The rink’s Moose Bar conjured up the atmosphere of an alpine
aprés ski chalet. Brian added a keyboard player to keep guests
entertained.
DBC On Ice was the first event of 2010 and it was pleasing to
see,yet again,a strong sprinkling of guests from London,Croydon
and South East London Chambers plus Docklands Networking
Group members. This maintains DBC’s reputation for extending
a warm welcome to colleagues from fellow business support
organisations.

A packed festive diary for the Boulevard event and catering team draws the
perfect end to the noughties. This year has seen the evolution of Boulevard,
producing and catering events from a showcase of Charles Anastase’s latest
creations for London Fashion Week to the Docklands Business Club 25th
Anniversary party.
Achieving recognition for our innovative and delicious canapes at the Square Meal annual canape cup
has been a highlight of 2009, and watching the reactions of our clients when tasting them throughout the year,
even better!

DBC 25th Anniversary on 19 November at the Abbey

Barts and The London Charity will be holding its annual 10K race and fun run in June 2010 at Victoria Park.
The 2009 race attracted over 1100 runners and just over £53,000 was raised through sponsorship & donations
– our best ever year! We were delighted to receive a generous donation from city law firm Wilmerhale which
helped us to hold our biggest and most successful 10K race event. For 2010 we need to secure a sponsorship
total of £20,000 which we would like to share between 2 and 4 prospective companies.Benefits for the sponsor
will include:
• The sponsors’ logos will be attached to all marketing/branding material.
• Participants running numbers will contain the sponsors’ logo.
• Invitation to the charities bi-annual receptions including St James’s Palace in March.
• Exposure to contacts within some of the largest corporate firms in the city.
Money raised from the event will be split between:
• The Cystic Fibrosis Unit - The London Chest Hospital
• Trauma and Emergency Care - The Royal London Hospital
• Prostate Cancer Centre - St Bartholomew’s Hospital
